📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 13 CAIE Chemistry and How to Correct Them | A Level

In Year 13 CAIE Chemistry, students often face challenging concepts that can lead to persistent misconceptions. These misunderstandings can hinder problem-solving and affect exam performance. This article identifies ten common areas where errors occur and provides clear corrections to deepen your understanding.

1. Misunderstanding the Role of Catalysts |

A widespread misconception is that a catalyst simply lowers the activation energy of a reaction by smoothing the path, while itself remaining completely unchanged and uninvolved.

In reality, a catalyst works by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy. It participates actively, forming intermediates or adsorbing reactants onto its surface. The catalyst is regenerated at the end of the reaction, so its mass and chemical composition are unchanged overall but it is not inert during the process.

When describing its effect, avoid saying the catalyst ‘lowers the activation energy of the original pathway’. Instead, state that it opens a new pathway with a lower overall energy barrier, as shown by the energy profile diagram. This is critical for enzyme kinetics and industrial processes.

2. Pure Solids and Liquids in Equilibrium Expressions |

Many students believe that increasing the mass of a solid reactant in a heterogeneous equilibrium will shift the position of equilibrium to produce more products, according to Le Chatelier’s principle.

However, the concentrations of pure solids and pure liquids are constant and do not appear in the equilibrium expression Kc. Adding more solid does not change its effective concentration, so there is no shift in equilibrium. The equilibrium position only changes if the temperature is altered or if gaseous/aqueous species are added or removed.

Always remember: substances with fixed concentration (pure solids and liquids) are omitted from Kc and Kp expressions. Knowing this avoids common mistakes when calculating equilibrium yields.
