1. Total Revenue | 总收入
Total revenue is the money a business receives from selling goods or services.
Total Revenue = Selling Price per Unit × Quantity Sold
Selling price per unit is the amount charged for one item.
Quantity sold is the number of units sold in a given period.
Example: If a shop sells 200 T‑shirts at £15 each, total revenue = £15 × 200 = £3,000.
2. Total Costs | 总成本
Total costs are all expenses a business incurs to produce and sell its products.
Total Costs = Fixed Costs + Total Variable Costs
Fixed costs do not change with output (e.g., rent, salaries).
Total variable costs = Variable Cost per Unit × Quantity.
Variable cost per unit stays the same for each unit (e.g., raw materials).
Example: Fixed costs are £1,000, variable cost per unit is £2, and 300 units are made. Total costs = £1,000 + (£2 × 300) = £1,600.
3. Profit | 利润
Profit measures how much money a business keeps after covering all costs.
Profit = Total Revenue – Total Costs
If total revenue is greater than total costs, the business makes a profit.
If total costs are greater, the business makes a loss.
Example: Revenue = £5,000, total costs = £3,500. Profit = £5,000 – £3,500 = £1,500.
4. Break-even Point |
The break-even point shows how many units a business must sell to cover all costs (profit = £0).
Break-even Point (units) = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per Unit – Variable Cost per Unit)
The bottom part (Selling Price – Variable Cost per Unit) is called contribution per unit.
Example: Fixed costs = £4,000, selling price = £25, variable cost per unit = £15. Break-even = £4,000 ÷ (£25 – £15) = 400 units.
5. Margin of Safety |
Margin of safety shows how much sales can fall before the business reaches break-even.
Margin of Safety = Actual Sales (units) – Break-even Sales (units)
It can also be expressed as a percentage: (Margin of Safety ÷ Actual Sales) × 100.
A higher margin of safety means lower risk of making a loss.
Example: Actual sales = 600 units, break-even = 400 units. Margin of safety = 200 units.
6. Mark-up Pricing |
Mark-up pricing is a method of setting the selling price by adding a percentage to the cost price.
Selling Price = Unit Cost × (1 + Mark-up Percentage)
If the mark-up is 25%, the multiplier is 1.25.
Example: Unit cost = £40, mark-up = 30%. Selling price = £40 × 1.30 = £52.
Alternatively, you can calculate mark-up amount = Unit Cost × Mark-up %, then add to cost.
7. Net Cash Flow |
Net cash flow is the difference between cash inflows and cash outflows over a period.
Net Cash Flow = Total Cash Inflows – Total Cash Outflows
Cash inflows include sales revenue, loans, and investments.
Cash outflows include purchases, wages, rent, and other payments.
Example: Inflows = £8,000, outflows = £6,200. Net cash flow = £8,000 – £6,200 = £1,800.
8. Closing Balance |
The closing balance shows the amount of cash a business has at the end of a month or period.
Closing Balance = Opening Balance + Net Cash Flow
The opening balance is the cash held at the start of the period.
This closing balance becomes the next period’s opening balance.
Example: Opening balance = £500, net cash flow = £1,800. Closing balance = £500 + £1,800 = £2,300.
9. Gross Profit Margin |
Gross profit margin shows the percentage of revenue left after paying direct costs (cost of sales).
Gross Profit Margin = (Gross Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Gross profit = Revenue – Cost of Sales.
Cost of sales includes costs directly linked to making the product, such as raw materials.
Example: Revenue = £10,000, cost of sales = £6,000. Gross profit = £4,000. Margin = (£4,000 ÷ £10,000) × 100 = 40%.
10. Net Profit Margin |
Net profit margin measures the percentage of revenue that becomes net profit after all expenses.
Net Profit Margin = (Net Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Net profit is the profit left after subtracting all costs, including operating expenses and interest.
It is a better overall measure of profitability than gross profit margin.
Example: Revenue = £10,000, total expenses = £8,500. Net profit = £1,500. Net profit margin = (£1,500 ÷ £10,000) × 100 = 15%.
