📚 A-Level CAIE English Literature: Case Analysis in Action | A-Level CAIE

This article offers a step-by-step case analysis for the CAIE A-Level English Literature examination. It shows how to move from a general question to a high-scoring, thesis-driven essay by using a model set text, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The strategies here are designed to be transferable to any drama, poetry or prose text on the syllabus, but the worked example will ground the process in a concrete question and response.

1. Understanding the Assessment Objectives |

The first step in any CAIE A-Level English Literature case analysis is to understand what the examiner is actually testing. The specification rewards five core assessment objectives: AO1 requires a fluent, well-structured and personal response; AO2 demands close analysis of language, form and structure; AO3 asks you to place texts in relevant contexts; AO4 expects you to make connections across texts; and AO5 encourages engagement with different critical interpretations. In a case study, these objectives are not separate boxes but lenses that should overlap in every paragraph.

AO1 Articulate informed, personal and creative responses to literary texts
AO2 Analyse ways in which meanings are shaped in literary texts
AO3 Demonstrate understanding of the significance and influence of contexts
AO4 Explore connections across literary texts
AO5 Explore literary texts informed by different interpretations

2. Choosing a Case Study Question |

For this worked example, we will use a common set text, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, and a typical question: “Explore how Fitzgerald uses setting, symbolism and narrative voice to present the corruption of the American Dream.” This question is effective because it invites a thesis-driven essay rather than a list of features, and it gives clear analytical angles to develop.

When selecting your own question for practice, look for wording that contains a command word like “explore”, “examine” or “evaluate”, plus a thematic focus and at least one textual element such as “setting”, “structure”, “imagery” or “voice”. Avoid questions that simply ask “what happens” because they invite summary rather than analysis.

3. Unpacking the Question |

Before writing, underline the command word and the key concepts. “Explore” means you must investigate how meaning is created, not merely describe what happens. “Setting”, “symbolism” and “narrative voice” tell you which textual elements to prioritise. “Corruption of the American Dream” defines the interpretative focus: you need to argue that the dream has become a hollow or destructive ideal.
