KS3 CIE Refraction Mark Scheme | KS3 CIE

📚 KS3 CIE Refraction Mark Scheme | KS3 CIE

Understanding how examiners award marks is just as important as knowing the science. This article breaks down the KS3 CIE refraction mark scheme so you can see exactly which keywords, diagram labels and explanations earn full credit.

1. What a Mark Scheme Rewards |

A CIE mark scheme for KS3 refraction usually rewards three things: correct scientific vocabulary, clear diagrams, and logical explanations. If your answer uses the right terms and shows the correct direction of bending, it is likely to earn the marks.

Marks are often available for “state” questions, such as state what happens to speed, and for “explain” questions, such as explain why the ray bends. You do not need to derive equations at this level, but you must use the correct scientific ideas in the right order.

2. Defining Refraction |

A typical definition that scores full marks is: “Refraction is the change in direction of a wave when it passes from one medium into another due to a change in speed.” The key terms are change in direction, medium and change in speed.

If a question asks for a one-mark definition, an answer such as “light bends when it enters glass” can be accepted, but it may not score full marks in an explanation question because it does not mention the cause of the bending.

At KS3 CIE, the word “medium” means the material the light travels through, such as air, water, glass or plastic. Always name the two media involved when you describe refraction.

3. Drawing the Required Diagram |

Diagram questions often ask you to draw a ray of light entering a glass block from air. You must show the incident ray, the normal, the refracted ray inside the glass, and the emergent ray leaving the block.

Full diagram marks require the normal to be drawn as a dashed line perpendicular to the surface, with a labelled right angle. The refracted ray inside the glass must bend towards the normal, and the emergent ray must bend away from the normal.

Arrowheads must point in the direction of travel; missing arrows can lose marks. Use a ruler and a sharp pencil for all straight lines, and make sure the ray does not stop at the surface.

4. Direction of Bending |

Light bends towards the normal when it slows down, which happens when it travels from air into glass or water. Light bends away from the normal when it speeds up, such as travelling from glass into air.

If a ray hits the boundary along the normal, so the angle of incidence is 0°, it does not change direction, but it still changes speed. This is a common mark scheme point.

A common mark scheme statement is: “Air to glass: bends towards normal. Glass to air: bends away from normal. Do not accept ‘bounces’ or ‘reflects’ in refraction questions.”

5. Speed, Wavelength and Frequency |

When light enters a denser medium such as glass, its speed decreases and its wavelength also decreases. The frequency of the light stays the same because frequency depends only on the source.

wave speed = frequency × wavelength

If the speed drops and the frequency is constant, the wavelength must get shorter. This link between speed and wavelength is often rewarded in explanation answers.

In KS3 CIE mark schemes, you may be asked to explain why a change in speed causes bending rather than a change in frequency. Credit is given for linking speed change to wavelength change and for stating that frequency does not change.

6. Explaining Refraction in Words |

A full explanation answer can follow this structure: state the medium change, state the speed change, and state the resulting direction change. For example: “Light travels from air into glass, so it slows down and bends towards the normal.”

If the question says “explain”, do not just write “the ray bends”. This will score at most one mark. You must include the cause, which is the change in speed, and the effect, which is the change in direction.

Some mark schemes reward comparative language: the angle of refraction is smaller than the angle of incidence when entering glass, and larger than the angle of incidence when leaving glass.

7. Common Errors That Lose Marks |

The most common error is writing “reflection” instead of “refraction”. Reflection is bouncing off a surface; refraction is passing through and bending. Mixing these terms will lose the mark.

Other frequent mistakes include drawing the refracted ray bending away from the normal when light enters glass, using a solid line for the normal, and forgetting that the emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray for a rectangular glass block.

Students also lose marks by writing “frequency changes” or “wavelength stays the same”. Remember: frequency is constant, but wavelength changes with speed.
