剑桥国际 A Level 媒体研究(9607)要求学生批判性地研究媒体产品、产业与受众。Year 13 课程深化分析能力,要求熟练运用理论框架。本文提供实用的教学建议、课堂策略和一份教案示例,帮助教师引导学生应对课程要求,从掌握媒体语言到高质量完成非考试评估。文章借鉴了将理论情境化、搭建分析支架、培养自主学习者等有效实践,使学生为大学学习做好准备。

1. Understanding the Cambridge International A Level Media Studies Syllabus | 理解剑桥国际 A Level 媒体研究大纲

Before planning lessons, teachers must internalise the syllabus structure. Paper 1 (Media Texts, Industries and Audiences) and Paper 2 (Media Contexts) are examined externally, while the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) allows students to create a cross-media production responding to a set brief. The syllabus is built around four key theoretical areas: media language, representation, industry and audience. Familiarity with the assessment objectives — AO1 (knowledge and understanding), AO2 (analysis and evaluation) and AO3 (production skills) — helps in designing targeted learning activities that develop both analysis and creative practice.

在规划课程之前,教师必须深入了解大纲结构。试卷一(媒体文本、产业与受众)和试卷二(媒体语境)为外部考试,而非考试评估(NEA)则要求学生根据给定的命题制作跨媒体作品。整个课程围绕四个关键理论领域构建:媒体语言、再现、产业和受众。熟悉评估目标——AO1(知识与理解)、AO2(分析与评价)和 AO3(制作技能)——有助于设计有针对性的学习活动,同步培养分析与创作能力。

The 2024–2026 syllabus features a range of set media products from music videos to magazines, advertising to online media. Teachers should map these products to the theoretical framework, creating clear links between texts and concepts. For example, pairing the study of the ‘Ghost Town’ music video with theories of representation allows learners to explore how race and place are constructed. Encourage students to maintain a digital or physical media diary where they record consumption habits and connect these to industry and audience theories, reinforcing synoptic thinking from the start of Year 13.

2024–2026 年大纲涵盖一系列指定媒体产品,从音乐视频到杂志、广告到在线媒体。教师需将这些产品与理论框架进行映射,建立文本与概念之间的清晰联系。例如,将《Ghost Town》音乐视频的学习与再现理论结合,让学生探索种族与地点的建构方式。鼓励学生维护数字或纸质媒体日记,记录自身消费习惯,并将其与产业和受众理论相联系,从 Year 13 一开始就强化综合思维能力。

2. Teaching the Theoretical Framework: Media Language | 教授理论框架:媒体语言

Media language is the foundation of textual analysis. Start by revisiting semiotics: signifier, signified, denotation, connotation and myth. Use practical activities like ‘denotation walks’ where students describe the denotative elements of an image before interpreting connotative meanings. Introduce Roland Barthes’ codes — hermeneutic, proairetic, symbolic, semic and cultural — not as abstract theory but as tools for deconstructing film posters, opening sequences or print adverts. This makes theory tangible and builds confidence for Paper 1 Section A unseen analysis.

媒体语言是文本分析的基础。从回顾符号学开始:能指、所指、外延、内涵与迷思。采用“外延漫步”等实践活动,让学生在解读内涵意义之前先描述图像的外延元素。介绍罗兰·巴特的符码——阐释码、行动码、象征码、语义码和文化码——而非将其作为抽象理论,而是当作解构电影海报、片头片段或平面广告的工具。这使理论变得具体,为试卷一 A 部分的陌生文本分析建立信心。

For moving image texts, teach the grammar of film: camera shots and angles, mise-en-scène, editing and sound. Give students a silent clip and ask them to add a sound design, then reflect on how meaning changes. This active learning embeds analytical vocabulary. In discussing postmodern media language, use examples like intertextuality in ‘Stranger Things’ and bricolage in music videos. A useful classroom resource is the Mise-en-scène Grid, a table where students log colour, lighting, costume and setting for a sequence, leading to a holistic analysis of how technical elements create meaning.

对于动态影像文本,教授电影语法:镜头景别与角度、场面调度、剪辑和声音。为学生提供一段无声片段,让他们添加声音设计,然后反思意义如何变化。这种主动学习方式能内化分析词汇。在讨论后现代媒体语言时,使用如《怪奇物语》中的互文性和音乐视频中的拼贴等实例。一个有用的课堂资源是“场面调度表格”,学生记录片段的色彩、灯光、服装和场景,进而综合分析技术元素如何创造意义。

3. Teaching Media Representations | 教授媒体再现

Representation is best taught by linking theory to lived experience. Begin with Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model and his assertion that representation is constitutive, not merely reflective. Use short, shocking examples — perfume adverts that encode gender ideologies, news photos that frame migrants — then facilitate a decoding exercise where students identify dominant, negotiated and oppositional readings. David Gauntlett’s identity theory can be explored through TikTok or Instagram: how do young people construct fluid identities via media? This makes theory relevant and generates rich discussion.

Provide structured frameworks for exploring gender, ethnicity, age and social class. A comparison grid works well: students analyse how a broadsheet newspaper represents the same issue as a tabloid, contrasting language, image choice and narrative. Introduce bell hooks’ concept of the ‘oppositional gaze’ and Paul Gilroy’s postcolonial melancholia when examining adverts or films featuring Black characters. Encourage students to ask: ‘Who is made visible? Who is absent? Whose perspective is normalised?’ Regular practice with diverse texts — from charity campaigns to video game covers — builds the sensitivity needed for high-level analysis in Paper 1 and Paper 2.

4. Teaching Media Audiences | 教授媒体受众

Audience theories have evolved from passive effects models to active, participatory paradigms. Teach this journey chronologically to help students grasp epistemic shifts. Start with the hypodermic needle model and its critiques, then move to uses and gratifications, Hall’s encoding/decoding, and finally fandom and participatory culture. Use a ‘Theory Timeline’ wall display that students update as they encounter new theorists like Henry Jenkins (participatory culture, textual poachers) and Clay Shirky (cognitive surplus). This visual anchor supports recall and synoptic thinking.

Make audiences tangible by turning students into ethnographers. Assign a task: track your media consumption for 48 hours and categorise each interaction by platform, purpose and level of engagement. This generates data that can be mapped onto the uses and gratifications taxonomy (surveillance, personal identity, personal relationships, diversion) or Shirky’s ideas on participation. For a deeper dive into target audiences, use industry data like NRS social grades or YouGov profiles to profile the intended audience of a film or magazine. Students can then create their own audience profile using secondary research, prefiguring the research skills needed for the NEA.

5. Teaching Media Industries | 教授媒体产业

Media industries teaching moves beyond case studies of conglomerates to address power, regulation and technological change. Introduce Curran and Seaton’s ‘Power and Media Industries’ argument that concentrated ownership limits diversity and creativity. Have students map out ownership structures of companies like Disney or News Corp, then contrast with independent producers. A graphic organiser showing horizontal integration, vertical integration and diversification helps visualise corporate strategies. For public service broadcasting, the BBC’s remit and funding model make an excellent case study for Paper 2.

媒体产业教学不能停留在集团案例介绍,而要涉及权力、监管和技术变革。引入库兰和西顿《权力与媒体产业》一书的论点,即集中式所有权限制多样性和创造力。让学生绘制迪士尼或新闻集团等公司的所有权结构图,再与独立制片商进行对比。展示横向整合、纵向整合和多元化的图形组织器,有助于可视化企业策略。就公共服务广播而言,BBC 宗旨和资助模式是试卷二的绝佳案例。

Regulation is a key area often misunderstood by students. Use Livingstone and Lunt’s work on the challenges of regulating digital platforms, comparing Ofcom’s statutory approach with self-regulation models like IPSO. Set up a classroom debate: ‘Should social media platforms be regulated like broadcasters?’ This encourages application of theories to contemporary issues. For a global perspective, compare the impact of Netflix’s algorithm on content diversity with traditional broadcasting quotas. Supply students with a one-page summary of key regulatory bodies (Ofcom, BBFC, PEGI, ASA) and the types of media they govern, along with examples of recent rulings.

6. Applying Theories: A Practical Approach | 理论应用:实践方法

Rather than teaching theories in isolation, integrate them into analysis from day one. Use the ‘Theory Sandwich’ method: start with a textual observation, insert a theoretical concept, then return to the text to explain how the theory illuminates or is complicated by the product. For instance, when analysing a magazine front cover, a student might note the direct gaze of the celebrity, introduce Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theory, then evaluate whether the image subverts or conforms to voyeuristic representation. This embeds theory as a lens, not a crutch.

不要孤立地教授理论,而是从第一天起就将理论融入分析。使用“理论三明治”法:先提出文本观察,插入一个理论概念,然后回到文本,阐释理论如何阐明产品,或产品如何让理论变得复杂。例如,分析杂志封面时,学生可能注意到明星的直视目光,引入劳拉·穆尔维的男性凝视理论,然后评估该图像是颠覆还是顺应了窥视性再现。这使理论成为一种透镜,而非拐杖。

Create ‘Theory Cards’ for revision: each card includes the theorist’s name, a simplified core argument, a key quote (if applicable) and space for students to add an example from a set product. Review these regularly through quick-fire quizzes where students must connect a theory to a text within 30 seconds. For the NEA, students should reference theories in their ‘Statement of Intent’. To scaffold this, provide sentence stems: ‘My use of [technique] was informed by [theorist]’s concept of [idea], because I wanted to…’ This makes theoretical justification a natural part of the creative process.

制作“理论卡片”用于复习:每张卡片包括理论家姓名、简化的核心论点、一句关键引言(若有),并留出空白供学生添加指定产品中的实例。通过快速问答定期复习——学生需在 30 秒内将理论与文本联系起来。对于 NEA,学生应在“创作意图陈述”中引用理论。为此可提供句式支架:“我使用[技巧]是受到[理论家]的[概念]的启发,因为我想……”这使得理论依据成为创作过程的自然组成部分。

7. Cross-Media Studies and Digital Convergence | 跨媒体研究与数字融合

Cambridge A Level Media emphasises cross-media analysis, requiring learners to compare how media products operate across platforms. Design thematic units that pair a print product (e.g., a newspaper front page) with its online counterpart (website, app notification). Students analyse how content is adapted, how audience interaction differs, and how convergence reshapes distribution. Set the question: ‘To what extent has digital convergence made traditional newspapers obsolete?’ This demands evaluation of economic, technological and audience factors, practising the synoptic evaluation essential for high grades.

剑桥 A Level 媒体强调跨媒体分析,要求学习者比较媒体产品在不同平台上的运作方式。设计主题单元,将印刷产品(如报纸头版)与其线上版本(网站、应用通知)配对。学生分析内容如何被改编,受众互动有何不同,以及融合如何重塑发行。设置问题:“数字融合在多大程度上使传统报纸变得过时?”这要求学生评估经济、技术和受众因素,练习高分段必需的综合性评价。

The NEA invites students to produce a cross-media product themselves, typically combining audio/visual and online or print elements. Early in Year 13, run a ‘convergence workshop’ where small groups brainstorm how a brand could expand from a music video to an Instagram campaign and a podcast. Supply case studies like the BBC’s multimodal approach to ‘Doctor Who’ — TV series, webisodes, social media — and ask learners to identify how each platform’s affordances shape content. Encourage them to use convergence terminology: synergy, transmedia storytelling, integration. Linking these studies to the NEA brief gives immediate purpose.

8. Guiding the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) | 指导非考试评估(NEA)

The NEA accounts for 30% of the final grade and requires students to produce a cross-media outcome based on a set brief. Start with thorough deconstruction of the brief. Ask students to annotate every phrase, identifying the target audience, genre conventions, necessary platforms and implied representations. A common pitfall is a generic response that doesn’t hit the brief’s specific requirements. Combat this with a checklist co-constructed with the class, against which they audit their initial ideas.

NEA 占总成绩的 30%,要求学生根据设定命题制作跨媒体作品。从深入解构命题开始。让学生对每句话进行批注,识别目标受众、类型惯例、必要平台和隐含的再现方式。一个常见问题是回应过于泛化,未能命中命题的具体要求。通过与班级共同构建的核查清单来应对这一问题,学生对照清单审核其初始创意。

Research is the backbone of a successful NEA. Teach primary and secondary research methods early: audience surveys, focus groups, textual analysis of similar products, and industry research into production budgets or distribution channels. Require students to submit a research portfolio as part of their planning, demonstrating how their ideas are informed. For production, scaffold technical skills with mini-workshops on photography, editing, layout design and web authoring. Many students struggle with time management; establish milestone checkpoints with formative feedback, using a shared progress tracker displayed in the classroom. The final ‘Statement of Intent’ should explicitly reference theories and research findings to justify creative choices.

9. Exam Preparation and Past Paper Strategies | 备考与真题策略

Effective exam preparation starts months before the final paper. Integrate ‘retrieval practice’ into every lesson: start with a five-question quiz on a previous topic, mixing definition, application and evaluation. Use past paper questions not just for mock exams, but as teaching tools. Model how to deconstruct a question — circle command words, underline key concepts, note the number of marks and weigh indicative content. For Paper 1 Section A, practice timed unseen analyses using a structured writing frame: engage the text, apply theory, explore meaning, evaluate implications. This ‘EAE’ frame helps students write fluently under pressure.

For Paper 2 essay questions, teach planning explicitly. Introduce the PEEL+E model: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link to question, Evaluation of theory/context. Allocate a full lesson to collaborative essay planning on a whiteboard, where the class brainstorms arguments, evidence and counter-arguments for a question like: ‘To what extent has the internet democratised media production?’ Encourage students to use academic register and to integrate contextual factors — social, cultural, political and economic — in every paragraph. Collect exemplar essays from the exam board and, using mark schemes, let students peer-assess and identify what differentiates a Level 4 from a Level 5 response.

10. Differentiating for Diverse Learners | 为多元化学习者进行差异化教学

Year 13 classes often include students with a wide range of prior attainment and language proficiency. Differentiation begins with task design. Provide tiered resources: a core reading for all, an extension text featuring more complex academic language, and a scaffolded version with glossaries and sentence starters. For analytical writing, create writing frames that vary in support — from full structures with embedded vocabulary to minimal prompts for high achievers. Visual aids benefit all learners; maintain a ‘Vocabulary Wall’ where terms like ‘hegemony’, ‘polysemy’ and ‘convergence’ are defined with images from set products.

For EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners, pre-teach key vocabulary before encountering a new set text. Use the Frayer Model: definition, characteristics, examples and non-examples. In discussions, allow think-pair-share routines so students can rehearse their ideas in a lower-stakes setting before speaking to the whole class. For the NEA, provide alternative ways to demonstrate research, such as annotated mood boards or voice-recorded reflections, reducing language barriers without lowering conceptual demand. Regular, low-stakes retrieval games like Kahoot or Quizlet Live keep vocabulary active and build confidence.

11. Recommended Resources and Tools | 推荐资源与工具

Curating a strong bank of resources saves planning time and enriches learning. Essential reading includes the Cambridge Elevate-enhanced textbook for 9607, which provides interactive case studies and self-assessment quizzes. For deeper theoretical grounding, David Gauntlett’s ‘Media, Gender and Identity’ and Curran and Seaton’s ‘Power Without Responsibility’ are indispensable. The Media Magazine archive (available via some school subscriptions) offers student-friendly articles with up-to-date examples. A recommended practice is to compile a shared Google Drive folder with categorised resources: theory summaries, past paper inserts, exemplar NEA work (with anonymised grades) and exam board reports.

Digital tools can enhance both teaching and NEA production. Canva or Adobe Express enables students to create professional-looking magazine pages and adverts without advanced design skills. For moving image editing, DaVinci Resolve (free version) offers powerful colour grading and audio tools. For collaboration and feedback, Padlet boards allow students to post textual analyses and receive peer comments. Kahoot and Socrative provide instant formative assessment. Maintain a curated YouTube playlist of relevant clips — from Dior adverts for representation analysis to BBC Click segments on media industry trends — that can be accessed quickly in lessons.

12. Sample Lesson Plan: Analysing a TV Drama Sequence | 教案示例:分析电视剧片段

This 60-minute lesson aims to develop skills in analysing media language and representation in a moving image extract. The lesson targets AO2 and draws on set products like ‘Deutschland 83’ or a similar TV drama. Learning objectives: 1) Identify camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scène techniques in a 3-minute clip. 2) Apply Barthes’ semiotic codes and Hall’s representation theory to interpret meaning. 3) Evaluate how technical elements construct a specific representation of gender or power.

本节 60 分钟的课程旨在培养分析动态影像片段中媒体语言与再现的技能。课程针对 AO2,并利用指定产品如《德国八三年》或类似电视剧片段。学习目标:1)识别一段 3 分钟片段中的摄影、剪辑、声音和场面调度技巧。2)运用巴特的符号学符码和霍尔的再现理论解读意义。3)评价技术元素如何建构特定的性别或权力再现。

Lesson structure: Starter (10 mins): Silent viewing of the clip without sound. Students note what they see — camera movements, setting, lighting — in a three-column log (Denotation | Connotation | Link to Theory). Share initial ideas in pairs. Main activity (35 mins): Re-watch the clip with sound. Teacher pauses at strategically chosen moments to question: ‘Why has the editor cut here?’, ‘How does the soundtrack position us emotionally?’, ‘Whose point of view does the camera align us with?’ Students annotate a printed storyboard using technical vocabulary. Introduce a theory prompt card for each group (e.g., ‘Consider Mulvey’s male gaze: are any characters objectified?’). Small groups then produce a 150-word mini-analysis on a shared Google Doc, focusing on one technical area and its effect on representation. The teacher live-monitors and selects strong examples to display. Plenary (15 mins): Whole-class discussion linking findings to the set product’s institutional context (e.g., how the drama reflects Cold War tensions via domestic spaces). Exit ticket: ‘One thing I now understand about camera work and representation is…’

This lesson can be adapted for any set TV drama, film or music video. The emphasis on close listening and re-watching mirrors the analytical process students will replicate independently in the exam. Following up with a similar task using an unseen clip in the next lesson reinforces the skill, and the mini-analysis can be expanded into a full practice paragraph for formative marking.

本课可适用于任何指定的电视剧、电影或音乐视频。对仔细聆听与反复观看的强调,模拟了学生在考试中将独立复现的分析过程。在下一节课中使用陌生片段完成类似任务,可巩固该技能,微分析也可拓展为完整的练习段落,用于形成性评分。
