Products: carbon dioxide (4.4 g) + water (3.6 g) = 8.0 g. So, 1.6 g + mass of oxygen = 8.0 g. Mass of oxygen = 8.0 g – 1.6 g = 6.4 g.

Non-metals, in contrast, are usually dull, brittle if solid, and poor conductors of electricity (except graphite, a form of carbon).

For oxygen, a glowing splint relights; for carbon dioxide, limewater turns milky.

These acids dissolve in cloud droplets and fall to the ground as acid rain, which has a pH lower than normal rain (about 5.6). One harmful effect is that acid rain can make lakes and rivers too acidic for fish and other aquatic life to survive. It also damages forests, erodes buildings made of limestone and accelerates the corrosion of metal structures.
