Metal Elements |

📚 Metal Elements |

Metals are a large and important group of elements on the periodic table. They are all around us, from the aluminium in drink cans to the iron in bridges and the copper in electrical wires. In this KS3 chemistry article, we will explore the main physical and chemical properties of metals, how they react with oxygen and acids, and why the reactivity series helps us predict their behaviour.

1. What Is a Metal Element? |

An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. Metal elements are found mainly on the left-hand side and in the centre of the periodic table, and most of the elements in the periodic table are metals.

Common examples include iron (Fe), copper (Cu), aluminium (Al), gold (Au), silver (Ag), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), potassium (K) and calcium (Ca). At room temperature, almost all metals are solids; mercury (Hg) is the only common metal that is a liquid.

2. Physical Properties of Metals |

Metals have a characteristic shiny appearance when they are polished or freshly cut. This property is called metallic lustre.

They are excellent conductors of heat and electricity. For example, copper is used in electrical wires because it allows electric current to flow
