1. Semiotics Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified | 符号学公式:符号 = 能指 + 所指

At the heart of media analysis lies semiotics, the study of signs. A sign is anything that carries meaning. It is made up of two parts: the signifier (the physical form – a word, image or sound) and the signified (the mental concept it triggers). The formula Sign = Signifier + Signified reminds you that meaning is never just ‘there’; it is constructed by linking a form to an idea. For example, a red rose (signifier) can signify romance or love (signified) in a perfume advert.

媒体分析的核心是符号学,即研究符号的学问。符号是任何承载意义的事物,由两部分组成:能指(物理形式,如词语、图像或声音)和所指(它引发的心理概念)。公式“符号 = 能指 + 所指”提醒我们,意义从来不是“天然”存在的,而是通过将形式与概念联系起来构建的。例如,在香水广告中,一朵红玫瑰(能指)可以代表浪漫或爱情(所指)。

Component Definition
Signifier (能指) The physical form you see, hear or touch (e.g., a word on a page, a musical note)
Signified (所指) The mental concept or idea the form brings to mind (e.g., danger, luxury)
Sign (符号) The whole that results from the union of signifier and signified

Always ask: what is the signifier, what does it signify, and how is that meaning culturally learned?

一定要问:能指是什么?它指向什么意义?这种意义又是如何通过文化习得的?

2. Todorov’s Narrative Theorem: Equilibrium → Disruption → New Equilibrium | 托多罗夫叙事定理:均衡 → 破坏 → 新均衡

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most stories follow a simple three-step pattern. It begins with a state of balance or equilibrium. This is then broken by a disruption (a problem or conflict). The story moves through a period of struggle until a new equilibrium is restored – often changed by the events. Use this formula to map the narrative structure of any film or TV episode: Equilibrium → Disruption → New Equilibrium. A superhero film, for instance, starts with the hero in everyday life (equilibrium), a villain appears (disruption), and after a final battle a safer world emerges (new equilibrium).

Equilibrium (calm) → Disruption (chaos) → Recognition → Attempt to repair → New Equilibrium (changed state)

3. Propp’s Character Functions Theorem | 普罗普角色功能定理

Vladimir Propp studied Russian folk tales and found that despite surface differences, characters always perform one of seven fixed functions. Think of these as character ‘types’ or mathematical variables. The formula is: Narrative = Hero + Villain + Donor + Helper + Princess (or prize) + Dispatcher + False Hero. Not every story uses all seven, but recognising these roles – and how they drive the plot – will strengthen your character analysis instantly.

弗拉基米尔·普罗普研究了俄罗斯民间故事后发现,尽管表面情节各异,但角色总是履行七种固定功能中的一种或几种。你可以把这些角色类型看作数学变量。这个公式是:叙事 = 英雄 + 反派 + 捐赠者 + 帮手 + 公主(或奖赏) + 派遣者 + 假英雄。并非每个故事都用全七种,但认出这些角色以及他们如何推动情节,能立刻提升你的角色分析水平。

Function (功能) Typical Role
Hero (英雄) Seeks something, struggles against the villain
Villain (反派) Opposes the hero, creates the disruption
Donor (捐赠者) Prepares the hero or gives a magical object
Helper (帮手) Aids the hero on the quest
Princess/Prize (公主/奖赏) The sought-after person or goal; often needs rescuing
Dispatcher (派遣者) Sends the hero on the mission
False Hero (假英雄) Claims credit, tries to deceive

4. Barthes’ Narrative Codes Theorem | 巴特叙事代码定理

Roland Barthes argued that narratives are woven from multiple ‘codes’ that engage the reader or viewer. For KS3, concentrate on the two most powerful ones: the enigma (hermeneutic) code and the action (proairetic) code. The enigma code sets up a question, delays the answer and creates suspense. The action code uses a sequence of events where one action leads logically to the next. You can express this as: Narrative tension = Enigma (Question → Delay → Answer) × Action (Cause → Effect). When analysing any opening scene, identify what enigmas are planted and how action sequences hook the audience.

Enigma Code Example: In a crime drama, the first shot shows a broken window; the question ‘Who did it?’ is raised but not answered until later – that is the enigma engine.

谜题代码示例:在一部刑侦剧中,第一个镜头是一扇破碎的窗户;问题“是谁干的?”被抛出,但尚未回答——这就是谜题引擎在起作用。

5. Uses and Gratifications Formula: Media Use = Needs + Gratification | 使用与满足公式:媒体使用 = 需求 + 满足

This audience theory shifts the question from ‘What do media do to people?’ to ‘What do people do with media?’ The formula reminds us that audiences are active. They select media texts to satisfy specific needs: Information (learning), Personal Identity (reinforcing who we are), Integration and Social Interaction (connecting with others), and Entertainment (escape). Write: Media choice = Information Need + Identity Need + Social Need + Entertainment Need. When you are asked why a target audience might enjoy a particular magazine or podcast, run through these four needs and find evidence in the text.

6. Audience Positioning Theorem: Three Readings | 受众定位定理:三种解读方式

Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model proposes that media producers encode a ‘preferred meaning’, but audiences decode it in different ways. The theorem states: Every text allows a Preferred (or dominant) reading, a Negotiated reading and an Oppositional reading. Preferred = the audience accepts the message fully. Negotiated = the audience broadly accepts but modifies some parts based on personal experience. Oppositional = the audience rejects the intended message entirely. Use this formula to discuss how different viewers might respond to the same music video or news report: Response = Preferred OR Negotiated OR Oppositional.

7. Hypodermic Syringe Theorem | 皮下注射针定理

The hypodermic syringe model (also called the magic bullet theory) is an older but still useful idea. It claims that media injects ideas directly into the passive mind of the audience, causing an immediate and uniform reaction. While we now know audiences are more active, this model helps you analyse moral panics or extreme cases. Think of it as: Media message → Passive receiver → Uniform effect. It is often used to explain why some people worry about violent video games or frightening news.

皮下注射针模型(又称魔弹论)是一个较旧但仍然有用的观点。它声称媒体把观念直接“注射”进受众被动的大脑中,引起即时而一致的反应。虽然我们现在知道受众更加主动,但这个模型能帮你分析道德恐慌或极端案例。你可以记成:媒体信息 → 被动接收者 → 一致的效果。它常被用来解释为什么人们对暴力电子游戏或恐怖新闻感到担忧。

Remember: This model is most appropriate when discussing early media theories or public fears, not for all modern audience behaviour.

记住:该模型最适合讨论早期的媒体理论或公众恐慌,而不是所有的现代受众行为。

8. Representation Formula: Reality → Selection → Construction → Mediation → Representation | 表征公式:现实 → 选择 → 建构 → 中介 → 表征

Media texts do not simply mirror reality; they re-present it. The representation process can be captured in a clear chain: Reality is filtered through Selection (what to include and exclude), then Construction (how to arrange it with camera angles, lighting, language), then Mediation (the platform and its constraints), finally arriving at the Representation on screen or page. In short: Media Representation = Selection + Construction + Mediation. When analysing any character or social group in a media text, trace this chain to explain how a stereotype is built – or challenged.

9. Genre Formula: Repetition + Difference = Audience Appeal | 类型公式:重复 + 差异 = 受众吸引力

Genre is a contract between producer and audience. Audiences recognise familiar conventions (repetition) – such as dark alleys in crime thrillers or laugh tracks in sitcoms – which provide comfort and expectation. But pure repetition becomes boring. Producers therefore introduce subtle differences that create novelty. This can be written as: Genre pleasure = Familiar conventions + Surprising variations. For example, a fantasy film might have the familiar ‘young hero’ and ‘magical object’ but surprise you with a villain who is also a parent. Spotting both the repetition and the difference is key to genre analysis.

10. Visual Language Formula: Shot Type + Angle → Meaning | 视觉语言公式:景别 + 角度 → 含义

Every choice of camera shot and angle carries meaning. A close-up (intimacy, detail), a low-angle shot (power, dominance) and a high-angle shot (vulnerability) are among the most straightforward. Combine them into a decision formula: Visual meaning = Shot size (Extreme Long Shot / Long Shot / Mid Shot / Close-Up / Extreme Close-Up) + Angle (Low / Eye-level / High / Dutch tilt) + Movement (Pan, Tilt, Zoom). When analysing a sequence, briefly list the dominant shot types and angles, then ask what they suggest about relationships, power and mood.

每个镜头景别和角度的选择都承载着含义。特写(亲密、细节)、仰拍(力量、主导)和俯拍(脆弱)是最直接的一些例子。把它们组合成一个决策公式:视觉含义 = 景别(大远景/远景/中景/特写/大特写) + 角度(低角度/平视/高角度/斜角) + 运动(摇镜、俯仰、变焦)。分析一个片段时,简要列出主要的景别和角度,然后问自己:它们在暗示什么关于角色关系、权力和情绪的信息?

Shot / Angle Common Meaning
Close-Up Emotion, intimacy, importance of an object
Low Angle Power, authority, threat
High Angle Vulnerability, weakness, being looked down on
Dutch Tilt Unease, disorientation, psychological tension

11. Mise-en-Scène Equation: Setting + Lighting + Costume + Props + Colour = Atmosphere | 场面调度方程:场景 + 灯光 + 服装 + 道具 + 色彩 = 氛围

Mise-en-Scène (a French term meaning ‘placed in the scene’) is everything you can see within the frame. The equation Atmosphere = Setting + Lighting + Costume + Props + Colour enables you to systematically analyse how visual elements create meaning. For instance, low-key lighting with harsh shadows (lighting) combined with a cluttered, urban alley (setting) and worn-out clothes (costume) instantly constructs a mood of danger and poverty. Always link each element to a specific represented idea, not just describe it.

场面调度(源自法语,意为“置于场景中”)是指画面内可见的一切。方程“氛围 = 场景 + 灯光 + 服装 + 道具 + 色彩”让你能够系统地分析视觉元素如何创造意义。例如,带有强烈阴影的暗调灯光(灯光),加上混乱的都市巷弄(场景)和破旧的衣服(服装),瞬间构建出一种危险和贫穷的情绪。要始终将每个元素与具体的表征观念联系起来,而不仅仅是描述它。

12. Media Language Quick-Theorem: Denotation + Connotation → Myth | 媒体语言速记定理:外延 + 内涵 → 神话

This theorem, inspired by Barthes, takes you from simple description to deep analysis. Denotation is the literal, obvious meaning (a photo of a lion). Connotation is the associated, cultural meaning (the lion suggests strength, wildness, royalty). When a connotation becomes so widely accepted that it feels ‘natural’, it turns into a myth – for example, the myth that buying a certain car equals success. Use the ladder: Denotation → Connotation → Myth. Answer exam questions by starting with ‘At a denotative level…’ then ‘On a connotative level…’ and finally ‘This reinforces the myth that…’

这个受巴特启发的定理,带你从简单描述走向深度分析。外延是字面的、明显的意义(一张狮子的照片)。内涵是联想的、文化层面的意义(狮子暗示力量、野性、王权)。当一个内涵被广泛接受,以至于感觉“自然”时,它就变成了神话——例如,购买某款汽车等于成功的神话。使用这个阶梯:外延 → 内涵 → 神话。回答考题时,从“在外延层面……”开始,然后“在内涵层面……”,最后“这强化了……的神话”。
