1. Research Methods and Ethics |
Psychological research relies on a variety of methods, each with its own strengths and limitations. Experiments, whether laboratory, field, or natural, involve the manipulation of an independent variable (IV) to observe its effect on a dependent variable (DV). Correlational studies measure the relationship between two co‑variables without manipulation, indicated by a correlation coefficient (r) ranging from −1 to +1. Observational techniques, self‑report questionnaires, and interviews provide rich qualitative or quantitative data, but they demand careful control of extraneous variables and awareness of demand characteristics.
Ethical considerations are paramount. The British Psychological Society (BPS) Code of Ethics requires researchers to obtain informed consent, avoid deception unless justified and followed by thorough debriefing, give participants the right to withdraw, ensure confidentiality, and protect from harm. Cost‑benefit analyses often evaluate whether the potential gains of a study outweigh any ethical costs. Key ethical issues include invasion of privacy and the use of vulnerable groups, making ethics committees essential gatekeepers.
2. Cognitive Psychology: Models of Memory |
The multi‑store model (MSM), proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968), describes memory as three sequential stores: sensory register, short‑term memory (STM), and long‑term memory (LTM). Information enters the sensory register and, if attended to, passes to STM, a limited‑capacity store (7±2 chunks) with a duration of about 18‑30 seconds. Rehearsal loops maintain STM and eventually transfer material to LTM, which has potentially unlimited capacity and duration. Evidence from brain‑damaged patients like HM, who could not form new long‑term memories but retained his STM, supports the idea of separate stores.
An alternative is the working memory model (WMM) by Baddeley and Hitch (1974), which views STM as an active processor. It consists of a central executive that controls attention and coordinates three slave systems: the phonological loop (dealing with auditory information), the visuospatial sketchpad (handling visual and spatial data), and the episodic buffer (integrating information across domains into a time‑sequenced story). Dual‑task studies, where performing two tasks using the same slave system is more difficult than using different systems, provide strong support for the WMM’s modular nature.
3. Biological Psychology: Stress and the Body |
Stress is a biological and psychological response to perceived threats. The sympathomedullary (SAM) pathway triggers the immediate fight‑or‑flight response: the hypothalamus activates the adrenal medulla, releasing adrenaline and noradrenaline, which increase heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration. Over a longer timescale, the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑adrenal (HPA) axis becomes active; the hypothalamus releases CRF, stimulating the pituitary to secrete ACTH, which prompts the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol. Cortisol helps sustain energy but can suppress the immune system if levels remain chronically elevated.
Research into stress includes Kiecolt‑Glaser et al. (1984), a natural experiment examining the effects of examination stress on the immune functioning of medical students. Blood samples showed reduced natural killer cell activity during exam periods compared to one month before, demonstrating a link between psychological stress and immunosuppression. Another area is life changes and daily hassles: Holmes and Rahe’s Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) assigns life change units to events like divorce or moving, linking high scores to increased likelihood of illness.
4. Social Psychology: Conformity and Obedience |
Conformity is a change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or imagined group pressure. Asch’s line judgement studies (1951, 1956) revealed that participants conformed to an obviously wrong majority answer in about 37% of critical trials. Factors affecting conformity include group size (up to a point), unanimity (a single dissenter sharply reduces conformity), and task difficulty. Informational social influence (desire to be right) and normative social influence (desire to fit in) explain why people conform.
Obedience involves following a direct order, usually from an authority figure. Milgram’s shock experiment (1963) demonstrated disturbingly high obedience: 65% of participants administered what they believed to be a lethal 450‑volt shock. Situational factors like proximity to the victim, authority prestige, and the presence of disobedient peers profoundly influenced obedience levels. Milgram proposed an agency theory, suggesting that people shift into an agentic state where they see themselves as carrying out another’s wishes, thus diffusing personal responsibility. Ethical critiques of his work catalysed modern ethical guidelines.
5. Developmental Psychology: Attachment Types |
Attachment is an enduring emotional bond between an infant and a caregiver, crucial for healthy social and emotional development. Ainsworth’s ‘Strange Situation’ procedure (1978) classifies infants into three main attachment types: Type B (secure) — the infant uses the caregiver as a safe base, shows moderate distress on separation, and is easily comforted on reunion; Type A (insecure‑avoidant) — the infant is indifferent to the caregiver, showing little distress on separation and avoiding contact on reunion; and Type C (insecure‑resistant) — the infant is clingy yet resists comfort, displaying extreme distress both on separation and after reunion. Later research added Type D (disorganised).
Cultural variations in attachment exist. A meta‑analysis by Van Ijzendoorn and Kroonenberg (1988) found that secure attachment was the most common pattern across all cultures studied, but differences emerged in the distribution of insecure types. For example, Germany showed relatively high rates of avoidant attachment, possibly linked to cultural values favouring early independence, while Japan showed higher rates of resistant attachment, perhaps reflecting less frequent separation experiences. Thus, while attachment behaviours may be universal, cultural child‑rearing practices shape their expression.
6. Psychopathology: Major Depressive Disorder |
Psychopathology refers to the study of psychological disorders, their symptoms, causes, and treatments. Depression, a mood disorder, is characterised by persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure (anhedonia), changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and difficulty concentrating. According to diagnostic manuals such as the DSM‑5 or ICD‑11, a diagnosis requires the presence of a certain number of symptoms over at least a two‑week period, causing clinically significant distress or impairment.
Biological explanations for depression include the monoamine hypothesis, which suggests a deficit in neurotransmitters such as serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine. Evidence comes from drugs that increase monoamine levels (e.g., SSRIs) alleviating symptoms, and from reserpine‑induced depletion causing depressive‑like symptoms. However, the theory is incomplete because antidepressants typically take weeks to work, indicating downstream neurogenesis or receptor changes. A cognitive explanation is Beck’s negative triad — negative views of the self, the world, and the future — maintained by cognitive distortions like overgeneralisation and catastrophising. Ellis proposed the ABC model: an Activating event triggers irrational Beliefs leading to maladaptive emotional Consequences. Both approaches inform cognitive‑behavioural therapy (CBT), where patients learn to challenge and restructure distorted thoughts.
7. Psychological Approaches and Debates |
Major psychological approaches offer different lenses for understanding behaviour. The biological approach emphasises genes, brain structures, and neurochemistry, favouring laboratory experiments and brain imaging. The behavioural approach (Watson, Skinner) focuses on observable learning through classical and operant conditioning, using lab experiments and animal models. The cognitive approach examines mental processes like memory, attention, and perception, employing experimental and computer models. The psychodynamic approach (Freud) highlights unconscious drives, early childhood experiences, and defence mechanisms, relying on case studies and clinical interviews. The humanistic approach (Rogers, Maslow) stresses free will, self‑actualisation, and the therapeutic relationship, preferring qualitative methods.
Core debates run through psychology. Determinism versus free will: does behaviour result from forces outside our control, or are we active agents? Nature versus nurture: is behaviour more influenced by innate biological factors or environment and learning? Reductionism versus holism: should phenomena be explained by breaking them down into simplest components, or by considering the whole person and context? Also, idiographic versus nomothetic approaches: focusing on the unique individual using qualitative data, versus seeking general laws through large‑scale quantitative research. CCEA examinations often require applying these debates to topics such as memory, attachment, or psychopathology.
8. Data Analysis and Statistical Testing |
Psychology students must be able to handle data sets and choose appropriate statistical tests. Descriptive statistics summarise data: measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of dispersion (range, variance, standard deviation). The mean is sensitive to outliers, while the median is more robust. Standard deviation quantifies the average spread of scores around the mean. Graphs, including bar charts, histograms, and scattergrams, help visualise patterns.
Inferential statistics allow researchers to draw conclusions about populations from samples. Key considerations are the level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval), the experimental design (independent groups, repeated measures, matched pairs), and whether the data are parametric (normally distributed, homogeneous variance). For AS CCEA, common non‑parametric tests include: Chi‑square for nominal data and independent groups; Mann‑Whitney U for ordinal data and independent groups; Wilcoxon signed‑ranks for ordinal data and repeated measures/matched pairs. Significance is determined by comparing the calculated value to a critical value at a given level of significance (usually p ≤ 0.05). If the calculated value is more extreme, the null hypothesis is rejected, supporting the experimental hypothesis. If using Chi‑square, the calculated value must be equal to or greater than the critical value; for Mann‑Whitney and Wilcoxon, the calculated value must be equal to or less than the critical value. A Type I error is a false positive, while a Type II error is a false negative.
9. Social Influence: Minority Influence and Social Change |
While majorities produce public compliance through normative pressure, minorities can provoke genuine conversion through informational influence. Moscovici’s blue‑green slide studies (1969) demonstrated that a consistent minority could influence a majority to report a different colour, especially when the minority stuck firmly to its position. Consistency, commitment (often shown through sacrifice), and flexibility are key behavioural styles that make minorities effective. Unlike majority conformity, minority influence tends to be internalised, leading to changes on a deeper, private level and often triggering active processing of the issue.
The synergy of majority and minority influence underlies processes of social change. Nemeth (1986) argued that minority views stimulate divergent thinking, leading to more creative solutions, whereas majority pressure narrows focus. Social change often follows a sequence: a consistent minority draws attention to an issue, creates conflict, challenges the status quo, and eventually converts enough people that the behaviour becomes normative. The suffragette movement, civil rights campaigns, and environmental activism illustrate how initial minority positions, through augmentation and the snowball effect, become majority views and new laws.
10. Biopsychology: The Nervous System and Neurotransmission |
The human nervous system comprises the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system, which further divides into the somatic (voluntary control) and autonomic (involuntary control, including sympathetic and parasympathetic branches). Neurons are the basic building blocks: sensory neurons carry signals from receptors to the CNS; motor neurons transmit commands from the CNS to effectors (muscles, glands); and relay or interneurons connect sensory and motor neurons within the CNS.
Neurotransmission occurs via electrochemical signals. Within a neuron, an action potential travels down the axon as a wave of depolarisation caused by ion exchange (Na⁺ in, K⁺ out). At the synapse, the electrical signal triggers vesicles to release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These chemical messengers bind to receptor sites on the postsynaptic neuron, causing either excitation (more likely to fire) or inhibition (less likely). Summation of excitatory and inhibitory inputs determines whether the next neuron fires. Reuptake pumps or enzymatic breakdown remove excess neurotransmitter from the cleft. Drugs like SSRIs inhibit reuptake of serotonin, keeping it active longer.
11. Attachment: Explanations and Maternal Deprivation |
Learning theory offers one explanation for attachment. Classical conditioning suggests the caregiver becomes associated with pleasure due to providing food, thus the baby forms an attachment to the one who feeds them. Operant conditioning proposes that feeding reduces the unpleasant hunger drive (negative reinforcement) and the baby’s smiling evokes rewarding attention (positive reinforcement), shaping attachment behaviours. However, Harlow’s monkey studies (1958) contradicted ‘cupboard love’ theories: infant monkeys preferred a soft, comforting cloth surrogate mother that provided no food over a wire one that provided milk, highlighting the importance of contact comfort.
Bowlby’s maternal deprivation hypothesis (1951) argued that a warm, intimate, and continuous relationship with a mother (or permanent substitute) is essential for mental health, and that prolonged separation in the early critical period (up to 2.5 years, extended to age 5) leads to irreversible emotional damage, including affectionless psychopathy — an inability to form close relationships and a lack of guilt. His 44 thieves study (1944) found that a high proportion of emotionally maladjusted juvenile thieves had experienced early prolonged separation. Although influential, the hypothesis has faced criticism for conflating deprivation and privation, retrospective bias, and for ignoring the role of subsequent care.
12. Psychopathology: Phobias and Behavioural Treatments |
Phobias are anxiety disorders characterised by an extreme, irrational fear of a specific object or situation, which leads to significant avoidance behaviour and distress. The behavioural explanation, based on the two‑process model (Mowrer, 1947), posits that phobias are acquired through classical conditioning — a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a frightening event — and maintained through operant conditioning, as avoidance reduces anxiety (negative reinforcement). Watson and Rayner’s Little Albert study (1920) demonstrated how a fear of a white rat was conditioned by pairing it with a loud, frightening noise.
Behavioural therapies aim to unlearn maladaptive responses. Systematic desensitisation (Wolpe) works through reciprocal inhibition: patients are taught deep relaxation and then gradually exposed to an anxiety hierarchy from least to most feared scenarios while maintaining relaxation, so the fear response is counter‑conditioned. Flooding (implosion) involves immediate, intense exposure to the feared stimulus, preventing avoidance, until the anxiety eventually subsides through extinction. Both therapies have considerable empirical support, but flooding runs ethical risks of high distress and dropout. Cognitive factors are often integrated, acknowledging that phobias also involve irrational beliefs, hence the evolution of cognitive‑behavioural therapy for phobias.
