1. Understanding Sociology |

Sociology is the systematic study of society, social groups, social institutions and the patterns of human interaction. It explores how individual behaviour is shaped by social structures, cultural norms and power relations.

A key concept introduced by C. Wright Mills is the ‘sociological imagination’, which enables us to connect personal troubles to wider public issues. It helps us see, for example, that unemployment is not just an individual failure but a result of economic and political forces.

Sociology also distinguishes between macro-level analysis, which studies large-scale social structures such as the economy and the state, and micro-level analysis, which focuses on face-to-face interactions in everyday life.

2. Key Theoretical Perspectives |

Functionalism, associated with Emile Durkheim and Talcott Parsons, views society as a system of interrelated parts that work together to maintain stability and consensus. Each institution, such as family, education and religion, performs essential functions that contribute to the whole.

Marxism, rooted in Karl Marx’s work, stresses class conflict and economic exploitation. It argues that society is divided between the bourgeoisie who own the means of production, and the proletariat who sell their labour. Social order is maintained through ideological control rather than consensus.

Symbolic interactionism, influenced by Max Weber and George Herbert Mead, concentrates on micro-level interactions and the meanings individuals attach to behaviour and symbols. It explains how social reality is continuously constructed through everyday communication and interpretation.

Feminist perspectives highlight gender inequalities and patriarchal structures. They argue that society is organised to benefit men at the expense of women, and that gender roles are socially constructed rather than biologically determined.

3. Culture, Norms and Values |

Culture refers to the whole way of life of a society, including its knowledge, beliefs, customs, language and material artefacts. It provides a framework through which people make sense of the world.

Norms are the unwritten rules of behaviour that are considered acceptable in a group or society. Values are the more abstract, shared principles that underlie norms, such as honesty, respect and equality. Deviation from norms can lead to sanctions.

Subcultures are groups within a larger culture that have their own distinct norms and values, while still sharing some elements of the dominant culture. Cultural relativism is the principle of understanding a culture on its own terms, rather than judging it by the standards of another.

4. Socialisation and Identity |

Socialisation is the lifelong process of learning the norms, values and behaviours expected in one’s society. Primary socialisation occurs in early childhood within the family, where basic language and values are acquired. Secondary socialisation takes place later through agencies such as schools, peer groups, media and workplaces.

These socialising agents powerfully influence the formation of social identity. A person’s identity is shaped by factors such as class, gender, ethnicity and age. For example, gender socialisation encourages boys and girls to adopt different attitudes and behaviours from an early age.

The nature versus nurture debate asks whether human behaviour is primarily determined by biological inheritance or by social environment. Most sociologists argue that nurture plays a far greater role in shaping behaviour and identity.

5. Research Methods in Sociology |

Sociologists use a variety of methods to investigate society. Quantitative methods, such as questionnaires and official statistics, produce numerical data that can identify patterns and test hypotheses. Qualitative methods, including interviews and participant observation, aim to understand deeper meanings, experiences and motivations.

Research design involves choices about sampling (e.g. random or stratified sampling), access, and whether to adopt a cross-sectional or longitudinal approach. Triangulation, combining multiple methods, can strengthen the validity and reliability of findings.

Ethical considerations are central to sociological research. Participants must give informed consent, their anonymity and confidentiality must be protected, and researchers must avoid causing physical or psychological harm. Covert observation raises particular ethical dilemmas.

6. Social Stratification and Inequality |

Social stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of individuals and groups in a society based on their access to wealth, power and prestige. Systems of stratification include slavery, caste, estate and class. In modern societies, class is the dominant form, often measured by occupation, income and education.

Life chances, a concept developed by Max Weber, describe the opportunities an individual has to improve their quality of life and achieve socially valued goals. These are significantly influenced by class, gender and ethnicity.

Inequality can be measured using indicators such as the Gini coefficient for income distribution. Sociologists also examine poverty (absolute and relative), social mobility and the persistence of inequality across generations. The welfare state attempts to reduce extreme inequalities.

7. Family and Household Structures |

A family is a social group united by blood, marriage or adoption, while a household is simply a group of people living at the same address. The nuclear family (two generations: parents and children) has been historically dominant in Western societies, but diverse forms now exist.

Variations include extended families (three or more generations co-residing), lone-parent families, reconstituted families after divorce and same-sex families. Functionalists argue the nuclear family performs vital functions such as primary socialisation and stabilisation of adult personalities.

Marxist and feminist perspectives criticise the family. Marxists see it as a unit that reproduces capitalist values and provides an unpaid, reserve labour force. Feminists highlight the patriarchal division of domestic labour and the unequal burden of housework and childcare.

8. Education and Social Reproduction |

From a functionalist perspective, education transmits the shared values, knowledge and skills needed for social cohesion and the smooth running of the economy. It also sorts individuals into appropriate future roles based on their abilities (role allocation).

Marxist sociologists, such as Bowles and Gintis, argue that education reproduces class inequality through the ‘hidden curriculum’. Schools teach obedience, punctuality and acceptance of hierarchy, preparing working-class students for subordinate jobs while preparing privileged students for leadership.

Cultural capital, a concept by Pierre Bourdieu, refers to the non-financial advantages that middle-class families pass to their children, such as language styles, tastes and familiarity with high culture. This cultural capital gives those students an edge in the educational system, perpetuating inequality.

9. Crime, Deviance and Social Control |

Deviance refers to behaviour that violates social norms, while crime is behaviour that breaks formal laws. What counts as deviant varies across cultures and changes over time; it is socially constructed rather than inherent in any act.

Official crime statistics must be treated with caution because they only include reported and recorded crime. The ‘dark figure of crime’ refers to unrecorded offences. Self-report studies and victim surveys are alternative ways of measuring crime, though they have their own limitations.

Labelling theory suggests that deviance is created by the societal reaction to an act. Once labelled as deviant, individuals may internalise the label and embark on a deviant career. Subcultural theories explain how some groups develop norms that endorse criminal behaviour as a response to blocked opportunities.

Social control can be formal (laws, police, courts) or informal (family, peer pressure, community disapproval). Both work together to enforce conformity and reduce deviance.

10. Media, Power and Globalisation |

The mass media play a powerful role in shaping public opinion, setting the agenda for political debate and constructing images of social groups. Representations of gender, ethnicity and class in the media can reinforce stereotypes or challenge them.

From a Marxist perspective, media owners are part of the ruling class who use their outlets to spread dominant ideologies and distract the public from the realities of exploitation. Pluralists, by contrast, argue that media content reflects audience demand and that diverse viewpoints are available in a free market.

Globalisation has intensified media interconnectedness. Satellite television, the internet and social media enable the rapid flow of information across borders. This creates opportunities for cultural exchange but also raises concerns about cultural imperialism, where Western values and products dominate global markets.

The digital divide highlights inequalities in access to new media technologies between rich and poor, urban and rural areas, and different regions of the world. These gaps affect opportunities for education, civic participation and social mobility.

11. Globalisation and Social Change |

Globalisation refers to the growing interconnectedness of the world through economic, political and cultural exchanges. It has led to the spread of transnational corporations, the intensification of migration and the circulation of ideas on a global scale.

Sociologists debate whether globalisation leads to cultural homogenisation, where local cultures become dominated by a global Western consumer culture, or to hybridisation, where local cultures adapt and blend global influences to create new forms. The presence of McDonald’s in many countries, for instance, can be seen as both a symbol of Americanisation and an example of local adaptation in menus.

Resistance to globalisation can be observed in social movements that defend local traditions, advocate for fair trade and protest against the power of global financial institutions. These movements themselves benefit from global communication networks.
