1. The Formal Elements |

Line – A mark with length and direction, created by a pointed tool or digital stylus. Lines can be straight, curved, thick, thin, continuous or broken, and they can describe edges, suggest movement or convey emotion.

Tone – The lightness or darkness of a colour or area. Tone is used to create the illusion of form, depth and volume, and is often achieved through shading techniques.

Colour – The visual perception of light reflected from a surface, characterised by hue, value (lightness) and intensity (saturation). Colour can be used descriptively, symbolically or expressively.

Pattern – A repeated decorative design, often created by repeating lines, shapes, colours or motifs. Patterns can be regular, irregular, natural or geometric.

Texture – The surface quality of an object, which can be actual (tactile) or implied (visual). Texture adds richness and sensory engagement to an artwork.

Shape – A two-dimensional area with defined or implied boundaries. Shapes can be geometric (e.g. circles, squares) or organic (freeform, natural).

Form – A three-dimensional object that occupies space and has volume. Sculpture and modelled forms are directly tied to this element, while drawn or painted forms give the illusion of depth.

Space – The area around, between or within objects. Positive space refers to the subject, while negative space is the background or empty area; both are crucial to composition.

2. Principles of Composition |

Balance – The distribution of visual weight within a composition. Balance can be symmetrical (identical on both sides), asymmetrical (different elements achieving equilibrium) or radial (arranged around a central point).

Contrast – The juxtaposition of different elements to highlight their differences. Strong contrasts in tone, colour, texture or scale draw attention and create visual energy.

Emphasis – The creation of a focal point or centre of interest, achieved by making one element stand out through contrast, isolation, placement or scale.

Movement – The way a composition leads the viewer’s eye across the picture plane. Lines, shapes and directed gaze can all create a sense of motion or flow.

Rhythm – A visual tempo created by repeating elements with variation. Rhythm can be regular, alternating, progressive or flowing, much like in music.

Unity – The sense of harmony and wholeness in an artwork. Unity is achieved when all components feel connected and work together as a coherent whole.

Variety – The use of different elements to add interest and avoid monotony. Combined with unity, variety creates a dynamic and engaging composition.

Proportion – The size relationships between parts of a composition. Manipulating proportion can dramatically affect realism, emphasis and the emotional impact of an artwork.

3. Colour Theory |

Hue – The pure state of a colour, the name we give it on the spectrum (e.g. red, blue, yellow). Hue is the most straightforward identifier of colour.

Saturation – The intensity or purity of a colour. Highly saturated colours are vivid and bright, while desaturated colours appear dull or washed out.

Value – The relative lightness or darkness of a colour. Adding white increases value (tint), adding black decreases value (shade).

Primary Colours – Red, yellow and blue in traditional colour theory. These hues cannot be made by mixing other colours and form the basis of all other colours.

Secondary Colours – Orange, green and violet, created by mixing two primary colours in equal amounts.

Complementary Colours – Pairs of colours that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (e.g. red and green, blue and orange). Placed side by side, they create maximum contrast and vibrancy.

Analogous Colours – Colours that are adjacent on the colour wheel, such as blue, blue-green and green. They create harmonious and soothing schemes.

Warm and Cool Colours – Warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) suggest heat and advance visually; cool colours (blues, greens, violets) suggest calm and recede visually.

Monochromatic – A colour scheme that uses tints, shades and tones of a single hue. It provides a unified and sophisticated look.

Tint, Shade and Tone – A tint is a colour mixed with white; a shade is a colour mixed with black; a tone is a colour mixed with grey. These variations modify value and saturation.

4. Artistic Techniques and Processes |

Hatching – A drawing technique using closely spaced parallel lines to build up tonal value. The closer the lines, the darker the area appears.

Cross-hatching – Layers of parallel lines drawn at intersecting angles to create richer tonal depth and texture.

Stippling – Creating tone and texture through countless tiny dots. More concentrated dots produce darker values.

Blending – Smoothing out transitions between tones or colours, often with a blending stump, finger or brush, to remove visible strokes.

Scumbling – Applying a thin, opaque layer of paint over a dry underlayer with a dry brush, leaving parts of the layer below visible to create a broken, textured effect.

Sgraffito – Scratching through a layer of wet paint or plaster to reveal a different colour beneath. It is widely used in ceramics and painting.

Frottage – A rubbing technique where paper is placed over a textured surface and rubbed with graphite or crayon to capture the texture.
