1. Research Methods: Experiments and Variables | 研究方法:实验与变量

Experiments are the primary research method in psychology, allowing researchers to establish cause-and-effect relationships. An experiment involves the manipulation of an independent variable (IV) to observe changes in a dependent variable (DV), while controlling extraneous variables.

The independent variable is the factor that is deliberately changed by the researcher. The dependent variable is what is measured. Operationalising variables means defining them clearly so they can be measured accurately, e.g., defining ‘memory’ as the number of words recalled from a list.

2. Experimental Design and Controls | 实验设计与控制

Three main experimental designs are used: independent groups, repeated measures, and matched pairs. In independent groups, different participants are used in each condition. In repeated measures, the same participants take part in all conditions. Matched pairs design pairs participants on key characteristics and then allocates one from each pair to different conditions.

3. Ethical Considerations | 伦理考量

Deception should be avoided unless necessary and fully justified; then participants must be debriefed afterwards.

Atkinson and Shiffrin’s (1968) Multi-Store Model (MSM) describes memory as three separate stores: sensory register, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM). Information flows sequentially. Sensory register holds information from the senses for a very brief duration (iconic memory for vision). If attention is paid, it transfers to STM.

Context-dependent forgetting (lack of retrieval cues) also plays a role.
