The AS CAIE Economics exam requires not only a solid grasp of economic theory but also a clear understanding of how to apply knowledge and structure answers to meet the examiners’ expectations. This guide breaks down the key techniques and marking criteria to help you maximise your score.

1. Overview of AS CAIE Economics Exam | AS CAIE

The AS Economics syllabus (9708) consists of two externally assessed papers. Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper with 30 questions, lasting 1 hour and worth 30 marks. It covers the whole AS syllabus including basic micro and macro topics.

Paper 2 is divided into two sections: Section A has one compulsory data response question worth 20 marks; Section B offers three essay questions from which you must choose one, also worth 20 marks. The total time for Paper 2 is 1 hour 30 minutes.

2. Understanding the Marking Grid |

All examiners mark your work using a set of assessment objectives (AOs). For Paper 2, each question is assessed against four objectives: Knowledge and Understanding (KU), Application (APP), Analysis (AN), and Evaluation (EV). These build in complexity and determine the level of your response.

The table below shows the typical mark allocation for each AO in both the data response and essay questions. Use these as a guide to allocate your effort and structure your answers.

AO Description Data Response Marks Essay Marks
KU
Define terms, state facts and theories
3 4
APP
应用
Apply concepts to context, use data/examples
3 4
AN
分析
Develop logical chains of reasoning, diagrams
6 6
EV
评价
Weigh up arguments, consider priorities, limitations
8 6

Marks for each AO are awarded holistically – your answer is judged overall, not as a tick-list of points. However, you must demonstrate all four objectives to reach the highest levels.

3. Knowledge and Understanding (KU) | 知识与理解 (KU)

KU marks reward accurate recall of economic definitions, formulae, and basic concepts. Always begin a part-question with a clear definition of key terms. For example, if a data response asks about inflation, start by defining inflation as ‘a sustained increase in the general price level’.

Beyond definitions, show you know relevant diagrams and theories. Labelling axes correctly and stating initial equilibrium points demonstrates foundation knowledge. Even a single correct term can earn a mark, but to access higher levels you need precise, exam-ready language.

Diagrams should be drawn with a ruler and fully labelled. Mentioning key assumptions, such as ceteris paribus, also strengthens your KU base.

4. Application (APP) | 应用 (APP)

Application asks you to connect economic theory to the specific context in the question. Never give a generic textbook answer – instead, quote figures from data, refer to the country or market described, or mention an industry example given in the case study.

In data response, inserting a relevant statistic from the extract (e.g. ‘the CPI rose by 2.8%’) directly earns APP marks. In essays, you can create your own real-world examples or use those from the syllabus, such as the effect of a sugar tax on consumption, to link theory to reality.

Effective application means every analytical point should be anchored to the material given. Avoid floating arguments; always tether them to evidence from the question or your own examples.

5. Analysis (AN) | 分析 (AN)

Analysis is where you unpack the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of economic outcomes. An excellent analysis develops a clear chain of reasoning: A leads to B, which causes C. Use connectives like ‘therefore’, ‘as a result’, and ‘consequently’ to make logical steps explicit.

Supply and demand diagrams are your most powerful analytical tools. Draw the initial equilibrium, show the shift, label the new price and quantity, and explain the adjustment process. For example, an increase in income shifts demand right, raising price and quantity – then link this to the context.

Analysis also encompasses cause-and-effect relationships in macroeconomics, such as the multiplier effect or the transmission of monetary policy. Always go beyond mere description; unpack the mechanism step by step. For high AN marks, include a diagram and a well-developed written chain.

6. Evaluation (EV) | 评价 (EV)

Evaluation assesses your ability to stand back and make informed judgements about economic arguments. It is the top-tier skill that distinguishes Grade A scripts. You should question assumptions, consider short-run vs long-run effects, and weigh the relative importance of factors.

A common evaluation framework is ITAR: Importance (which factor matters most?), Time (short-run vs long-run), Assumptions (are the ceteris paribus assumptions realistic?), and Relativity (effects on different stakeholders). Answering using such criteria shows structured evaluative thinking.

In essays, always include an evaluative paragraph as part of your conclusion, or interweave evaluation throughout. Phrases like ‘However, this depends on…’, ‘In the long run, the outcome might differ…’ or ‘The extent of this effect is limited by…’ signal evaluation. For data response, evaluation often requires you to assess the reliability of data and the appropriateness of a suggested policy.

7. Data Response Questions: Step-by-Step |

Step 1: Skim the extracts and read the questions before diving deep. Identify command words like ‘define’, ‘explain’, ‘analyse’, ‘discuss’. ‘Discuss’ always demands evaluation. Underline context clues.

Step 2: For part (a) definitions, provide a precise economic definition in the first sentence, even if the question does not explicitly say ‘define’. Use data to earn APP marks – a short quote or statistic inserted in your explanation.

Step 3: For ‘explain’ or ‘analyse’ sub-questions, draw a relevant diagram and fully label it. Write a chain of reasoning directly linked to the extract. Mention how a specific event in the text leads to an economic change.

Step 4: The final part often requires a ‘discuss’ or ‘evaluate’ response. Here you must present balanced arguments. Start with your analytical points, then challenge them with evaluative insights. Use data to support both sides, and conclude with a justified recommendation.

8. Essay Questions: Structure and Approach |

A high-scoring essay needs a brief introduction that defines the key term and outlines the essay’s direction. Do not waste time rewriting the question – just state your understanding and your plan.

The body should contain two or three developed arguments. Each argument must combine KU, APP, AN, and, where possible, EV. Start with a clear topic sentence, provide the theory, use an example, draw a diagram (if relevant), then evaluate the point’s strength or limitation.

At the end, write a concise conclusion that synthesises your analysis and arrives at a judgement. Refer back to the evaluation criteria you used. Avoid introducing new material in the conclusion. The best essays tie together earlier evaluative threads into a final, measured stance.

9. Multiple Choice Questions: Tips |

Paper 1 can be deceptive: each question tests precise understanding. Read all four options carefully before selecting. Often, two answers are obviously wrong, but one distractor is plausible – your job is to eliminate step by step.

Pace yourself at around 2 minutes per question. If stuck, mark the question and return later – never leave a blank as there is no penalty for guessing. Use diagrams mentally for questions on market equilibrium, elasticity, or externalities.

Common trick areas include the distinction between a movement along and a shift of the curve, and between absolute and comparative advantage. Revise these thoroughly. When unsure, choose the answer that matches fundamental economic principles rather than an extreme statement.

10. Time Management in Exams |

Effective time allocation is as important as knowledge. For Paper 1, you have exactly 2 minutes per question on average. Stick to this cadence; if a question takes longer, guess, flag, and move on. Use the last 5 minutes to review flagged items.

For Paper 2, spend about 40 minutes on the data response and 50 minutes on the essay. Within the data response, allocate time roughly in line with mark weighting: the final 12-mark discussion question deserves around 20 minutes. For the essay, plan for 5 minutes, then write for 40 minutes, leaving 5 minutes for proofreading.

Never over-write the early low-mark parts at the expense of later high-mark questions. Even if you feel your knowledge is strong, a well-structured answer with tight time control will outscore a rambling perfect-knowledge answer that is incomplete.

11. Common Pitfalls to Avoid |

Pitfall 1: Memesising essays instead of applying to the question. Answers that regurgitate pre-learned paragraphs without tailoring to the specific context will be capped at low levels. Always adapt your knowledge to the given scenario.

Pitfall 2: Diagrams without written explanation. A diagram alone will not earn full AN marks. You must explain the initial position, the change, and the new equilibrium in words. Likewise, an explanation without a diagram misses an opportunity to boost analysis.

Pitfall 3: Ignoring the question’s command word. ‘Explain’ requires an analysis chain; ‘Discuss’ demands evaluation. If you only explain when asked to discuss, you will lose nearly all EV marks. Circle command words during reading time.

Pitfall 4: Weak or omitted definitions. Even in higher-mark questions, failing to define the central term causes an immediate loss of KU marks. Make defining your second nature.

12. Final Revision Checklist |

In the last weeks, compile a glossary of 50 key definitions from micro and macro topics. Practise writing each from memory under timed conditions. Definitions are the easiest marks to secure and form the foundation for all other AOs.

Practise at least three complete data response sets and two timed essays. For each, self-assess against the marking grid. Identify where you are dropping marks – is it a lack of APP because you forgot data quotes, or insufficient EV? Target your weaknesses.
