1. Business Objectives and Behaviour |

Firms do not always aim to maximise profit; alternative objectives include revenue maximisation, sales maximisation, satisficing, and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The profit-maximising condition is MC = MR, where marginal cost (MC) equals marginal revenue (MR). In diagrams, this occurs where the MC curve intersects the MR curve from below.

Firms may experience principal-agent problems when owners and managers have different goals, leading to inefficiencies.

The divorce of ownership from control in modern corporations can shift the goal from profit to size or revenue growth.

2. Perfect Competition |

A perfectly competitive market features many buyers and sellers, homogeneous products, perfect information, and no barriers to entry or exit. Firms are price-takers.

In the short run, a perfectly competitive firm can make supernormal profits or losses, but in the long run, only normal profits are earned as entry and exit adjust supply.

The demand curve facing the individual firm is perfectly elastic (horizontal line) at the market price, so average revenue (AR) equals marginal revenue (MR).

Allocative efficiency (P = MC) and productive efficiency (P = min AC) are achieved in long-run equilibrium.

3. Monopoly and Price Discrimination |

A pure monopoly exists when one firm dominates the market with high barriers to entry, allowing it to be a price-maker. Natural monopolies arise due to large economies of scale.

Monopolies can earn supernormal profits in the long run. They may restrict output and raise prices, leading to a deadweight loss of consumer surplus.

Price discrimination occurs when a firm charges different prices for the same product to different consumers, provided it has market power, ability to segment markets, and prevents resale. It transfers consumer surplus to the producer.

Degrees of price discrimination: first-degree (perfect), where each consumer pays their maximum willingness; second-degree, based on quantity; third-degree, based on consumer groups.

4. Monopolistic Competition and Oligopoly |

Monopolistic competition combines many firms with product differentiation and no barriers. In the short run, supernormal profits are possible, but in the long run, these are competed away due to entry.

Oligopoly is a market dominated by a few large firms, characterised by interdependence and strategic behaviour. Game theory, such as the prisoner’s dilemma, illustrates how firms might collude or compete.

The kinked demand curve model explains price rigidity in oligopolistic markets: if a firm raises its price, rivals do not follow, making demand elastic above the kink; if it cuts price, rivals match, making demand inelastic below.

Collusion can be tacit or overt, leading to cartel-like outcomes, though such behaviour is often illegal. Competition policy aims to prevent anti-competitive practices.

A comparison of market structures can be summarised in a table:
