📚 Essay Writing Framework and Model Answers |

Writing a strong psychology essay at KS3 level is not just about knowing the facts—it is about presenting them in a clear, well-organised way and showing that you can think critically about the material. This guide will walk you through a reliable essay-writing framework and provide full model answers to help you understand exactly what an AQA examiner is looking for.

1. Understanding the Essay Question |

Before you write a single word, spend a few minutes unpacking the question. Look for command words such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘outline’, ‘discuss’ or ‘evaluate’. ‘Describe’ asks you to give a detailed account; ‘explain’ requires you to say why or how something happens; ‘evaluate’ means you must give strengths and weaknesses. Highlight the key content terms—for example, ‘multi-store model of memory’ or ‘Asch’s conformity study’—so you know exactly what to focus on.

2. Overview of Essay Structure |

A well-planned essay always follows a basic three-part structure: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction tells the reader what the essay will be about and briefly states your main argument. The body is made up of several paragraphs, each making one clear point supported by psychological evidence. The conclusion sums up your arguments without adding new ideas. For a 9-mark AQA KS3 question, you should aim for an introduction, two to three body paragraphs, and a short conclusion.

3. Writing the Introduction |

Start your introduction by defining the key psychological term or theory. Then briefly outline what your essay will cover. For example, if the question is about the multi-store model, you might write: ‘The multi-store model of memory, proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968), suggests that memory is made up of three separate stores: the sensory register, short-term memory and long-term memory. This essay will describe the model and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses.’

4. Body Paragraphs: The PEEL Structure | 主体段落:PEEL 结构

Each body paragraph should follow the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start with a clear point that relates to the question. Then provide evidence—this could be the name of a researcher, a key study, or a specific fact about the theory. Next, explain what the evidence shows and why it supports your point. Finally, link back to the question to keep your essay focused. Using PEEL prevents paragraphs from becoming a list of facts and helps you demonstrate understanding.

5. Using Psychological Evidence |

Evidence is what turns an opinion into a psychological argument. Always name the researcher and the year if you can—for instance, ‘Peterson and Peterson (1959) found that…’. Describe the study briefly: what method was used, what the participants did, and what the results were. You do not need to write every single detail, but you must include enough to show that you know why the study is relevant. Avoid just saying ‘studies show’—be specific.

6. Evaluation and Critical Thinking |

Evaluation is where you earn the highest marks. You can evaluate a theory by discussing its strengths (e.g., supporting evidence, practical applications) and weaknesses (e.g., research limitations, alternative explanations). Use evaluation frameworks like GRAVE: Generalisability, Reliability, Application, Validity, Ethics. For example, you might say: ‘One strength of the multi-store model is that it is supported by case studies of amnesia patients, but a weakness is that it oversimplifies memory by ignoring different types of long-term memory.’ Always give a ‘however’ side.

7. Writing the Conclusion |

A good conclusion briefly restates your main argument and wraps up the evaluation. Do not introduce any new studies or points. Start with a phrase such as ‘In conclusion’ or ‘Overall’. Summarise what your paragraphs have shown and perhaps give a final judgement—for example, which side of the argument is stronger. A short, confident conclusion leaves a lasting impression on the examiner.

8. Model Essay 1: The Multi-Store Model of Memory |

Question: Discuss the multi-store model of memory. Refer to evidence in your answer. (9 marks)

The multi-store model of memory was developed by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968. It proposes that memory consists of three separate stores: the sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Information passes between these stores in a linear way, and attention is required to move information from the sensory register into STM, while rehearsal helps transfer it from STM to LTM.

The sensory register receives information from all our senses. It has a very large capacity but a very brief duration—iconic memory (visual) lasts about half a second, and echoic memory (auditory) lasts around two seconds. Most information here decays rapidly unless we pay attention to it. Short-term memory has a limited capacity of around 7 ± 2 items, as found by Miller (1956). Its duration is about 18–30 seconds without rehearsal, shown by Peterson and Peterson (1959) in their trigram experiment. Long-term memory has potentially unlimited capacity and duration, and information is encoded mainly by meaning (semantic coding).

One strength of the model is that it has supporting research. For example, the case study of patient HM, who had his hippocampus removed and could no longer form new long-term memories while his STM remained intact, supports the idea of separate stores. However, the model is oversimplified. It suggests STM and LTM are single, unitary stores, but research by Tulving suggested there are different types of LTM, such as episodic, semantic and procedural. The working memory model by Baddeley and Hitch also showed that STM is not just a single store but has multiple components. Furthermore, the multi-store model focuses too much on rehearsal and ignores the fact that we often remember things without actively repeating them. Overall, while the model provides a useful foundation for understanding memory, it is too simple to explain all aspects of how memory really works.

9. Model Essay 2: Conformity Research |

Question: Describe and evaluate one study of conformity. (9 marks)

Solomon Asch conducted a classic study on conformity in 1951. He wanted to see whether people would conform to an obviously wrong answer given by a group. The participants were male American college students who were told they were taking part in a visual perception test. In each trial, they sat in a group of confederates and were asked to say which of three comparison lines matched a standard line in length. The answer was always obvious, but the confederates were instructed to give the same wrong answer on 12 out of 18 trials. The real participant was always seated last or second to last.

Asch found that on the critical trials, about 75% of participants conformed at least once, and the overall conformity rate was around 32%. In contrast, participants in a control group made almost no errors. After the experiment, many participants said they knew the answer was wrong but conformed because they did not want to stand out or be ridiculed. This shows normative social influence—conforming to fit in with the group.

One strength of Asch’s study is its high internal validity, as he used a standardised procedure and controlled variables carefully. However, there are several weaknesses. The sample was biased—it used only male American students, so the findings may not generalise to females or people from collectivist cultures, where conformity rates might be higher. The task was artificial and lacked mundane realism; judging line lengths is not something people do in real life. There are also ethical concerns, as participants were deceived and may have felt embarrassed or stressed. Nevertheless, the study provides a powerful demonstration of how social pressure can influence our behaviour, even when we know something is clearly wrong.

10. Common Mistakes and How to Improve |

One of the most frequent mistakes is simply retelling the study without any evaluation. Always balance description with at least one or two evaluative points. Another common error is failing to use key psychological vocabulary, such as ‘normative social influence’, ‘semantic coding’ or ‘capacity’. Keep a glossary of terms and use them actively. Also, avoid vague claims like ‘the study was good because it was reliable’—instead, explain why by linking to a specific method or finding. Structure is vital: a jumbled essay loses marks even if the facts are correct.

11. Time Management and Planning |

For a 9-mark essay in a KS3 assessment, you will typically have about 12–15 minutes. Spend the first 2–3 minutes planning a brief outline: write down the key points for your introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. This outline will keep you on track and prevent you from forgetting important evaluation points. Aim to write for about 8–10 minutes, leaving 2 minutes to check spelling, punctuation and whether you have answered all parts of the question.

12. Checking and Polishing |

After you finish writing, read through your essay quickly. Check that you have used correct psychology vocabulary, that all study names and dates are as accurate as you can make them, and that your paragraphs follow the PEEL structure. Look out for common language errors, and make sure your conclusion does not introduce anything new. A well-polished essay, even with small corrections, can move up a grade boundary because it shows the examiner you care about accuracy and clarity.
