A well-structured results table is the first step in recording quantitative data. It must have a clear title, column headings that include the variable and its unit (e.g., ‘Time (s)’ or ‘Concentration of glucose (mmol dm⁻³)’), and consistent decimal places. Never put units in the body of the table; the unit belongs in the heading.

The precision of a measurement is determined by the instrument used. For a ruler marked in mm, lengths should be recorded to the nearest 0.5 mm or 1 mm, e.g., 12.3 cm, not 12 cm. A stopwatch reading to 0.01 s should be recorded as 15.23 s, not 15 s. The number of significant figures should reflect the precision of the measuring device.
