📚 Vectors and Scalars |

In physics, every measurable quantity can be classified either as a scalar or a vector. This classification is fundamental because it determines how quantities combine, how they are represented in equations, and how they behave under coordinate transformations. Scalars are completely described by a magnitude alone, whereas vectors require both magnitude and direction. Mastering the distinction between vectors and scalars is an essential step for understanding topics ranging from kinematics and forces to fields and wave motion.

1. Definitions and Key Differences |

A scalar quantity is one that has only magnitude (size) and a unit. No directional information is associated with it. Common scalars include mass, time, temperature, energy, and distance. A vector quantity, on the other hand, possesses both magnitude and direction. Displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, and momentum are all vector quantities. The directional nature of vectors means they cannot be added, subtracted, or multiplied in the same naive way as scalars; vector algebra must be used.

A quick way to test whether a quantity is a vector is to ask: does reversing its direction change the physical situation? If yes, it is a vector. For instance, applying a force of 10 N eastward is physically different from applying 10 N westward, so force is a vector. Meanwhile, having a mass of 10 kg does not depend on direction — mass is a scalar.

2. Common Scalars and Vectors in Physics |

The table below lists some of the most frequently encountered scalars and vectors in the IB Physics syllabus, along with their typical units.

Scalar Symbol & Unit Vector Symbol & Unit
Distance d (m) Displacement s (m)
Speed v (m s⁻¹) Velocity v (m s⁻¹)
Mass m (kg) Weight (Force) W (N)
Time t (s) Acceleration a (m s⁻²)
Energy E (J) Momentum p (kg m s⁻¹)
Temperature T (K) Electric field E (N C⁻¹)

Note that distance and speed are the scalar counterparts of displacement and velocity. Distance measures the total length of a path travelled, ignoring direction, whereas displacement measures the straight-line change in position with a specified direction. Speed is the rate at which distance is covered, while velocity is the rate of change of displacement.

3. Representing Vectors Graphically |

A vector is typically drawn as an arrow. The length of the arrow, drawn to a chosen scale, represents the magnitude of the vector, and the arrowhead indicates its direction. For example, a displacement of 5.0 km due east can be represented by an arrow 5.0 cm long pointing to the right, using a scale of 1 cm : 1 km. The starting point is called the tail and the tip is the head.

In printed text, vectors are often denoted by boldface type, such as F for force, or by an arrow above the symbol, F⃗. In handwriting, a vector is usually written with an arrow above the letter or underlined wavy line.

4. Addition of Vectors: Triangle Law |

When two vectors are added, both their magnitudes and directions must be taken into account. The triangle law of vector addition states that if two vectors are represented by two sides of a triangle taken in order, then their resultant (the sum) is given by the closing side of the triangle taken in the opposite order. Suppose you wish to add vector A and vector B. Draw A as an arrow to scale. From the head of A, draw B with the same scale. The resultant R = A + B is the arrow drawn from the tail of A to the head of B.

This graphical method is especially useful when vectors are not perpendicular. The magnitude and direction of the resultant can be measured directly from the scale drawing, or calculated using trigonometry when the angle between the vectors is known.

5. Parallelogram Law of Vector Addition |

An alternative graphical method for adding two vectors is the parallelogram law. To add A and B, place the tails of both vectors at the same point. Complete a parallelogram using A and B as adjacent sides. The diagonal of the parallelogram that starts from the common tail represents the resultant R = A + B. The parallelogram law is completely equivalent to the triangle law; shifting one vector to form the triangle simply completes half of the parallelogram.

For two perpendicular vectors, the magnitude of the resultant is found by Pythagoras’ theorem: R = √(A² + B²). The direction θ relative to vector A is given by tan θ = B/A.

合向量相对于 A 的方向角 θ 满足 tan θ = B/A。

6. Vector Subtraction |

Subtracting vector B from vector A is equivalent to adding the negative of B: A − B = A + (−B). The negative of a vector has the same magnitude but points in the exact opposite direction. Graphically, to subtract B from A, you can reverse the direction of B and then add it to A using the triangle or parallelogram method.

向量 A 减去向量 B 等同于加上 B 的负向量:A − B = A + (−B)。

Vector subtraction is central to finding the change in velocity, relative velocity, and the difference between two forces. For instance, the change in velocity Δv = v₂ − v₁ is obtained by reversing v₁ and adding it to v₂.

7. Multiplication of a Vector by a Scalar |

When a vector is multiplied by a positive scalar, its magnitude is multiplied by that scalar, but its direction remains unchanged. For example, F = ma means the acceleration vector a is multiplied by the scalar mass m to yield the force vector F. If the scalar is negative, the direction of the resulting vector reverses. Multiplying a velocity vector v by −2 gives a new vector with twice the magnitude and opposite direction.

Division by a scalar is just multiplication by the reciprocal. Thus v = s/t divides the displacement vector by time, giving the average velocity vector.

8. Resolution of Vectors into Components |

Resolving a vector is the process of splitting it into two perpendicular components, usually along the horizontal (x) and vertical (y) axes. Given a vector V of magnitude V making an angle θ with the x-axis, its components are:

Vx = V cos θ , Vy = V sin θ

Vx = V cos θ , Vy = V sin θ

These component equations are valid only when θ is measured from the positive x-axis. Care must be taken with the signs of the components depending on the quadrant in which the vector lies. Resolving vectors allows us to add any number of vectors algebraically by summing their x- and y-components independently.

9. Adding Vectors by Components |

When multiple vectors act on an object, the analytical method of component addition is both efficient and accurate. The steps are:

  • Resolve each vector into its x- and y-components.
  • Add all x-components to obtain the resultant x-component Rx.
  • Add all y-components to obtain Ry.
  • The magnitude of the resultant is R = √(Rx² + Ry²).
  • The direction is given by θ = tan⁻¹(Ry/Rx), with attention to the quadrant.

This method is the foundation for solving equilibrium problems where the net force is zero, leading to ΣFx = 0 and ΣFy = 0. It is also essential in projectile motion, where the constant acceleration in the y-direction is treated independently from the constant velocity in the x-direction.

10. Magnitude and Direction from Components |

Given the components of a vector, its magnitude is calculated using Pythagoras’ theorem: V = √(Vx² + Vy²). This always yields a positive scalar. The direction angle θ is found from tan θ = Vy / Vx. However, the inverse tangent function on a calculator returns an angle between −90° and +90°, so the quadrant must be determined by inspecting the signs of Vx and Vy. For example, if Vx is negative and Vy is positive, the vector lies in the second quadrant and 180° − |θ₀| should be used.

For three-dimensional vectors, an extra z-component is added, and the magnitude becomes √(Vx² + Vy² + Vz²). IB Physics generally focuses on two-dimensional vectors, but the extension follows the same logic.

11. Unit Vectors |

A unit vector is a vector of magnitude 1 that points in a particular direction. It is often used to specify direction without changing magnitude when multiplying by a scalar. In a Cartesian coordinate system, the standard unit vectors are i (along the x-axis) and j (along the y-axis). Any vector A can be written as A = Ax i + Ay j. The unit vector in the direction of A is û = A / |A|.

在笛卡儿坐标系中,标准单位向量是 i(沿 x 轴)和 j(沿 y 轴)。 A = Ax i + Ay j。在 A 的方向上的单位向量为 û = A / |A|。

Unit vectors simplify the notation of vector addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication. They are also extremely useful in writing the equations of motion in component form, e.g., v = vxi + vyj.

12. Vectors in Physical Applications |

Vectors are indispensable in formulating the laws of mechanics. Newton’s second law is inherently a vector equation: ΣF = ma, linking the vector sum of forces to the acceleration vector an object experiences. In kinematics, displacement s, velocity v, and acceleration a are all vector quantities, and the equations of motion such as v = u + at are vector equations that must be satisfied in each direction independently.

Other examples include momentum p = mv, impulse J = FΔt, and the electric field E = F/q. In all cases, treating these as vectors ensures that conservation laws and field interactions are correctly modelled. A solid grasp of vector and scalar concepts therefore underpins success in IB Physics, from simple one-dimensional motion to complex fields and forces.

其他例子包括动量 p = mv、冲量 J = FΔt 以及电场 E = F/q。
