1. Research Methods and Ethical Considerations |
One of the foundational topics in any psychology course is how psychologists design and conduct investigations. A classic high-frequency question requires you to identify the independent variable (IV) and the dependent variable (DV). The IV is the factor manipulated by the researcher, while the DV is the factor measured to see if it changes. A common mistake is to state that the DV is what stays the same, confusing it with the control variable. Remember: the DV is the outcome you record, such as the number of words recalled in a memory experiment. Control variables are the things you keep constant, like room temperature, to ensure a fair test.
Ethical guidelines also feature prominently. Students often fail to distinguish between anonymity and confidentiality. Anonymity means the participant’s identity is never known to the researcher, whereas confidentiality means the researcher knows the identity but promises not to disclose it. In constructed-response questions, always link the ethical issue to the specific remedy: for protection from harm, you could mention debriefing participants and allowing them to withdraw their data.
2. Memory Models and Forgetting |
The multi-store model of memory (Atkinson and Shiffrin) is a favourite exam topic. It describes three separate stores: sensory register, short-term memory (STM), and long-term memory (LTM). A high-frequency error occurs when students claim that information enters STM directly from the environment. Always correct this by noting that information must first pass through the sensory register, where it is held very briefly. Only when we pay attention does it move to STM. In addition, the limited capacity of STM is often tested: Miller’s magic number 7±2 chunks is a must-know figure.
Concerning forgetting, interference theory and retrieval failure are often mixed up. Proactive interference is when old learning disrupts new learning; retroactive interference is when new learning disrupts old learning. A typical exam pitfall is to write that “proactive means future”, but you should think of it as ‘prior to’. Always provide an example, such as learning a new phone number (new) after knowing an old one (old) causing confusion when trying to recall the new number—that is proactive interference.
3. Attachment and Social Development |
Attachment theory, especially the work of Bowlby and Ainsworth’s Strange Situation, appears regularly. A common mistake is to claim that attachment is merely about the child being fed. Bowlby argued for the importance of emotional care and proposed the concept of monotropy—the innate tendency to attach primarily to one caregiver figure. The Strange Situation identified attachment types: secure, insecure-avoidant, and insecure-resistant. Students often mislabel an avoidant child as one who cries a lot. Remember, an insecure-avoidant child shows little distress when the caregiver leaves and avoids them upon return.
Another frequent pitfall is confusion between privation and deprivation. Deprivation means the loss of an existing attachment, whereas privation means never having formed an attachment in the first place. When analyzing case studies like Genie, students should note that privation can have more severe and lasting effects. This distinction is a classic high-mark discriminator in short-answer questions.
4. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |
Conformity (Asch) and obedience (Milgram) are the twin pillars of social influence. A highly typical error is to state that conformity only occurs in a group of strangers. In fact, conformity is often stronger when the group consists of friends or people we identify with. Another mistake is failing to separate informational social influence (looking to others because you believe they are correct) from normative social influence (conforming to fit in and avoid rejection). Examiners like to ask which type of influence leads to a lasting change in private belief—that would be informational influence.
Regarding obedience, the agentic state theory is often misunderstood. Students sometimes write that a person in the agentic state feels more responsible. The correct interpretation is the opposite: in the agentic state, an individual acts as an agent for another’s will and shifts responsibility to the authority figure, leading to reduced personal responsibility. Always link this to Milgram’s experiment when explaining why participants continued delivering shocks.
5. Perception and Illusions |
Visual illusions are a vibrant area where students often lose marks by confusing illusion types. The Ponzo illusion, Müller-Lyer illusion, and the Ames room all exploit depth cues, but the mechanism differs. A frequent wrong answer: claiming that the Müller-Lyer illusion occurs because of retinal disparity. The best explanation relies on size constancy and misinterpreted depth cues. The lines with outgoing ‘fins’ look like inside corners of a room and are perceived as further away, so we see the line as longer.
Gregory’s constructivist theory and Gibson’s direct theory of perception are frequently compared. A classic mistake is to say Gibson completely denied past experience. Gibson did emphasise direct perception, but he acknowledged that we learn to differentiate stimuli. A sharp answer will note that Gibson argued the environment provides sufficient information (affordances), whereas Gregory stressed that perception is a hypothesis testing process influenced by expectations. High-frequency error: labelling top-down processing as purely sensory. Always check: top-down is knowledge-driven; bottom-up is data-driven.
6. Brain and Behaviour: The Role of Neurotransmission |
For KS3 level, the biological bases of behaviour are often introduced through the action of neurotransmitters. A persistent mistake is to describe the synapse as a physical connection between neurons. You must stress that neurons communicate via a tiny gap, the synaptic cleft, and that neurotransmitters cross this cleft. Another high-frequency confusion point: stating that dopamine is always excitatory. In reality, a neurotransmitter’s effect depends on the receptor; dopamine can be both inhibitory and excitatory, depending on the pathway.
The classic case study of Phineas Gage is used to illustrate the role of the frontal lobe in personality and executive functions. Students often write that Gage became permanently more intelligent after the accident. The correct note is that his intellectual abilities were largely intact, but his personality, social behaviour, and impulsivity changed profoundly. Also, when linking brain areas to function, avoid overgeneralisation: the amygdala is indeed vital for fear processing, but it is also involved in other emotional memories.
7. Cognitive Development: Piaget’s Stages |
Piaget’s stage theory remains a frequent assessment target. The four stages—sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational—must be known with their approximate age ranges. A very common error is to say that children in the concrete operational stage cannot understand conservation. In truth, conservation is one of the hallmark acquisitions of the concrete operational stage. The inability to conserve typifies the preoperational stage. Also, the term ‘egocentrism’ in the preoperational stage does not mean selfishness; it means the child can only see the world from their own viewpoint, as shown by the three mountains task.
Students also stumble on the concept of object permanence. They might incorrectly state that a child lacks object permanence until age 2. Object permanence typically develops around 8–12 months during the sensorimotor stage. A classic trick is to ask: “A child sees a toy hidden under a blanket and does not search for it. Which stage?” The child is likely still in the sensorimotor stage before mastering object permanence. This illustrates that lack of searching reflects the belief that the object no longer exists.
8. Learning Theories: Classical and Operant Conditioning |
The distinction between classical conditioning (Pavlov) and operant conditioning (Skinner) is a frequent source of lost marks. In classical conditioning, the learner is passive and forms an association between a neutral stimulus and an unconditioned stimulus. The common error is confusing the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) with the conditioned stimulus (CS). The UCS naturally and automatically triggers a response, such as food causing salivation. The CS is originally neutral and only triggers the response after association. In operant conditioning, the learner operates on the environment, and behaviour is shaped by consequences.
Reinforcement terminology can be tricky. Negative reinforcement is often mistaken for punishment. Negative reinforcement increases a behaviour by removing an unpleasant stimulus (e.g., fastening a seatbelt to stop the annoying beep). Punishment decreases a behaviour. A common analytical mistake is to label a scenario where a child is given no TV time after misbehaving as negative reinforcement. That is negative punishment (removing a pleasant stimulus to reduce misbehaviour). Always ask: does the consequence increase or decrease the target behaviour?
9. Psychological Problems: Introduction to Mental Health |
An increasingly examined area at KS3 level is the introduction to mental health, covering topics like phobias and unipolar depression. The behavioural explanation of phobias—the two-process model—states that phobias are acquired by classical conditioning and maintained by operant conditioning (avoidance reduces anxiety, thus negatively reinforcing the phobia). A frequent error is to claim that the phobia is maintained simply because the person is scared. The maintenance factor is the avoidance behaviour that prevents disconfirmation of the fear.
For depression, students confuse cognitive distortions. Beck’s negative triad involves negative views of the self, the world, and the future. A typical misstatement is to say that the negative triad includes negative views of friends and family. While those can be present, the triad specifically refers to self, world, and future. Also, Ellis’s ABC model (Activating event, Belief, Consequence) is often presented incorrectly: the belief, not the event itself, causes the emotional consequence. Many students write that the activating event directly causes the consequence, missing the cognitive mediation.
10. Data Handling and Graphical Analysis in Psychology |
Even at KS3, you will need to interpret data and graphs. A common blunder is choosing the wrong measure of central tendency. If the data set contains an outlier (an extremely high or low score), the median is a better average than the mean, because the mean is distorted by outliers. A typical exam question might give a set of scores like 4, 5, 6, 7, 35, and ask which measure of central tendency is most appropriate. Students who pick the mean without checking for outliers lose a straightforward mark. The calculation of the range as a measure of dispersion is also often muddled: range = highest value – lowest value, but some students add them instead.
Graph skills include labelling axes and choosing the correct graph type. For displaying the difference in mean scores between two conditions, a bar chart is suitable. A line graph is used for showing changes over time. A common error is drawing a line graph when the x-axis contains categorical, independent groups. Moreover, when asked to ‘describe the trend’, students often miss starting with an overall statement before giving specific data points. Examiners look for statements like ‘Overall, as the IV increases, the DV decreases, except between condition 3 and 4 where it plateaus.’ This descriptive skill is highly rewarded.
