📚 KS3 CIE English: Quick-Reference Formulas & Principles Handbook | KS3 CIE 英语:公式定理速查手册

In English, ‘formulas’ are not equations with numbers – they are reliable patterns for building sentences, paragraphs and entire texts. Mastering these language formulas makes your writing clearer and your reading comprehension sharper. This handbook gathers the essential rules, structures and conventions you will use throughout KS3 CIE English.

在英语中,“公式”并不是带数字的方程式,而是构成句子、段落乃至整篇文章的可靠模式。掌握这些语言公式能让你的写作更清晰,阅读理解更敏锐。本手册汇集了你在KS3 CIE英语学习中需要用到的核心规则、结构和惯例。

1. Sentence Formulas | 句子公式

Every complete sentence follows a basic formula. The simplest is Subject + Verb (SV): ‘Dogs bark.’ Most statements expand to Subject + Verb + Object (SVO): ‘The girl kicked the ball.’ Questions invert or add auxiliary verbs: (Question Word) + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb? ‘Where did you go?’ Commands drop the subject: Verb + Object. ‘Close the door.’ Always check that your sentence has a subject and a finite verb; leave nothing as a fragment.

每个完整的句子都遵循一个基本公式。最简单的形式是主语+动词(SV):“狗叫。”大多数陈述句扩展为主语+动词+宾语(SVO):“女孩踢了球。”疑问句通过倒装或添加助动词来构成:(疑问词)+助动词+主语+主动词?“你去了哪里?”祈使句省略主语:动词+宾语。“关上门。”始终检查句子是否含有主语和限定动词,不要让句子变成残缺的片段。

2. Punctuation Marks as Formulas | 标点符号公式

Punctuation is a set of visual formulas that clarify meaning. A full stop ends a statement. A comma separates items in a list or clauses: ‘We bought apples, oranges and bananas.’ An apostrophe shows possession (the girl’s book) or contraction (don’t). Quotation marks wrap direct speech: ‘Hello,’ she said. The semicolon joins two related complete sentences without a conjunction; the colon introduces a list or explanation. Learn these placements as fixed patterns.

标点符号是一套用来明确意义的视觉公式。句号结束陈述句。逗号分隔列表项或从句:“我们买了苹果、橙子和香蕉。”撇号表示所有格(女孩的书)或缩略形式(don’t)。引号包裹直接引语:“你好,”她说。分号连接两个相关但不用连词的完整句子;冒号则引出列表或解释。要把这些位置的摆放当成固定模式来学习。

3. Tense Formulas | 时态公式

English tense shows when an action happens. The present simple formula is Subject + base verb (add -s for third-person singular): ‘He plays.’ The past simple usually takes Subject + verb-ed (irregulars change): ‘They walked.’ The present continuous is Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing: ‘I am reading.’ The present perfect uses Subject + have/has + past participle: ‘She has finished.’ Each tense has a clear auxiliary + verb pattern; memorise those patterns and you will always form tenses correctly.

英语时态表明动作发生的时间。一般现在时的公式是主语+动词原形(第三人称单数加-s):“他玩。”一般过去时通常为主语+动词-ed(不规则变化除外):“他们走了。”现在进行时的公式是主语+am/is/are + 动词-ing:“我正在阅读。”现在完成时使用主语+ have/has + 过去分词:“她已经完成了。”每个时态都有清晰的助动词+动词模式;记住这些模式,你就能始终正确地构成时态。

4. Subject-Verb Agreement | 主谓一致规则

The formula ‘singular subject takes singular verb; plural subject takes plural verb’ sounds simple, but distractions can break it. Watch out for phrases between the subject and verb: ‘The box of chocolates is on the table,’ not ‘are’. When subjects are joined by ‘and’, use a plural verb: ‘Tom and Jerry are friends.’ With ‘either…or’, the verb agrees with the nearer subject: ‘Either the teacher or the students have arrived.’ Treat collective nouns (team, family) as singular when the group acts as one.

“单数主语搭配单数动词;复数主语搭配复数动词”这条公式听起来简单,但干扰成分常常破坏它。留神主语和动词之间的插入短语:“那盒巧克力在桌子上”,是“is”不是“are”。当主语由“and”连接时,使用复数动词:“汤姆和杰瑞是朋友。”对于“either…or”结构,动词与最靠近的主语一致:“要么老师要么学生们已经到了。”当集体名词(团队、家庭)作为一个整体行动时,将其视为单数。

5. Pronoun Rules | 代词规则

Pronouns replace nouns, but they must follow precise formulas. A pronoun must agree in number and gender with its antecedent: ‘Every student must bring his or her own pen.’ Use ‘they’ as a singular pronoun for a non-gendered individual when appropriate. Object pronouns come after verbs or prepositions: ‘Give it to him.’ Possessive pronouns stand alone (mine, yours) while possessive adjectives need a noun (my book). Keep pronoun reference clear; if there are two possible antecedents, rewrite the sentence.

代词用来代替名词,但必须遵循精确的公式。代词要在数和性上与先行词一致:“每个学生都必须带上他或她自己的笔。”在合适的语境下可用“they”作为单数中性代词。宾格代词置于动词或介词之后:“把它给他。”物主代词可以单独使用(mine, yours),而物主形容词则需要名词(my book)。保持代词的指代清晰;如果可能有两个先行词,就要重写句子。

6. Paragraph Structure (PEEL) | 段落结构公式(PEEL)

A well-organised paragraph follows the PEEL formula: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. State your Point as a clear topic sentence. Provide Evidence – a quotation, fact or example. Offer an Explanation that analyses the evidence and shows how it supports your point. End with a Link back to the overall question or forward to the next paragraph. This formula works in essays, reports and persuasive writing across the KS3 curriculum.

结构良好的段落遵循PEEL公式:观点(Point)、证据(Evidence)、解释(Explanation)、连接(Link)。用一句清晰的主题句陈述你的观点。提供证据——一段引文、事实或例子。给出解释,分析证据并说明它如何支撑你的观点。最后以连接句结束,或回扣整体问题,或过渡到下一段。这个公式适用于KS3课程中的论述文、报告和说服性写作。

7. Figurative Language Devices | 修辞手法公式

Figurative language follows predictable formulas. A simile compares using ‘like’ or ‘as’: ‘Her smile was like sunshine.’ A metaphor directly states one thing is another: ‘The classroom was a zoo.’ Personification gives human qualities to objects: ‘The wind whispered.’ Onomatopoeia uses words that imitate sounds: ‘buzz, hiss.’ Hyperbole is deliberate exaggeration. Each device creates a specific effect – similes make descriptions relatable; metaphors create strong images. When analysing, identify the device, quote it and explain the effect.

修辞手法遵循可预见的公式。明喻用“like”或“as”进行比较:“她的微笑就像阳光。”暗喻则直接说一物是另一物:“教室是个动物园。”拟人赋予物体人的特质:“风在低语。”拟声词使用模仿声音的词语:“buzz, hiss。”夸张是有意的夸大。每一种修辞都能产生特定的效果——明喻让描述易于理解;暗喻营造强烈的意象。分析时,先识别修辞手法,再引用原文,最后解释效果。

8. Spelling Rules | 拼写公式

English spelling may seem chaotic, but many words obey formulas. The classic ‘i before e except after c’ rule helps with words like ‘believe’ and ‘receive’ (but watch for exceptions such as ‘weird’). When adding suffixes, drop a final silent ‘e’ before a vowel suffix (hope → hoping) but keep it before a consonant suffix (hope → hopeful). Double the final consonant after a short vowel in one-syllable words when adding -ing or -ed: ‘run → running’. For plural nouns, most simply add -s, but words ending in -s, -x, -sh, -ch, -z require -es: ‘boxes, wishes’.

9. Connectives and Transitions | 连接词公式

Connectives act as logical glue. Use chronological formulas like ‘firstly, next, then, finally’ for instructions or narratives. For cause and effect, plug in ‘because, therefore, consequently, as a result’. To contrast, use ‘however, on the other hand, although, whereas’. To add information, use ‘furthermore, moreover, in addition’. Each connective has a place; misplacing them upsets coherence. A simple test: read the sentence aloud and check if the transition signals the right relationship between ideas.

连接词起逻辑粘合剂的作用。在说明文或叙事中,使用“firstly, next, then, finally”这类时间顺序公式。表达因果关系时,插入“because, therefore, consequently, as a result”。进行对比时使用“however, on the other hand, although, whereas”。补充信息则用“furthermore, moreover, in addition”。每个连接词都有其合适的位置;用错位置会破坏连贯性。有个简单的检验方法:大声朗读句子,检查过渡词是否准确标示出观点之间的关系。

10. Formal vs Informal Register | 正式与非正式语体公式

Register is the formula you select according to audience and purpose. Formal English avoids contractions (use ‘do not’ instead of ‘don’t’) and slang. It uses modal verbs like ‘could, would, may’ for politeness and third-person constructions: ‘One might argue…’ Informal English is conversational: contractions, everyday vocabulary, and direct questions are common. In KS3 writing, check the task: a letter of complaint demands formal register; a diary entry or friendly email can be informal. Mixing the two without purpose weakens your tone.

语体是你根据读者和写作目的选择的公式。正式英语避免使用缩略式(用“do not”而非“don’t”)和俚语。它使用“could, would, may”等情态动词表示礼貌,并常采用第三人称结构:“人们或许会认为……”非正式英语适合日常对话:缩略式、日常词汇和直接问句都很常见。在KS3写作中,审视题目要求:投诉信需要使用正式语体;日记或给朋友的电子邮件则可以是非正式的。无目的地混用两种语体会削弱语气。

11. Introduction and Thesis Formulas | 引言与论点公式

A strong introduction often follows a three-part formula: Hook, Background and Thesis. Start with a hook – an interesting fact, question or quotation to engage the reader. Provide one or two sentences of background information to set the context. End with a clear thesis statement that outlines your main argument or purpose. For example, in an essay about school uniform, you might write: ‘Every morning students groan as they zip up the same grey jumper. (Hook) Uniforms have been a part of school life for centuries. (Background) However, they stifle individuality and should be replaced with a dress code that allows self-expression. (Thesis)’ This formula gives your writing immediate direction.

When answering comprehension questions, use the PEE formula: Point, Evidence, Explanation. Make your Point by directly answering the question. Support it with Evidence – a short quotation or precise reference from the text. Then Explain what the evidence shows, focusing on the writer’s choices and their effects on the reader. An expanded version, PETER, adds Technique and Reader: ‘The writer uses a simile (Technique) when she says “as cold as ice” (Evidence). This suggests the character’s emotional distance, making the reader feel sympathy (Reader).’ Practising these frameworks will help you write focused, high-mark answers.
