1. Semiotics and Signs |

Semiotics, the study of signs, is fundamental to media analysis. Every media text is constructed from signs that carry meaning. Roland Barthes proposed two orders of signification: denotation (literal meaning) and connotation (associated meanings).

Key terms: Signifier – the physical form of the sign (e.g., a word, image, sound). Signified – the mental concept the signifier evokes. Together they form a sign. For instance, the signifier ‘crown’ signifies royalty and power.

Memory hook: Think of “D-C S-S” – Denotation = Dictionary, Connotation = Cultural; Signifier = Sense (what you see), Signified = Significance (what it means).

2. Narrative Structures |

Narrative theory helps us understand how stories are organised. Todorov’s equilibrium model: equilibrium → disruption → recognition → repair → new equilibrium. Propp identified 8 character types (e.g., hero, villain, donor) in folktales; these can be applied to modern media.

Also crucial: linear vs non-linear narratives (e.g., flashbacks), enigma codes (Barthes) that create mystery, and action codes that drive the plot forward.

Memory tip: Remember “TEP” – Todorov, Enigma, Propp – for narrative essentials.

3. Genre and Conventions |

Genre is a category of media texts sharing similar codes and conventions. These include iconography (visual symbols), settings, narrative patterns, and character types. Steve Neale argued that genres rely on repetition and difference: audiences expect familiar conventions but also seek variation.

Hybrid genres mix conventions (e.g., romantic comedy). Sub-genres are subsets within a genre (e.g., slasher horror). Remember that genre is a construct used by producers to target audiences and by audiences to make choices.
