1. Narrative Theories |

Todorov’s narrative equilibrium model defines a classic structure where a story moves from an initial state of balance through disruption and recognition of that disruption, leading to an attempt to repair and eventually a new or restored equilibrium. This linear formula helps deconstruct how media narratives manage conflict and resolution.

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equilibrium

Propp identified seven character spheres (roles) that recur across folk tales and, by extension, many media texts. These archetypes can be used to analyse character functions in advertising, film and TV drama.

  • Villain (struggles against the hero) /
  • Donor (provides a magical object) /
  • Helper (aids the hero) /
  • Princess (a sought-for person, often reward) /
  • Dispatcher (sends the hero on the quest) /
  • Hero (seeks something, reacts to donor) /
  • False Hero (usurps the hero’s success) /

Levi-Strauss argued that narratives are structured around binary oppositions. Meaning is produced through conflict between opposing concepts, such as good versus evil or nature versus culture. This structuralist approach reveals deep cultural values embedded in media stories.

Binary Opposition: Concept A ←→ Concept B (e.g. Rich ←→ Poor, Order ←→ Chaos)

2. Genre Theory |

Steve Neale sees genres not as fixed sets of rules but as ongoing processes of repetition and variation. A genre’s conventions are established through reiteration, but difference is essential to prevent the formula becoming stale. Media products simultaneously confirm and play with audience expectations.

Genre = Repetition (Convention) + Variation (Difference)

Genres also operate through intertextuality and economic imperatives: studios use familiar genre markers to minimise risk, yet marketing requires the ‘new’ to attract audiences. Exam questions often ask you to apply Neale’s theorem to a given media text, appreciating how it both conforms to and subverts the genre template.

3. Semiotics and Myth |

Barthes’ semiotic framework distinguishes between denotation (literal meaning of a sign) and connotation (the associations and cultural meanings attached). Together they form the sign, comprising signifier (form) and signified (concept). This theorem is the bedrock of media language analysis.

Sign = Signifier (Image/Word) + Signified (Mental Concept)

Denotation → Connotation → Myth (Ideological Layer)

Barthes’ theory of myth reveals how media naturalise ideology: repeated connotative associations transform a culturally constructed message into something that appears universal and common sense. Anchoring (via captions or voiceover) fixes preferred meanings among polysemic possibilities.

4. Representation Theories |

Stuart Hall’s representation theory asserts that meaning is not inherent but constructed through language and discourse. Media represent the world in ways that reflect and shape societal power relations. Hall’s encoding/decoding model is central: producers encode a preferred meaning, but audiences decode it in dominant, negotiated or oppositional ways.

Encoding (Institution/Ideology) → Text → Decoding (Dominant / Negotiated / Oppositional)

Richard Dyer’s typology of stereotypes helps deconstruct representational practices. Stereotypes reduce complex individuals to a few traits, construct an ‘other’, and reinforce boundaries of normality. Applying Dyer’s theorem allows critical discussion of how media may marginalise particular groups.

  • Stereotypes as ordering process (simplify, exaggerate) /
  • Stereotypes as a short-cut to meaning /
  • Stereotypes as reference to the ‘real world’ / 对“现实世界”的指涉
  • Stereotypes as expressions of social values /

5. Audience Theories |

Uses and Gratifications theory, advanced by Blumler and Katz, shifts focus from what media do to people to what people do with media. Audiences are active, selecting texts to meet needs. McQuail’s four categories provide a memorable mnemonic for analysis.

U&G = Surveillance (Information) + Personal Identity + Personal Relationships + Diversion (Entertainment)

Gerbner’s cultivation theory posits that heavy television viewing cultivates a shared, distorted perception of reality closer to the TV world than the actual world. The mean world syndrome formula links high exposure to a fearful, mistrusting outlook.

Heavy TV Viewing × Repetition of Violent/Threatening Content → Mean World Syndrome

Stuart Hall’s reception model (also noted under representation) is vital for audience-centred analysis, demonstrating that media power is not absolute. The same text can generate radically different readings based on the audience’s social and cultural context. Jenkins’ concept of participatory culture further erodes the passive audience paradigm, highlighting fans as producers and reshapers of media content.

6. Media Industry Theories |

Curran and Seaton argue that the media industry is shaped by the concentration of ownership and the pursuit of profit. This limits diversity and plurality, as large conglomerates prioritise commercially safe content. Their theorem challenges the notion of a free market producing a genuine marketplace of ideas.

Concentration of Ownership → Conflict of Interest → Limited Plurality & Risk-Averse Content

Hesmondhalgh’s cultural industries framework explains how media companies manage risk through strategies like formatting, star power, and serialisation. Despite the vast number of media products, structural inequalities persist, and the ‘cultural industry’ continually recycles successful formulas to maximise profit.

Risk Management → Formatting + Star System + Serialisation → Reinforcing Oligopoly

Livingstone and Lunt’s work on media regulation addresses the tension between serving citizens’ interests and satisfying consumer demands. The transition to convergent media has complicated public service obligations and raised questions about who regulates digital platforms effectively.

7. Postmodernism and Hyperreality |

Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra and hyperreality proposes that media can create copies without originals, where signs refer only to other signs. Disneyland, reality TV, and social media profiles exemplify hyperreal worlds that blur the boundary between authentic reality and simulation. The formula of the simulacrum is the map that precedes the territory.

Simulacrum: Sign without Referent → Hyperreality (More Real than Real)

Jameson identifies pastiche and historical amnesia as key features of postmodern media. Media texts strip history of its depth, presenting a surface-level play of nostalgic styles empty of original meaning. The result is a ‘perpetual present’ that rejects metanarratives and fixed truth.

8. Feminism and Media |

Van Zoonen’s feminist media theory argues that gender is performed and constructed through media discourse, not simply reflected. Media representations reinforce patriarchal norms, but audiences can negotiate these constructions. Her approach uses the concept of the body as a site of cultural struggle.

Gender = Performance × (Media Discourse + Institutional Context) → (Re)Construction of Femininity/Masculinity

bell hooks introduces intersectionality, insisting that race, class and gender cannot be analysed in isolation. Media representations must be understood at the intersections, where the experience of a black woman, for example, is shaped by simultaneous, interlocking systems of oppression. This theorem challenges simplistic feminist critiques that ignore racial or class dimensions.

9. Power and Ideology |

Gramsci’s concept of hegemony explains how dominant groups maintain power not just through force but through ideological leadership, securing the consent of the subordinate. Media play a crucial role in manufacturing this consent, normalising values that serve elite interests. Counter-hegemonic media can challenge this consensus.

Hegemony = Coercion + Consent (Mediated by Institutions like Media)

Althusser’s notion of Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) resonates in media studies: media function as an ISA, interpellating individuals as subjects who accept dominant ideologies as their own. The ‘media effects’ tradition, including the hypodermic syringe model (often critiqued), links direct messaging to passive audience influence, though more nuanced models now dominate.

10. Globalisation and Cultural Exchange |

Cultural imperialism theory, associated with Herbert Schiller, describes how Western (particularly American) media flows overwhelmingly from centre to periphery, imposing dominant capitalist values and threatening local cultures. The thesis is contested by evidence of active local reception and hybridisation.

One-Way Flow (West → Rest) → Cultural Homogenisation / Cultural Hybridity

Modern theorists emphasise globalisation as a complex, multi-directional process. The concept of ‘glocalisation’ captures how global formats are adapted for local tastes. The rise of networks like Al Jazeera and Korean popular culture exports (Hallyu) demonstrates counter-flows that complicate simple centre-periphery formulas.

12. Applying the Theorems |

In examination answers, always move beyond simple identification of a theory. Use these formulae as analytical tools: show how a text confirms or challenges a theoretical proposition, consider limitations of the theorem, and support your argument with precise textual evidence. The formula is a springboard, not a straightjacket.
