1. Magnetic and Non-magnetic Materials | 磁性材料与非磁性材料
Magnetic materials include iron, steel, cobalt and nickel. The mark scheme usually accepts any of these when a question asks for one magnetic material, but it rejects the general answer ‘metal’ because many metals such as copper, aluminium and brass are not magnetic.
磁性材料包括铁、钢、钴和镍。题目要求写出一种磁性材料时,评分标准通常接受其中任意一种,但不接受笼统的“金属”,因为铜、铝、黄铜等很多金属没有磁性。
Non-magnetic materials include wood, plastic, glass, copper, aluminium and rubber. In marking, ‘non-magnetic’ means a magnet does not attract the material, so copper and aluminium are often used as examples of metals that do not stick to a magnet.

Mark scheme tip: if the question asks you to classify a material, do not rely only on its appearance. State whether it is magnetic or non-magnetic and give one example of each group if needed.

2. Magnetic Poles and the Law of Attraction and Repulsion | 磁极与吸引排斥定律
Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. The mark scheme awards marks for using the correct terms ‘north pole’ and ‘south pole’ rather than ‘top’ or ‘bottom’.
每个磁铁都有北极和南极。评分标准要求使用“北极”“南极”这些正确术语,而不是“顶部”或“底部”。
The law of magnetism states that like poles repel and unlike poles attract. You must state both parts for full marks, for example ‘two north poles repel, but a north pole and a south pole attract’.

If a question shows two labelled magnets, the mark scheme expects you to identify whether they attract or repel by looking at the poles facing each other. Do not write ‘they stick’ or ‘they push’ without naming the poles.

3. Permanent Magnets and Induced Magnetism | 永磁体与感应磁性
A permanent magnet keeps its magnetism for a long time. Steel is usually chosen for permanent magnets because it retains magnetism well, while pure iron is a soft magnetic material that loses magnetism quickly.
永磁体能够长期保持磁性。钢常被用来制作永磁体,因为它能很好地保持磁性;而纯铁是软磁材料,磁性很快消失。
Induced magnetism happens when a magnetic material, such as an unmagnetised iron nail, is placed near a permanent magnet. The nail becomes a temporary magnet and can attract other iron filings, but it loses most of this magnetism when the permanent magnet is removed.
感应磁性是指未磁化的铁钉等磁性材料靠近永磁体时,铁钉被磁化成为暂时磁体,能吸引其他铁屑;但当永磁体移开后,铁钉的磁性大部分消失。
The mark scheme often asks for the difference between induced and permanent magnetism. A strong answer says a permanent magnet keeps its magnetism without needing another magnet, while induced magnetism only exists while the material is in the magnetic field of another magnet.
评分标准常考感应磁性与永磁的区别。高分答案会说:永磁体不需要其他磁体就能保持磁性,而感应磁性只在材料处于另一磁体的磁场中时才存在。
4. Magnetic Fields and Field Lines | 磁场与磁感线
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where it can attract magnetic materials or affect a compass needle. The field is strongest at the poles.
磁场是磁铁周围能够吸引磁性材料或影响指南针的区域。磁极处的磁场最强。
Field lines show the direction of the magnetic field. By convention, they point from the north pole to the south pole outside a magnet, and they never cross.
磁感线表示磁场的方向。按照惯例,磁感线在磁铁外部从北极指向南极,并且永不相交。
When you draw field lines, the mark scheme checks three things: arrows must point from N to S, lines must not touch or cross, and the spacing of lines must show field strength — closer lines mean a stronger field.

Compass plotting is a common practical question. You place a small compass near the magnet, mark the needle direction, move the compass to the next point, and repeat. Connecting the marks gives a field line.

5. The Earth’s Magnetic Field and Compasses | 地磁场与指南针
The Earth behaves like a giant bar magnet. A compass needle is a small magnet, and its north pole points roughly towards the geographic north because it is attracted by the Earth’s magnetic south pole, which is located near the geographic north.
地球就像一个巨大的条形磁体。指南针的指针本身是一个小磁体,其北极大致指向地理北方,因为它被位于地理北极附近的地磁南极所吸引。
Mark schemes usually accept ‘the Earth has a magnetic field’ as the key idea. For full marks you should explain that a compass aligns with the Earth’s magnetic field rather than using the word ‘gravitational pull’.

Do not say the compass north pole is attracted to the geographic north because geographic north is not magnetic north. The safer mark-scheme answer is: the compass lines up with the Earth’s magnetic field and points towards Earth’s magnetic south pole near the geographic north
