A quadratic equation in one unknown is an equation that can be written in the form ax² + bx + c = 0, where a, b and c are constants and a ≠ 0. The highest power of the unknown x is 2, which gives the equation its name.

For example, x² + 5x + 6 = 0, 2x² − 3x + 1 = 0 and x² − 9 = 0 are all quadratic equations. If a = 0, the equation becomes linear, so the condition a ≠ 0 is essential.
