1. Semiotics – The Sign Theorem |

The fundamental unit of meaning in media texts is the sign. According to Saussure, a sign comprises the signifier (the physical form) and the signified (the mental concept). The relationship between them is arbitrary and cultural. Barthes expanded this with denotation (literal meaning) and connotation (associated cultural meanings), leading to myth – the ideological naturalisation of connotative meanings.

  • Sign = Signifier + Signified
  • Meaning = Denotation + Connotation
  • Myth = Connotation presented as natural truth

2. Barthes’ Narrative Codes |

Barthes identified five codes that structure narratives and encourage active reading. The hermeneutic code (enigma) creates suspense by posing questions; the proairetic code (action) builds tension through sequential events; the semantic code refers to connotative meanings; the symbolic code organises deeper thematic oppositions; and the cultural code draws on shared knowledge and ideology.

Narrative Engagement = Σ (HER + ACT + SEM + SYM + REF)

3. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium |

Todorov proposed that conventional narratives follow a five-stage structure: an initial state of equilibrium is disrupted by an event, leading to a recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair it, and a final new equilibrium. This model applies across film, television drama, news stories and advertising, where a problem is introduced and resolved to reassure audiences.

Narrative = Equil. → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equil.

4. Propp’s Character Functions |

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folktales and identified seven recurring character roles (spheres of action): the villain, the donor, the helper, the princess (and her father), the dispatcher, the hero, and the false hero. Each fulfils a narrative function. Modern media texts often subvert or hybridise these types, but the underlying functions remain a powerful analytical tool.

Opposes the hero
Donor 捐赠者 Provides magical object
Helper 帮手 Aids the hero
Princess 公主 Sought-for person/reward
Dispatcher 派遣者 Sends hero on quest
Hero 英雄 Restores equilibrium
False Hero 假英雄 Claims credit falsely

5. Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Model |

Stuart Hall argued that media messages are encoded with preferred meanings but audiences decode them based on their own social and cultural contexts. Three reading positions are possible: dominant-hegemonic (accepting the intended meaning), negotiated (partly accepting, partly modifying), and oppositional (rejecting the intended meaning and framing an alternative). The model refutes the idea of passive audiences.

Decoded Meaning = Message × Audience’s Cultural Framework

6. Uses and Gratifications Theorem |

This audience-centred approach posits that media consumption is an active process driven by social and psychological needs. Blumler and Katz identified four main gratifications: personal identity (reinforcing values), surveillance (seeking information), personal relationships (social interaction, parasocial bonds), and diversion (escapism, entertainment). Users actively select media to satisfy these needs.

Media Use = f (Identity + Information + Social Interaction + Entertainment)

7. Representation Theorem |

Representation refers to the construction of aspects of reality through media language. David Gauntlett stressed that identities are now more fluid and that media provides resources for identity construction. Richard Dyer examined how stereotypes reduce people to a few exaggerated traits, serving to maintain social boundaries – the ‘typecasting’ equation. Representation = Selection + Mediation + Ideological positioning.

  • Stereotype = Simplified trait + Naturalised + Boundary maintenance
  • Mediation = Selection × Framing × Re-presentation

8. Media Language – The Cinematography Equation |

Cinematography constructs meaning through the deliberate choice of shot size, camera angle, depth of field, and movement. Close-ups create intimacy or intensity; low angles suggest power; tracking shots imply urgency. Combined with lighting, these elements form a visual syntax. A simple analytical formula links technical choice to connotation and audience effect.

Visual Meaning = Shot size × Angle × Lighting × Movement

Extreme Close-up Intensity, emotion
Low Angle Power, authority
High Angle Vulnerability, inferiority
High-key Lighting Optimism, clarity
Low-key Lighting Mystery, danger

9. The Mise-en-scène Composition Principle |

Mise-en-scène encompasses everything placed in front of the camera: setting, props, costume, hair and makeup, figure expression and movement, and colour. Each element carries symbolic weight. The composition principle states that denotation (literal objects) layers connotations that guide the audience’s interpretation of character, genre and theme. Colour palettes operate as visual codes: red for passion/danger, blue for coldness/calm, etc.

Mise-en-scène Meaning = Σ (Setting + Props + Costume + Lighting + Colour)

10. Media Industry – Integration and Power |

Curran and Seaton argue that media ownership shapes content, limiting diversity in favour of profit and dominant ideology. Vertical integration (controlling production, distribution, consumption) and horizontal integration (owning multiple companies at one stage) reduce risk and maximise synergy. The conglomerate equation links scale to cultural power. The public service broadcasting (PSB) model, championed by the BBC, counters this by prioritising educate, inform and entertain.

Media Power = Concentration × Integration × Synergy

11. Cultural Industries Theorem – Hesmondhalgh |

David Hesmondhalgh identifies the cultural industries as risky businesses that rely on the ‘format’ to minimise uncertainty. Key strategies include: the ‘star system’ to guarantee audiences, genre formatting, serialisation, and cross-media promotion. Copyright is the engine of profit. The theorem highlights a tension between creativity and commerce: cultural production = creativity under corporate control.

Profit = (Star + Format + Copyright) × Distribution Scale

12. Advertising – The Persuasion Formula |

Advertising combines emotional and rational appeals to construct a brand identity and stimulate consumption. Gillian Dyer’s lines of appeal (e.g., happy families, elite lifestyles, romantic fantasy) map onto psychological needs. The AIDA model (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) describes the sequential consumer response. Contemporary advertising also uses personal data to tailor messages, in what Shoshana Zuboff calls ‘surveillance capitalism’.

Ad Effectiveness = Emotional appeal × Rational claim × Cultural resonance

  • AIDA: Attention → Interest → Desire → Action
