📚 GCSE CCEA History Case Study Practical Drill | GCSE CCEA

Welcome to this GCSE CCEA History case study practical drill. In this guide, we will walk through a realistic exam-style source analysis exercise based on one of the most controversial events in Northern Ireland’s recent past: Bloody Sunday 1972. By the end, you will understand exactly how to tackle a case study question with confidence, high-level analysis, and strong contextual reference.

1. Understanding the CCEA Case Study Question | 理解 CCEA 案例分析题

In CCEA GCSE History, the case study question forms part of the Local Study unit and often asks you to evaluate sources concerning a key event from Irish or Northern Irish history. Typical question stems include ‘How useful are Sources A and B for an historian studying…?’ or ‘How reliable is Source A as evidence about…?’ You must go beyond simple description and demonstrate a critical awareness of provenance, motive, tone, and contextual knowledge.

Examiners look for your ability to weigh sources against each other and against what you already know. You should also identify limitations, such as the purpose of the author, the audience, and the timing of creation. A high-level answer will cross-reference the sources and reach a balanced, well-supported conclusion.

2. The Historical Context: Bloody Sunday 1972 |

On 30 January 1972, a civil rights march organised by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) took place in Derry/Londonderry. The march had been banned by the Stormont government, but organisers proceeded peacefully, demanding an end to internment without trial and discrimination against the Catholic nationalist community. Tensions were already high due to the deployment of the British Army and the escalating violence of the Troubles.

During the afternoon, soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment opened fire on civilians in the Bogside area, killing fourteen people and wounding many others. The army claimed its soldiers had been fired upon first and that they were engaging gunmen and bombers. However, a subsequent inquiry by Lord Widgery in 1972 was widely criticised for exonerating the soldiers too readily. Decades later, the Saville Inquiry (2010) concluded that none of the victims posed a threat and that the shootings were unjustified. This deeply disputed event remains a powerful case study for historical analysis.

3. Source A: An Eyewitness Account by a British Paratrooper |

Source A is an extract from the private diary of Captain John Freeman of the Parachute Regiment, written on 2 February 1972. He describes what he saw and did during the confrontation:

“As we moved into the Bogside to arrest rioters, I distinctly heard three high-velocity shots from the Rossville Flats. My section came under sustained fire. I saw a figure on a balcony with what appeared to be a rifle. Given the immediate threat to my men, I ordered return fire. Later, we found nail bombs and a pistol near the bodies. Our actions were entirely justified to prevent a greater loss of military life. Unfortunately, civilians got caught in the crossfire.”

4. Source B: A Press Photograph of the Civil Rights March |

Source B is a photograph taken by Derry Journal staff photographer Patrick O’Kane on 30 January 1972. The black-and-white image shows Father Edward Daly waving a bloodstained white handkerchief as he leads a group of men carrying the body of a young man. In the background, marchers are scattering in panic with their hands raised. No weapons are visible anywhere in the frame.

The photograph was published on the front page the next day with the headline ‘Massacre in Derry’. It rapidly circulated worldwide and helped shape international opinion against the British Army’s conduct. The photographer’s brother was a civil rights activist, though O’Kane himself maintained professional neutrality.

5. Analysing Provenance: Who, When, Why |

Evaluating provenance is the first step towards a strong answer. For each source, ask yourself: who created it, when, and for what purpose? The table below summarises the key points you should note.

Aspect Source A (Diary) Source B (Photograph)
Author British Army captain involved in the operation Local press photographer
Date 3 days after the event (2 Feb 1972) Same day (30 Jan 1972)
Purpose Private reflection; possibly to build a defence case if investigated News reporting; to inform the public and sell papers

For Source A, a diary entry written days later may have been influenced by the author’s desire to justify his actions. Note the language of self-justification: ‘entirely justified’, ‘unfortunately, civilians got caught’. The timing suggests reflection rather than immediate response. For Source B, the photograph was taken in the heat of the moment and published rapidly, yet the Derry Journal had a nationalist leaning, and the carefully composed image focusing on victimhood could be seen as propaganda.

6. Evaluating Reliability and Tone |

Reliability depends on how accurately a source reflects reality. Source A’s reliability is limited by the captain’s vested interest in portraying the army as responding to a real threat. His claim of hearing ‘three high-velocity shots’ and seeing ‘a rifle’ cannot be verified independently and mirrors the army’s official narrative. The diary entry includes specific details about recovering nail bombs and a pistol, but the Saville Report of 2010 found no credible evidence that any victim had been armed or handled weapons. Therefore, the source’s reliability is highly questionable unless corroborated.

Source B, being a photograph, seems to capture an undeniable moment: a priest helping unarmed men carry a body. Its tone is humanitarian and shocking, evoking sympathy. However, photographs can be selective; they only show one angle of a complex scene. The absence of weapons in the frame does not prove that none existed anywhere. Nonetheless, the photograph is reasonably reliable as evidence of the immediate aftermath of the shootings, especially when combined with thousands of other eyewitness statements collected by the Saville Inquiry.

7. Cross-Referencing and Detecting Bias |

A historian’s core skill is to pit one source against another and against what is known from the wider context. Cross-referencing Sources A and B immediately reveals a contradiction: Source A insists soldiers faced armed attackers, while Source B depicts a chaotic, unarmed flight and a humanitarian crisis. This tension calls for an explanation.

Ask yourself: could both be partially true? It is possible that somewhere in the Bogside there were IRA gunmen, but Source A’s claim that the entire unit was under sustained fire seems exaggerated when balanced against the photographic evidence of unarmed civilians and later inquiries. The bias in Source A is clear: it serves to protect the author and his comrades. Source B’s bias is more subtle; the photographer may have deliberately framed the scene to highlight victimhood, but this does not make it false. The Saville Report concluded that soldiers had lost self-control and fired on unarmed civilians without justification, which strongly challenges Source A’s credibility.

8. Using Contextual Knowledge to Support Analysis |

Your own contextual knowledge is the key to unlocking the value of sources. For Bloody Sunday, essential knowledge includes the following points. The Stormont government’s ban on the march and the widespread community anger over internment created a tense atmosphere. Many nationalists viewed the British Army, initially welcomed as protectors in 1969, as an occupying force by 1972. Both the Widgery Report (1972) and the later Saville Inquiry are vital reference points. Saville’s conclusion that the army fired first and that none of those killed were posing a threat directly undermines Source A’s account of a legitimate military response. Furthermore, the global impact of Source B’s photograph influenced the British government’s decision to suspend the Stormont parliament and impose direct rule in March 1972, highlighting the image’s power as political evidence.

9. Planning a Balanced Answer |

A structured plan will prevent you from falling into the trap of describing sources. Start by stating your judgement upfront – for example, if asked about reliability, you might state that Source B is considerably more reliable than Source A. Then, dedicate a paragraph to each source, analysing provenance, tone, and content. A third paragraph should cross-reference them and bring in contextual knowledge. Finally, write a conclusion that acknowledges complexity: while Source A is flawed, it still offers insight into the mentality of the soldiers; Source B, though emotionally powerful, is one captured moment. Neither fully captures the truth, but together with background evidence, the historian can build a measured interpretation.

Use a checklist: 1) Introduce the question and your line of argument; 2) Evaluate Source A’s provenance, reliability, and limitations; 3) Do the same for Source B; 4) Cross-reference and compare using contextual knowledge; 5) Reach a substantiated conclusion that addresses the question directly.

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

One frequent error is to describe the sources in detail without analysing them. For instance, just saying ‘Source A says there were gunmen’ does not score high marks; you must explain why this claim may be unreliable due to the author’s motive and the proven historical record. Another mistake is to treat all sources as equally useful. A photograph is not automatically better than a diary; each has different strengths. A third pitfall is neglecting provenance – ignoring who wrote the document and for what purpose will severely limit your grade. Finally, avoid sweeping generalisations like ‘Source A is completely useless’ or ‘Source B is totally reliable’. Exam boards reward nuance.

11. Model Answer Paragraph |

Below is a sample paragraph evaluating the reliability of Source A. Notice how it integrates provenance, tone, and contextual knowledge. The reliability of Source A is highly questionable. It is a diary entry written three days after Bloody Sunday by a paratrooper captain who was directly involved in the shootings. The immediate context was intense public criticism of the army, and the author has a clear motive to justify his actions and those of his unit. He claims to have heard ‘high-velocity shots’ and seen a ‘rifle’, but the Saville Inquiry’s exhaustive investigation found no evidence that any of those killed had fired weapons or possessed nail bombs at that moment. Furthermore, his assertion that soldiers acted to prevent a ‘greater loss of military life’ is undermined by the fact that no soldiers were killed and only a small number suffered minor injuries. The diary therefore cannot be taken at face value as objective evidence; it is a self-serving account coloured by the need to create a legal and moral defence.

12. Practice Drill for You | 你的练习环节

Now it is your turn. Imagine you are given two further sources about the 1972 Bloody Sunday: Source C is a statement to the Saville Inquiry by a teenage witness who saw soldiers laughing after the shooting; Source D is an official army report from the same day claiming that all rounds were aimed at identified gunmen. Using the skills practised in this drill, write a short essay answering the question: ‘How useful are Sources C and D for an historian studying the conduct of British soldiers on Bloody Sunday?’ Be sure to evaluate provenance, reliability, tone, and context, and aim for a balanced, evidence-based judgement.
