📚 Case Study Practical Exercises |

Welcome to the KS3 AQA Business case study practical exercises. Case studies are real-world business scenarios that help you apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. In this guide, we will explore a step-by-step approach to analysing business cases, using proven tools such as SWOT and the marketing mix, and finally work through a detailed example to sharpen your analytical skills.

1. What is a Case Study? |

A case study is an in-depth examination of a business situation or decision. It presents facts about a company, its market, and the challenges it faces. You are then asked to analyse the information and propose solutions, just like a real business consultant.

In KS3 Business, case studies are often simplified but cover key concepts such as enterprise, marketing, finance, and operations. They test your ability to identify problems, use business terminology, and support your arguments with evidence from the text.

2. Importance of Case Studies in Business Education |

Case studies bridge the gap between theory and practice. Instead of only memorising definitions, you learn how businesses actually operate. They develop critical thinking, decision-making, and communication skills – all essential for future exams and careers.

By working through realistic scenarios, you can practise applying frameworks like SWOT and the marketing mix in a safe environment. This not only boosts your confidence but also helps you remember concepts better because you see them in action.

3. Key Steps in Case Study Analysis |

Effective case study analysis follows a logical sequence. First, read the case carefully to understand the background and key players. Next, identify the main issues or decisions the business is facing. Then, apply relevant business tools to structure your analysis.

After analysing, evaluate the possible options and make justified recommendations. Always support your points with data or examples from the case. Finally, consider how your suggestions could be implemented, including any potential risks.

4. Understanding the Business Context |

Before diving into analysis, you must paint a clear picture of the business environment. This includes the type of business (e.g. sole trader, partnership), its size, location, target customers, and the industry it operates in. Also note any external factors such as competition, economic conditions, or legal requirements mentioned.

For example, a local bakery facing rising ingredient costs operates in a different context from an online tech start-up seeking investment. Understanding the context prevents you from making unrealistic suggestions that ignore the firm’s resources and constraints.

5. SWOT Analysis | SWOT 分析法

SWOT analysis is one of the most popular tools for summarising a business’s internal and external situation. The acronym stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Strengths and Weaknesses are internal factors that the business can control, while Opportunities and Threats come from the external environment.

Strengths are positive internal attributes, such as a strong brand image, loyal customer base, or unique technology. When analysing a case, look for what the company does better than its rivals.

Weaknesses are internal limitations that place the business at a disadvantage, like high costs, outdated equipment, or poor location. Being honest about weaknesses is essential for improving.

Opportunities are external chances for the business to grow or increase profits. These could include emerging markets, favourable government policies, or gaps in the market.

Threats are external factors that could harm the business, such as new competitors, changing consumer trends, or rising taxes. Identifying threats early helps a business prepare.

The marketing mix describes the four key elements a business uses to market its products effectively: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. When analysing a case study, evaluate each element to see how well the company is meeting customer needs.

Product involves features, design, quality, and branding. Does the product solve a problem? Is it unique compared to competitors? Consider the product’s life cycle stage and any future development plans.

Price refers to how much customers pay. Is the pricing strategy based on cost-plus, competitive pricing, or premium pricing? The price must reflect value while still attracting the target market and covering costs.

Place covers distribution channels and location. How do customers access the product – through a physical shop, online, or via intermediaries? Convenience for the target audience is key.

Promotion consists of the methods used to communicate with customers, such as advertising, social media, sales promotions, and public relations. Effective promotion raises awareness and encourages purchases.

7. Basics of Financial Analysis |

Even at KS3 level, a simple financial snapshot can reveal a lot about a business. The three main figures to examine are revenue, costs, and profit. Revenue is the total money earned from sales. Costs include both the cost of making the product (cost of sales) and operating expenses like rent and wages.

Gross profit is calculated as revenue minus cost of sales. It shows how efficiently the business produces its goods. Net profit subtracts all other expenses from gross profit, representing the final earnings.

Gross Profit = Revenue – Cost of Sales

Gross Profit Margin = (Gross Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100%

Net Profit = Gross Profit – Operating Expenses

A high gross profit margin indicates strong pricing power or low production costs, while a declining net profit may signal rising overheads. Always compare financial figures with previous years or industry benchmarks if possible.

8. Identifying Problems and Opportunities |

Once you have gathered information from SWOT, the marketing mix, and financial data, stand back and ask: what is the core challenge? A problem might be declining sales, low brand awareness, or high staff turnover. It could also be an untapped opportunity, like a new demographic segment or a trend the business can exploit.

Define the problem clearly and avoid jumping to conclusions. For instance, if profits are falling, determine whether it is due to lower revenue or higher costs. Precision in problem definition leads to more targeted recommendations.

9. Making Feasible Recommendations |

Recommendations should be specific, practical, and justified by your earlier analysis. A vague suggestion such as ‘improve marketing’ is not helpful; instead, propose a concrete action like ‘launch a social media campaign targeting 18–25 year olds with a budget of £500 per month’.

Always consider the business’s resources. A small start-up cannot afford a national TV advert. Link each recommendation to an identified problem or opportunity. Explain why it will work, what it will cost, and how long it might take to see results.

Let us now put all the steps together with a fictional case study. Green Plant World is a small indoor plant shop located in a busy suburban high street. It is run by two partners, Maya and Raj, and has been operating for three years. The shop sells a range of houseplants, pots, and accessories. Recently, sales have been flat, and a large garden centre has opened two miles away offering similar plants at lower prices. In addition, an online plant delivery service has become popular among local residents.

The partners have provided the following financial summary for the last year: Revenue £50,000, Cost of Sales £20,000, and Operating Expenses (rent, wages, utilities) £18,000. They are willing to invest up to £2,000 in improvements but are unsure where to focus.

Below is a SWOT analysis for Green Plant World:

Strengths Knowledgeable staff; loyal local customer base; exclusive handmade pots; central high street location.
Weaknesses No online presence; limited range compared to garden centre; higher prices due to small scale; limited marketing.
Opportunities Growing trend for indoor plants among young professionals; possibility to offer workshops; collaboration with local cafes; expanding into online sales.
Threats New garden centre with lower prices; rising online competition; potential rent increase; changing consumer habits post-pandemic.

The SWOT reveals that while Green Plant World has strong expertise and local loyalty, it is vulnerable to price competition and lacks online visibility. The growing plant trend and workshop potential represent clear opportunities.

Now let us examine the marketing mix. The product range is of good quality and includes unique handmade pots, which differentiate the shop. However, the product variety is narrower than the garden centre. Price is higher because Green Plant World cannot achieve the same economies of scale. Place is a strong point – the high street location brings foot traffic – but without online selling, the shop misses customers who prefer to browse from home. Promotion relies mainly on word-of-mouth and occasional leaflets; there is no social media strategy.

Financially, we can calculate the following: Gross Profit = £50,000 – £20,000 = £30,000. Gross Profit Margin = (£30,000 ÷ £50,000) × 100% = 60%. Net Profit = £30,000 – £18,000 = £12,000. Net Profit Margin = (£12,000 ÷ £50,000) × 100% = 24%. The margins look healthy, indicating the shop is controlling production costs well. However, flat sales mean the absolute profit is not growing, and operating expenses consume a significant chunk of gross profit.

Based on this analysis, we can identify the core problem: Green Plant World needs to increase revenue to overcome flat growth, while defending against lower-priced competitors. There is also a clear opportunity to modernise marketing and expand the customer base.

Feasible recommendations include: (1) Create an Instagram page and a basic website using the £2,000 budget to start online orders and local delivery. This tackles the online threat and caters to changing habits. (2) Launch ‘Plant Care Saturday Workshops’ charged at £15 per person, using the expertise of staff to generate a new revenue stream and attract footfall. (3) Partner with a nearby coffee shop to supply tabletop plants with small tags advertising Green Plant World. (4) Introduce a loyalty card scheme to reward repeat purchases. These actions utilise existing strengths and require only modest investment.

11. How to Write a Case Study Report |

A clear report structure helps you present your analysis professionally. Start with a brief introduction summarising the case. Then describe the business context and key issues. Follow with your analysis, using subheadings such as SWOT, Marketing Mix, and Financial Review.

Next, discuss possible solutions and evaluate them briefly. Finally, present your chosen recommendations with justification. Use evidence from the case to back up every claim. Avoid lengthy descriptions; focus on evaluation and application.

12. Common Mistakes and Tips |

One of the biggest mistakes is rewriting the case study instead of analysing it. Examiners already know the case; they want to see your thinking. Another common pitfall is offering recommendations that ignore the financial reality – always check the budget and resources mentioned in the case.

Avoid using generic business phrases without context. Every point you make should be linked to a specific detail from the case. Also, practise time management: allocate enough time to reading, planning, writing, and proofreading. Bullet points can be effective in exams if full sentences are used.

Remember, there is rarely one ‘correct’ answer in business case studies. What matters is the quality of your justification. So, explain why you have chosen a particular course of action and what you expect the outcome to be.
