1. Semiotics | 符号学

Sign: The basic unit of meaning, composed of a signifier and a signified. Nothing has meaning until we interpret it as a sign.

Signifier: The physical form of the sign – a word, image, sound, or object that can be sensed.

Signified: The mental concept or idea triggered by the signifier. It is culturally determined.

Denotation: The literal, descriptive, ‘what you see’ meaning of a sign – free of deeper associations.

Connotation: The emotional, cultural, or ideological associations that become attached to a sign.

Myth (Barthes): A third level of meaning where signs take on dominant, naturalised cultural ideas – for example, a rose denoting a flower and connoting love, but at the mythic level representing ‘romance’ as a universal truth.

Icon, Index, Symbol: Peirce’s classification system: an icon resembles the object (photo), an index has a direct causal link (smoke indicates fire), and a symbol relies on arbitrary learned conventions (words).

2. Camera Shots and Angles |

Establishing Shot (Extreme Long Shot): Shows a wide landscape or setting, often used to orient the audience at the start of a scene.

Long Shot: The full subject is visible in its surroundings; useful for showing physical action or setting.

Medium Shot (Mid Shot): Frames the subject from the waist up, often used for dialogue and conveying body language.

Close-Up: Frames the face or a detail, emphasising emotion and significance. An extreme close-up isolates eyes or a small object.

High Angle: The camera looks down on the subject, making it appear vulnerable, weak, or insignificant.

Low Angle: The camera looks up at the subject, conveying power, authority, or threat.

Rule of Thirds: A composition guideline where the frame is divided into a 3×3 grid; placing key elements along the lines or intersections creates tension and balance.

3. Editing Techniques |

Continuity Editing: The dominant Hollywood style that smooths over cuts to create a seamless flow of time and space, making the editing ‘invisible’.

Shot-Reverse-Shot: Two or more shots alternately showing two characters in conversation, usually maintaining eyeline direction.

Eyeline Match: A cut motivated by a character looking off-screen, followed by a shot of what they are looking at.

Match on Action: Cutting from one shot to another while the same movement is still in progress, hiding the cut and creating fluidity.

Cross-Cutting (Parallel Editing): Alternating shots from two or more different scenes happening simultaneously, building tension.

Montage: A sequence of rapidly edited shots, often used to condense time, carry a theme, or create emotional impact – famously developed by Soviet filmmakers like Eisenstein.

Jump Cut: An abrupt, disorienting cut that breaks continuity, often used deliberately for stylistic or disruptive effect.

4. Sound and Music |

Diegetic Sound: Sound whose source is visible on-screen or implied to exist within the story world – dialogue, footsteps, a radio playing.

Non-Diegetic Sound: Sound that exists outside the story world, such as film score, voice-over narration, or added sound effects only the audience hears.

Sound Bridge: Sound from one scene continues briefly into the next, or sound from the upcoming scene begins before the visual transition, smoothing the cut.

Synchronous Sound: Sound that matches the on-screen action (lip movements matching dialogue). Asynchronous sound is deliberately out of sync for effect.

Parallel and Contrapuntal Sound: Parallel sound reinforces the mood of the image; contrapuntal sound deliberately clashes with the image, creating unease or irony.

Props: Objects used by characters within the scene that can carry narrative significance or symbolic meaning.

Costume, Hair and Make-Up: These quickly establish character identity, time period, professionalism, or rebellion, and can flag character development.

Lighting (High-Key): Bright, low-contrast lighting that minimises shadows; common in sitcoms and advertisements to convey a cheerful, open mood.

Lighting (Low-Key): High-contrast lighting with deep shadows and sharp edges; used in film noir and thrillers for mystery, tension, and moral ambiguity.

Colour Palette: The dominant colour choices in set, lighting, and costume that create symbolic meaning – red for danger, blue for coldness, desaturated tones for bleakness.

Performance and Blocking: Actors’ facial expressions, gesture, posture, and movement relative to each other communicate power dynamics and emotion.

6. Narrative Theories |

Todorov’s Narrative Structure: All narratives move from an initial equilibrium (balance), through a disruption (disequilibrium), recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair the damage, to a new equilibrium.

Barthes’ Narrative Codes: The enigma code sets up and delays resolution of a mystery, keeping the audience engaged. The action code suggests a forthcoming action and builds momentum.

7. Representation Theories |

Stuart Hall – Representation: Representation is not a mirror of reality but a construction. Media uses signs and stereotypes that reflect the dominant ideology of society; meaning is always contested.

Stereotypes: A widely held, oversimplified representation of a social group. Stereotypes reduce individuals to a few fixed traits and can reinforce prejudice.

Laura Mulvey – The Male Gaze: Classical Hollywood cinema positions the audience as a male spectator, objectifying women as passive objects of erotic visual pleasure.

bell hooks – Intersectionality: Critiques mainstream feminism for ignoring race, class, and sexuality; argues that gender oppression cannot be understood without examining other axes of identity.

Liesbet van Zoonen – Feminist Theory: Media construct gender through discourse and spectacle; women’s bodies are often coded as spectacle, while men’s bodies are coded as active and being-in-the-world.

8. Audience Theories |

Uses and Gratifications (Blumler & Katz): Audiences actively select media to satisfy four needs: information/cognition, personal identity, integration and social interaction, and entertainment/escapism.

Reception Theory (Stuart Hall): Producers encode a preferred meaning; audiences decode it in three ways – dominant/preferred, negotiated, or oppositional – depending on their cultural background and experiences.

Hypodermic Needle Model: An early, largely discredited model suggesting that media injects messages directly into a passive audience, producing uniform effects. Useful for analysing moral panics.

Hesmondhalgh – Cultural Industries: The cultural industries are risky because audience tastes are unpredictable; companies rely heavily on stars, genres, and formatting to minimise risk and maximise profit.

Livingstone and Lunt – Regulation: Regulating media to protect citizens while supporting industry growth is increasingly difficult in the age of global digital platforms and convergent technologies.
