1. Basic Economic Concepts |

Economics is the social science that examines how people use scarce resources to produce goods and services and distribute them among different groups.

Scarcity means that there are never enough resources to satisfy all human wants and needs, so choices must be made.

A choice is the decision between alternative uses of limited resources; every choice involves giving up something else.

2. Needs and Wants |

Needs are goods or services that are essential for survival, such as food, water, shelter and clothing.

Wants are desires for goods and services that are not necessary for survival but make life more comfortable or enjoyable, like a smartphone or a holiday.

Because wants are unlimited while resources are limited, economics helps us prioritise how to use what we have.

3. Goods and Services |

Goods are tangible items that can be seen and touched, such as books, bicycles and apples. They can be durable (long-lasting) or non-durable (used up quickly).

Services are intangible activities provided by others, such as education, haircuts, or public transport. You cannot hold a service in your hand.

Both goods and services are produced to satisfy people’s needs and wants, and they often work together – for instance, a smartphone (good) requires network coverage (service).

4. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice. It is not simply the money spent, but what you could have gained from the second-best option.

For example, if you spend one hour studying economics instead of playing football, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment and exercise you miss.

Understanding opportunity cost helps individuals, businesses and governments make more informed decisions by weighing what is sacrificed.

5. Factors of Production |

Factors of production are the resources used to create goods and services. They are traditionally grouped into four categories: land, labour, capital and enterprise.

Land refers to all natural resources, including soil, minerals, water and forests. It provides the raw materials for production.

Labour is the human effort, both physical and mental, used in production. The quality of labour depends on education and skills, known as human capital.

Capital means man-made resources used to make other goods, such as machinery, tools, factories and computers. This is different from financial capital (money).

Enterprise is the ability to combine the other three factors, take risks and innovate. The person who does this is an entrepreneur.

6. Demand and Supply |

Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices over a given time period. Generally, as price rises, quantity demanded falls – this is the law of demand.

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices. Typically, higher prices encourage greater supply.

Market equilibrium occurs where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. At this point, there is no shortage or surplus, and the price tends to be stable.

If demand increases while supply stays the same, prices tend to rise and vice versa. These shifts help explain many real-world price changes.

7. Markets and Price Mechanism |

A market is any arrangement that allows buyers and sellers to exchange goods, services or resources. Markets can be physical (like a local bazaar) or online (like an e-commerce platform).

The price mechanism describes how the forces of demand and supply interact to determine prices and allocate scarce resources. It acts as a signal to consumers and producers.

When a good is scarce, its price rises, signaling producers to supply more and consumers to buy less, bringing the market back towards balance.

Competition among sellers can lead to better quality and lower prices, while competition among buyers can drive prices up.

8. Money and Banking |

Money is any item that is widely accepted as payment for goods and services. It serves as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value and a standard of deferred payment.

Banks are financial institutions that accept deposits, make loans and provide other financial services. Commercial banks help individuals and businesses save and borrow.

Interest is the cost of borrowing money or the reward for saving. When you deposit money in a bank, you earn interest; when you take a loan, you pay interest.

Central banks, like the Bank of England or the People’s Bank of China, manage a country’s money supply and aim to keep prices stable.

9. International Trade |

International trade is the exchange of goods and services across national borders. Exports are goods sold to other countries, while imports are goods bought from abroad.

Countries trade because they have different resources, skills and natural advantages. Specialisation allows a country to focus on producing what it makes best, then trade for other products.

Comparative advantage is the ability to produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than another producer. This concept explains why trade can benefit all parties, even if one country is better at producing everything.

Exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another. When a currency strengthens, imports become cheaper but exports become dearer for foreign buyers.

10. Economic Indicators and Government Aims |

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total value of all goods and services produced within a country in a year. It is a common measure of economic growth.

Inflation is the sustained rise in the general price level over time. When inflation is high, money loses purchasing power, meaning each unit of currency buys fewer goods.

Unemployment refers to people who are willing and able to work but cannot find a job. The unemployment rate measures the percentage of the labour force that is jobless.

Governments often aim for stable economic growth, low inflation, full employment and a balanced trade position. These goals help create a healthy economy for all.

Economic policy tools such as taxation and government spending (fiscal policy) or managing interest rates and money supply (monetary policy) are used to influence these indicators.
