Conditional Probability |

📚 Conditional Probability |

Conditional probability is a measure of the likelihood of an event occurring given that another event has already occurred or is known to be true. It is a fundamental concept in A-Level Edexcel Statistics, forming the basis for understanding dependencies between events, tree diagrams, and independent trials.

1. Definition and Notation |

The conditional probability of event A given event B is written as P(A | B). The vertical bar ‘|’ is read as ‘given’. This notation indicates that we are only considering outcomes where event B occurs, and then finding the probability that A also occurs within that reduced sample space.

For example, P(rain | cloudy) represents the probability that it rains given that it is cloudy. The condition ‘cloudy’ restricts the sample space to only cloudy days.

例如,P(rain | cloudy) 表示在阴天的情况下下雨的概率。

2. The Core Formula |

The conditional probability is calculated using the formula:

P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) / P(B), provided P(B) > 0

where P(A ∩ B) is the probability that both events A and B occur (the intersection), and P(B) is the probability that event B occurs. The formula cannot be applied if P(B) = 0, because division by zero is undefined.

其中 P(A ∩ B) 是事件 A 和 B 同时发生的概率(交集),P(B) 是事件 B 发生的概率。

This formula is derived from the idea of restricting the sample space to B and then assessing the proportion of B that also includes A. It can be rearranged to give the multiplication rule: P(A ∩ B) = P(A | B) × P(B).

P(A ∩ B) = P(A | B) × P(B)。

3. Sample Space Reduction |

Understanding conditional probability as a reduction of the sample space is crucial. If we know that B has occurred, we ignore all outcomes outside B. The new sample space is B, and P(A | B) is the proportion of B that lies within A.

新的样本空间是 B,P(A | B) 就是 B 中落在 A 内的比例。

For example, a bag contains 5 red and 3 blue balls. If one ball is drawn and we are told it is red (event B), then the probability that it is also marked with a star (event A) is the number of red starred balls divided by 5. This is exactly P(A ∩ B) / P(B) = (number of red starred / total) / (5/8) = (red starred)/5.

4. Venn Diagrams and Conditional Probability |

Venn diagrams provide a visual way to interpret conditional probability. If the diagram shows sets A and B, then P(A | B) corresponds to the probability of being in the intersection region relative to the entirety of set B.

When given a Venn diagram with frequencies or probabilities, you can directly read P(A | B) as (number in A∩B) / (total number in B). This visual approach helps prevent errors such as mixing up P(A | B) with P(B | A).

这种直观方法有助于避免混淆 P(A | B) 与 P(B | A)。

For instance, if a survey of students shows 30 study Maths (M), 20 study Physics (P), and 10 study both. Then P(P | M) = 10/30 = 1/3, whereas P(M | P) = 10/20 = 1/2. They are generally different.

5. Tree Diagrams and Conditional Probabilities |

Tree diagrams are an essential tool in handling sequential events where conditional probabilities are given. On a tree, the probabilities on the second set of branches are conditional probabilities, given the outcome of the first event.

When constructing a tree, always check that the sum of probabilities on branches from the same node equals 1. To find the probability of an entire path, multiply along the branches: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | A).

P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | A)。

For example, a box contains 4 red and 6 blue counters. Two counters are drawn without replacement. The probability that the second is red given the first was blue is P(2nd red | 1st blue) = 4/9. The tree will have conditional probabilities that change because of non-replacement.

6. The Multiplication Rule |

The multiplication rule is a direct rearrangement of the conditional probability formula: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | A) = P(B) × P(A | B). It allows us to compute joint probabilities from marginal and conditional probabilities.

P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | A) = P(B) × P(A | B)。

This rule is particularly useful in multi-stage experiments, such as drawing cards without replacement, where the probability of the second event depends on the first. It is also the foundation for solving problems involving ‘at least one’ or combined events.

7. Independence Test Using Conditional Probability |

Two events A and B are independent if the occurrence of one does not affect the probability of the other. In terms of conditional probability, this means:

P(A | B) = P(A) and P(B | A) = P(B)

If either condition holds (and both hold if P(A), P(B) > 0), the events are independent. The equivalent test using multiplication is P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B).

P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B)。

In Edexcel A-Level questions, you are often asked to determine whether events are independent by comparing P(A ∩ B) with P(A)×P(B) or by checking conditional probabilities.

For example, if P(R) = 0.5, P(S) = 0.4, and P(R ∩ S) = 0.2, then since 0.5×0.4 = 0.2, the events are independent. Consequently, P(R | S) = 0.2/0.4 = 0.5 = P(R).

例如,若 P(R)=0.5,P(S)=0.4,且 P(R ∩ S)=0.
