This guide introduces key historical terms and offers memory aids to help you recall them quickly under exam conditions.

1. Causation |

Causation is a core historical concept. It involves identifying and categorising the reasons why events happen. Simply listing factors is not enough; you must explain how different causes connect.

Long-term cause: an underlying factor that develops over decades, such as economic depression or religious discontent. These create the conditions for change.

Short-term cause: a more immediate factor that accelerates change, for example a diplomatic crisis or a bad harvest.

Trigger (spark): the specific event that ignites a larger conflict, e.g. the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. A trigger is often a short-term cause, but not all short-term causes are triggers.

Necessary cause: a condition without which the event could not have occurred. For a revolution, widespread discontent is often a necessary cause.

Sufficient cause: a cause or set of causes that guarantee the outcome. Historians rarely find a single sufficient cause; usually it is a combination.

Memory aid: Use the chain idea – long-term causes are rust growing on a chain, short-term adds tension, the trigger snaps the chain. Remember ‘LONG-SHORT TRIG-NEC-SUFF’.

2. Consequence |

Consequence refers to the results of historical events. These can be planned or accidental, immediate or delayed. Analysing consequence requires linking outcomes back to the original event.

Intended consequence: an outcome that the key actors aimed for from the start. For instance, slave emancipation was an intended consequence of the American Civil War.

Unintended consequence: an unexpected outcome, often with major impact, like the rise of the women’s suffrage movement partly stemming from abolitionist campaigns.

Direct consequence: flows immediately and unmistakably from the event, e.g. economic sanctions following an invasion.

Indirect consequence: a later, less obvious result that emerges through intermediate steps, such as long-term demographic shifts after a war.

Memory aid: Visualise a row of dominoes. The first push (event) knocks down the first domino (direct consequence), which triggers a chain reaction (indirect consequences). A domino might fly sideways and hit something unexpected (unintended).

3. Change and Continuity |

Historians investigate what transformed and what stayed the same over time. Change is rarely absolute; even in revolutions, many aspects of daily life continue.

Change: a shift in politics, society, economy or culture. Can be rapid (revolutionary) or gradual (evolutionary).

Continuity: persistence of traditions, institutions or structures despite wider changes. The monarchy in Britain is an example of continuity through centuries of political change.

Turning point: a moment when the direction of events decisively alters. The Battle of Britain in 1940 is often seen as a turning point in World War II.

Rate of change: the speed at which change occurs. The Industrial Revolution brought rapid economic change compared with the slower pace of agricultural development.

Memory aid: Think of a river map. The river (continuity) runs through different terrain (change). A waterfall is a turning point
