1. The Simile Theorem | 明喻定理

Simile: X is like Y | X is as … as …

A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’. The theorem tells you that by linking an unfamiliar idea (X) to a familiar, concrete image (Y), the writer creates an instant mental picture. For example, ‘The mist hung over the valley like a damp blanket’ makes us feel the heaviness and closeness of the air. When you spot a simile, ask what two things are being compared and what quality is being highlighted.

明喻是一种修辞手法,使用“像”或“如”等词直接比较两种不同的事物。这条定理告诉你,通过将不熟悉的概念(X)与熟悉的、具体的意象(Y)联系起来,作者能立即在读者脑海中勾勒画面。例如,“雾气像一条潮湿的毯子悬挂在山谷上方”让我们感受到空气的沉重和逼仄。当你发现明喻时,问一问拿什么和什么比较,突出了哪种特质。

The effect is often to create mood, emphasise a particular sensory detail, or make an abstract idea tangible. In your analysis, use this formula: The simile ‘X is like Y’ suggests that X shares the quality of Y, which makes the reader feel/see/understand…

明喻的效果通常是营造气氛、强调某种感官细节,或使抽象的概念变得可以触及。在分析中,用这个公式:“像……一样”的明喻暗示X具有Y的特质,让读者感受到/看到/理解到……

2. The Metaphor Equation | 隐喻方程式

Metaphor: X = Y

A metaphor is an equation that states one thing is another, without using ‘like’ or ‘as’. It claims that X equals Y, transforming our understanding of X. For instance, ‘Life is a roller-coaster’ is not literally true, but the equation forces us to think of ups, downs, speed, and excitement. Metaphors are more direct and powerful than similes because they assert an identity. Look for hidden equations when you read: the poet is not saying the sun is similar to a golden coin; she says the sun is a golden coin.

隐喻是一个等式,它直接说一件事物就是另一件事物,而不使用“像”或“如”。它声称X等于Y,从而转变我们对X的理解。例如,“人生是一场过山车”在字面上不成立,但这个等式迫使我们联想到起伏、速度与刺激。隐喻比明喻更直接有力,因为它断言了一种身份。阅读时,寻找隐藏的等式:诗人不是说太阳像一枚金币,而是说太阳就是一枚金币。

To analyse a metaphor, identify what two elements are being equated, and explore the connotations of Y that are transferred to X. This equation reveals the writer’s attitude and deepens theme.

分析隐喻时,找出被等同起来的两个元素,并探讨Y的哪些隐含意义被转移到了X上。这个方程式揭示作者的态度,并深化主题。

3. The Personification Principle | 拟人原理

Personification: Object/Abstraction + Human Trait or Action

Personification gives human qualities, emotions, or actions to inanimate objects, ideas, or animals. The principle is that when the wind ‘howls angrily’ or time ‘creeps up on you’, the writer makes abstract or non-living things feel alive and relatable. This device builds empathy, creates atmosphere, and can even symbolise larger forces at work.

拟人手法赋予无生命物体、抽象概念或动物以人的特质、情感或行为。这个原理在于,当风“愤怒地咆哮”或时间“悄悄接近你”时,作者让抽象或非生命之物变得鲜活、可感。这种手法能建立共情、营造氛围,甚至可以象征更大的力量在起作用。

Whenever you encounter personification, ask what human attribute is given and why. The effect often turns a setting into a character in its own right, reflecting the mood of the protagonist or warning of change.

每当你遇到拟人时,问一问赋予了何种人的属性,以及为何如此。其效果常把背景环境本身变成一个角色,反映主人公的情绪或预示变化的到来。

4. The Alliteration Formula | 头韵公式

Alliteration: Same initial consonant sound repeated in close succession

Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of words that are close together. The formula is simple: pick a consonant (b, d, s, etc.) and repeat it. For example, ‘The sly snake slithered silently’ creates a hissing effect that mirrors the snake’s movement. Alliteration can draw attention to a phrase, create rhythm, or evoke a sound that reinforces meaning.

头韵是指在邻近单词的开头重复相同的辅音音素。公式很简单:选一个辅音(如 b、d、s 等),然后重复。例如,“那条狡猾的蛇悄悄滑行”(The sly snake slithered silently)创造出嘶嘶声,与蛇的动作呼应。头韵能吸引读者注意某个短语,创造节奏,或通过声音强化意义。

When you spot alliteration, consider whether the sound is harsh (plosives like b, p) or soft (sibilants like s, sh). Harsh sounds can suggest anger or danger, while soft sounds can suggest calm or menace. Always link your observation to the poem’s tone or the character’s state of mind.

当你发现头韵时,想想这个音是生硬的(爆破音如b、p)还是柔和的(嘶音如s、sh)。生硬的声音可能暗示愤怒或危险,柔和的声音可能暗示平静或威胁。始终把你观察到的现象与诗歌的语气或角色的心境联系起来。

5. The Rhyme Scheme Rule | 押韵格式法则

Rhyme Scheme: Pattern of end rhymes, labelled a b a b, etc.

Rhyme scheme is the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of lines in a poem. The rule is to assign a new letter to each new rhyme sound. The most common patterns are couplets (a a), alternate rhyme (a b a b), and envelope rhyme (a b b a). Understanding the rhyme scheme helps you see how a poem is built and can highlight key ideas. For example, a couplet at the end of a Shakespearean sonnet often delivers a powerful twist or conclusion.

押韵格式是诗歌每行末尾押韵的有序模式。法则是每个新的韵脚用新的字母标记。最常见的模式是双行押韵(a a)、交叉韵(a b a b)和抱韵(a b b a)。理解押韵格式有助于看清诗歌的构建方式,并突出关键思想。例如,莎士比亚十四行诗末尾的对句常常带来强有力的转折或结论。

Use this rule to map a poem’s music. A regular rhyme scheme can suggest order and control, while an irregular or broken rhyme scheme might reflect chaos, uncertainty, or a fractured state of mind. Always ask how the rhyme scheme contributes to the poem’s overall meaning.

运用这条法则来描绘诗歌的音乐性。规整的押韵格式可能暗示秩序与掌控,而不规则的或断裂的押韵则可能映射出混乱、不确定性或破碎的心境。记得问一问押韵格式是如何为诗歌的整体意义服务的。

6. The PEEL Paragraph Theorem | PEEL 段落定理

PEEL: P (Point) → E (Evidence) → E (Explanation) → L (Link)

The PEEL paragraph is a structural theorem for writing analytical paragraphs in literature essays. You begin with a clear Point that answers the question. Then you supply Evidence in the form of a quotation from the text. Next, you Explain how the evidence proves your point, examining language and effect. Finally, you Link back to the question or forward to the next paragraph. This formula keeps your argument focused and well-supported.

PEEL 段落是文学论文中分析性段落的写作结构定理。首先,你提出一个清晰的观点(Point)来回答问题。接着,你引用文本中的引文作为证据(Evidence)。然后,你解释(Explanation)证据如何证明你的观点,剖析语言和效果。最后,你回扣问题或衔接到下一段(Link)。这条公式使你的论证集中且有据可依。

For example, if the question is ‘How does the writer create a sense of fear?’, a PEEL paragraph might start: Point – The writer uses dark imagery to build fear. Evidence – ‘The shadows crept along the walls like living things.’ Explanation – The simile ‘like living things’ suggests the shadows have a menacing will of their own, making the ordinary seem threatening. Link – This pervasive darkness preys on the protagonist’s mind, intensifying the atmosphere of dread.

例如,如果问题是“作者如何营造恐惧感?”,PEEL 段落可以这样展开:观点——作者运用黑暗意象营造恐惧;证据——“影子像活物一样沿着墙壁爬行”;解释——“像活物一样”这个明喻暗示影子具有自己的恶意意志,让平常之物显得充满威胁;回扣——这种无处不在的黑暗蚕食着主人公的心智,加剧了恐惧的氛围。

7. The Character Arc Formula | 角色弧光公式

Character Arc: Initial State → Conflict/Change → Transformed State

A character arc describes the inner transformation a character undergoes over the course of a story. The formula tracks three stages: who the character is at the beginning, the conflicts or events that catalyse change, and who the character becomes at the end. Not all characters change; some remain static, but their steadfastness can be equally revealing. Recognising the arc helps you discuss theme and character development.

角色弧光描述的是一个角色在故事过程中经历的内心转变。公式追踪三个阶段:角色开始时是谁;催化改变的冲突或事件;以及角色最终变成了谁。并非所有角色都会改变;有些是静态角色,但他们的坚定不移同样能揭示主题。识别角色弧光有助于探讨主题和人物发展。

When you analyse a character, map out this formula. Use phrases like ‘at first, the character is presented as … however, after the key event of …, they learn that … which is shown by …’ This helps you construct a nuanced argument about the writer’s message.

分析角色时,按这个公式勾勒。用上这样的句式:“起初,角色被呈现为……然而,在……的关键事件之后,他们认识到……这一点通过……展现出来。”这能帮助你构建关于作者想要传达的信息的细致论点。

8. The Conflict Equation | 冲突方程式

Conflict: Protagonist vs. Force (Person, Self, Society, Nature, Fate)

Conflict is the engine of any plot. The equation states that the protagonist struggles against an opposing force. KS3 literature will often present one or more of the following types:

冲突是任何情节的引擎。这个方程式表明,主角与一股对立的力量相抗争。KS3 阶段的文学常会呈现以下一种或多种冲突类型:

Type of Conflict | 冲突类型 Explanation | 解释 Example | 示例
Character vs. Character 人与人 Struggle between two individuals 两个人物之间的斗争 Harry Potter vs. Voldemort
Character vs. Self 人与自我 Internal struggle within a character’s mind 角色内心的斗争 A child overcoming fear of the dark
Character vs. Society 人与社会 A character fights against rules, norms, or institutions 角色反抗规则、习俗或制度 Katniss Everdeen vs. the Capitol
Character vs. Nature 人与自然 Battle against natural forces 与自然力量的搏斗 Robinson Crusoe vs. the sea and island

Understanding the nature of the conflict allows you to comment on the stakes and the theme. For instance, a character vs. self conflict often highlights moral dilemmas, while character vs. society may critique injustice. Always ask: what does this conflict reveal about the characters or the world of the text?

理解冲突的性质能让你评论利害关系和主题。例如,人与自我的冲突往往凸显道德困境,而人与社会的冲突可能批判不公。永远要问:这个冲突揭示了角色或文本世界的什么?

9. The Imagery Principle | 意象原理

Imagery: Sensory Language → Mental Picture / Sensory Experience

Imagery uses vivid description that appeals to one or more of the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The principle is that the writer selects words that trigger a sensory experience in the reader’s mind, making the scene immediate and real. For example, ‘the stench of rotting seaweed mixed with the sharp salt breeze’ evokes smell and touch at once. Imagery is not just visual; the richest passages often layer different senses together.

意象运用生动的描述来调动五种感官中的一种或多种——视觉、听觉、嗅觉、味觉和触觉。原理在于,作者选择能触发读者感官体验的词汇,使场景变得亲切而真实。例如,“腐烂海藻的恶臭混合着刺鼻的咸腥海风”同时唤起了嗅觉和触觉。意象不限于视觉;最丰富的段落常常将不同的感官叠加在一起。

When you analyse imagery, identify the sense(s) involved and the connotations of the descriptive words. Then explain how the imagery contributes to the mood, reveals character, or reinforces a theme. A dark, cold, and silent imagery cluster will create a very different effect from warm, bright, and noisy imagery.

分析意象时,先确定涉及哪种感官,以及描述性词语的内涵。然后解释该意象如何营造气氛、揭示角色或强化主题。黑暗、寒冷、寂静的意象集合会创造出与温暖、明亮、喧闹的意象截然不同的效果。

10. The Tone Equation | 语气方程式

Tone: Word Choice + Syntax + Imagery → Attitude or Feeling

Tone is the writer’s attitude toward the subject or audience, conveyed through language. The equation shows that tone results from the combination of diction (word choice), sentence structure (syntax), and imagery. For example, short, blunt sentences with harsh diction like ‘The door slammed. Darkness swallowed her. Silence.’ create an urgent, ominous tone. Longer, flowing sentences with gentle imagery produce a calm or reflective tone.

语气是作者通过语言传达的对主题或读者的态度。这个方程式表明,语气是措辞(选词)、句式结构和意象相结合的结果。例如,短促、生硬的句子加上粗粝的用词,如“门砰地关上。黑暗吞噬了她。一片死寂。”创造出紧张不祥的语气。而长长的、流动的句子搭配柔和的意象,则营造出平静或沉思的语气。

To determine tone, ask yourself what emotions the words stir in you. Is the tone nostalgic, sarcastic, hopeful, ominous, playful? Then isolate the elements of the equation that produce that effect. Linking tone to theme is a high-level skill: a sarcastic tone might criticise a social issue, while a nostalgic tone may emphasise loss.

要判断语气,问问自己这些词在你心中激起了什么情绪。语气是怀旧的、讽刺的、充满希望的、不祥的,还是俏皮的?然后分离出方程式中产生这种效果的元素。将语气与主题联系起来是一种高阶技能:讽刺的语气可能在批判某个社会问题,而怀旧的语气可能在烘托失落感。

11. The Setting Formula | 背景公式

Setting: Time + Place + Atmosphere → Context for Action

The setting formula reminds you that a story’s location and time period are never neutral. They combine with atmosphere (created by weather, lighting, sounds) to establish a context that shapes characters and plot. A gloomy, fog-covered Victorian street sets a different stage than a sunny beach in summer. Setting can reflect a character’s inner state, create conflict, or symbolise bigger ideas.

背景公式提醒你,故事发生的地点和时代绝不会是中性的。它们与气氛(由天气、光线、声音所营造)相结合,构成塑造角色和情节的语境。一条阴郁、浓雾笼罩的维多利亚时代街道,与夏日阳光海滩搭建的舞台截然不同。背景可以映照角色的内心状态,制造冲突,或象征更宏大的思想。

When analysing setting, don’t just list details; interpret them. Ask why the writer chose this particular place or time, and how it influences the narrative. For instance, a confined, claustrophobic room may intensify a character’s anxiety and become a metaphor for entrapment.

分析背景时,不要仅仅罗列细节;要解读它们。问问作者为什么选择这个特定地点或时间,它又是如何影响叙事的。例如,一个封闭、令人窒息的房间,可能加剧角色的焦虑,并成为困境的隐喻。

12. The Theme Theorem | 主题定理

Theme Theorem: Repeated Motifs + Character Development + Conflicts → Big Idea

A theme is not a single word like ‘love’ or ‘war’; it is a complete idea about a universal concept that the text explores. The theorem holds that you can infer theme by tracking recurring motifs (images, words, symbols), observing how characters change (or fail to change), and noting the central conflicts. For example, a novel that repeatedly shows acts of kindness between strangers, while the protagonist learns to trust others after a betrayal, may have a theme: ‘Genuine human connection can heal past wounds.’

主题不是像“爱情”或“战争”这样的单个词语;它是文本所探讨的关于某个普遍概念的完整思想。这条定理认为,你可以通过追踪重复出现的母题(意象、词汇、象征),观察角色如何改变(或未能改变),并注意核心冲突,来推断主题。例如,一本小说不断展现陌生人之间的善行,而主角在遭受背叛后学会信任他人,那么主题可能是:“真挚的人际联结可以治愈过往的创伤。”

Use this theorem to move from summary to analysis. State the theme as a sentence, then show how the writer builds it step by step. Always link your evidence back to this central idea. This is the ultimate goal of literary study—to understand what the text says about life and human nature.

运用这条定理,从概括走向分析。把主题表述为一个完整的句子,然后展示作者如何一步步构建它。始终把你的证据与这一中心思想联系起来。这是文学学习的终极目标——理解文本对人生和人性说了些什么。
