1. The Socialisation Formula |

Socialisation can be expressed as the cumulative effect of agents of socialisation multiplied by the sanctions and role models they provide: Socialisation = Σ(Agents) × (Sanctions + Role Models). Primary socialisation occurs in the family, transmitting basic norms, values and language. Secondary socialisation continues through education, peer groups, the workplace and mass media, reinforcing and expanding the individual’s cultural toolkit.

Internalisation is the process where external norms become part of a person’s own value system. This can be modelled as: Internalisation = Socialisation × Sanctions. Positive and negative sanctions shape behaviour until individuals voluntarily conform. Parsons argued that primary socialisation within the nuclear family ensures the internalisation of society’s central value consensus, particularly through the ‘warm bath’ of emotional support.

2. The Culture Equation |

Culture is the sum of shared meanings within a society: Culture = Norms + Values + Beliefs + Language + Material Culture. Norms are unwritten rules of behaviour; values are collective ideas of what is good/desirable; beliefs are specific ideas people hold to be true; language is a symbol system; material culture includes all physical objects created by a society. Together they form the ‘way of life’ of a social group.

Subcultures arise when a group within a larger culture develops distinctive norms and values, as expressed by the formula: Subculture = Core Culture + Distinctive Elements. For example, youth subcultures blend mainstream cultural traits with unique styles, rituals and argot, often as a response to marginalisation or consumer capitalism, as highlighted by the Birmingham CCCS.

3. Identity Formation Theorem |

Sociological identity is the interaction between self-concept and social attribution: Identity = Self-concept + Social Labels + Cultural Context. George Herbert Mead distinguished between the ‘I’ (the spontaneous, autonomous self) and the ‘Me’ (the internalised attitudes of others). The self emerges through social experience in a process captured by the theorem: Self = I + Me.

Charles Cooley’s ‘looking-glass self’ comprises three operations: we imagine how we appear to others; we imagine their judgement of that appearance; and we develop our self-feeling, such as pride or shame. Symbolically: Self-image = Σ(Perceived Appraisals by Significant Others). Goffman’s dramaturgical model depicts identity as a performance, where the self is a series of presentations managed front-stage and back-stage.

4. Functionalist Theorem of Society |

Functionalism posits society as a system of interrelated institutions working together to produce social order: Society = Σ(Institutions) → Value Consensus → Stability. Durkheim argued that society has a reality sui generis and that collective conscience binds individuals through shared morality. Institutions like family, education and religion perform essential functions: socialisation, regulation and integration.

Talcott Parsons identified four functional prerequisites that all systems must meet to survive, known by the GAIL scheme: GAIL = Goal attainment + Adaptation + Integration + Latency (pattern maintenance). The family, for instance, primarily serves latency by stabilising personalities and socialising children, while the economy handles adaptation. This theorem explains institutional differentiation in modern societies.

5. Marxist Class Formula |

From the Marxist perspective, class is determined by an individual’s relationship to the means of production: Class = Relation to Means of Production. The bourgeoisie own the productive assets and employ labour; the proletariat sell their labour power for wages. This generates a fundamental antagonism expressed as: Bourgeoisie vs. Proletariat → Exploitation + Surplus Value.

The superstructure (law, politics, media) legitimises the economic base, producing false class consciousness that obscures the true nature of inequality. Marx predicted that polarisation, pauperisation and revolutionary class consciousness would eventually lead to the overthrow of capitalism. The key mechanism is: Base (Economy) → Superstructure (Ideology).

6. Feminist Theorem of Gender Inequality |

Feminist sociology identifies patriarchy as the root of gender inequality, with socialisation as its main transmission vector: Gender Inequality = Patriarchy × Socialisation × Institutional Discrimination. Liberal feminism focuses on legal and political reform to remove barriers. Radical feminism sees patriarchy as the primary and universal oppression, rooted in male control of female bodies and domestic labour.

Marxist/socialist feminism adds exploitation within capitalism, suggesting that women’s unpaid domestic work reproduces labour power and subsidises capitalist profit. This dual-system theorem reads: Women’s Oppression = Patriarchy + Capitalism. Intersectional feminism further insists that gender inequality cannot be understood without also considering ethnicity, class and sexuality.

7. Interactionist Theorem of Meaning |

Symbolic interactionism holds that human action is based on meanings that arise through interaction: Meaning = Interpretation × Social Interaction. Herbert Blumer articulated three premises: humans act toward things based on the meanings they ascribe; meanings are derived from social interaction; and meanings are modified through an interpretive process. Reality is thus socially constructed.

Labelling theory is a direct application of this theorem: behaviour is deviant only when labelled as such. The process follows the sequence Primary Deviance → Public Labelling → Master Status → Deviant Career. Becker and Lemert demonstrated how rule enforcers and moral entrepreneurs amplify deviance, making the label stick and altering self-identity.

8. Research Quality Formula |

The trustworthiness of sociological research can be summarised as: Good Research = Reliability + Validity + Representativeness + Ethical Integrity. Reliability means replicability and consistency of findings; validity concerns whether the research measures what it intends to measure; representativeness means the extent to which a sample reflects the target population; ethical integrity involves informed consent, confidentiality and avoidance of harm.

Quantitative research often prioritises reliability and representativeness, while qualitative research tends to privilege validity, often achieving ‘verstehen’ beyond mere measurement. A practical formula for evaluating methodology: Method Choice = Practical Issues + Ethical Concerns + Theoretical Stance.

9. Sampling Equation |

A representative sample is the target of all probability sampling: Representative Sample = Sampling Frame − Sampling Error − Bias. The sampling frame is a list of the target population; sampling error arises from chance; bias is systematic distortion. The following table summarises key sampling techniques with their core logic.

Method (English)
Random: every member equal chance, high representativeness but needs a full sampling frame.
Stratified: population divided into strata, random from each; ensures proportional representation.
Quota: non-probability, researcher selects individuals to fill pre-set categories based on known characteristics.
Snowball: existing participants recruit new subjects; useful for hidden/hard-to-reach groups.

10. Weber’s Stratification Theorem |

Max Weber’s multidimensional view of inequality breaks down social stratification into three analytically separate dimensions: Social Stratification = Class (Market Situation) + Status (Social Honour) + Party (Political Power). Class is based on economic life-chances as determined by marketable skills and property; status refers to social prestige often derived from lifestyle; party relates to collective organisation to influence distribution of power.

Unlike Marx, Weber argued that status groups can form independent of class and that power does not always flow from economic position. For example, impoverished clergy may enjoy high status, while wealthy criminals may lack social honour. This theorem explains why inequality is experienced through multiple overlapping hierarchies.

11. Social Mobility Formula |

Social mobility refers to the movement of individuals or groups between social strata. It can be captured by a simple identity: Mobility = Structural Change + Individual Attributes + Opportunity Structures. Intergenerational mobility compares parents’ and children’s positions; intragenerational mobility tracks changes within a single lifetime. Vertical mobility moves up or down the hierarchy; horizontal mobility involves a change of role at a similar status level.

Sociologists examine the extent to which societies are open or closed. Meritocratic ideals suggest that mobility should be governed by ability and effort, summarised as: Achieved Status = F (Ability, Effort, Education). However, studies by Goldthorpe and the Oxford Mobility Study reveal that class background remains a powerful predictor of destinations, indicating the persistence of ascription over achievement.

12. Ethical Principles Quick Code |

All sociological inquiry must adhere to a core ethical theorem: Ethics = Informed Consent + Confidentiality + No Harm + Right to Withdraw. Informed consent means participants fully understand the research aims and methods before agreeing. Confidentiality guarantees that personal data will be anonymised. No harm obliges researchers to prevent physical, psychological and social repercussions. The right to withdraw allows participants to exit at any stage without penalty.

Covert observation challenges these principles because deception and lack of consent are often integral to the method. The British Sociological Association’s ethical guidelines require that covert research be conducted only when it is indispensable and where no alternative method exists. The ‘greater good’ debate can be expressed as a balancing act: Ethical Risk = Sociological Benefits − Potential Harm to Subjects.
