1. The CAIE 9695 Framework | CAIE 9695
The Cambridge International A Level English Literature qualification is usually taken in two stages: AS Level and A Level. At AS, candidates sit Paper 1 Drama and Poetry and Paper 2 Prose and Unseen. The full A Level adds Paper 3 Shakespeare and Drama and Paper 4 Pre- and Post-1900 Poetry and Prose.
剑桥国际 A Level 英语文学通常分为 AS 和 A Level 两个阶段。
Each paper rewards evidence-based interpretation, not summary. Candidates must write clearly, use direct references, and build an argument that addresses the question. Knowing the papers in advance helps you allocate time and practise the right skills.
| Paper | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Drama and Poetry |
| Paper 2 | Prose and Unseen |
| Paper 3 | Shakespeare and Drama |
| Paper 4 | Pre- and Post-1900 Poetry and Prose | 1900
2. Four Assessment Objectives |
CAIE marks responses using four assessment objectives. AO1 tests detailed knowledge of the text and accurate reference; AO2 tests understanding of meaning and context beyond surface reading; AO3 tests analysis of language, form and structure; AO4 tests clear and effective communication.
The weighting varies by paper, but a balanced answer must show all four. Do not let quotation-heavy description replace interpretation. Every quotation should be followed by close analysis of how the words create meaning.
| AO | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 | Knowledge and textual reference |
| AO2 | Meaning and context |
| AO3 | Language, form and structure |
| AO4 | Clear communication |
3. Genre Essentials: Poetry, Prose, Drama |
Prose, poetry and drama are studied through separate lenses. Poetry foregrounds compression, sound and imagery; prose foregrounds narrative voice and psychological depth; drama foregrounds performance, dialogue and spatial relationships.
In every genre, quote exactly and comment on how a word, image or stage direction creates effect. Avoid generic praise such as ‘powerful’ or ‘effective’ without further explanation. Technical terms only earn marks when they are attached to a particular effect.
- Poetry — 诗歌 — focus on sound, rhythm, line breaks, imagery, persona.
- Prose — 小说 — focus on narrative voice, structure, characterisation, motifs.
- Drama — 戏剧 — focus on stagecraft, subtext, dramatic irony, performance choices.
4. Poetry: Meter, Sound and Imagery |
For poetry, first map the speaker, situation and tone. Then examine form: sonnet, villanelle, free verse, dramatic monologue. Meter and rhyme are deliberate choices that can control pace, emphasis and emotional release.
Close reading should link sound to sense. Alliteration, assonance, sibilance and caesura create pace, tension or intimacy. Imagery often works through simile, metaphor, personification and symbol, and should be tied to the poem’s central concern.
- Enjambment speeds movement or introduces ambiguity —
- Quatrains and couplets can control emotional release —
- Persona is not necessarily the poet —
5. Prose: Narrative Voice and Structure |
When studying prose, identify narrative voice first: first-person, third-person limited, omniscient or free indirect discourse. Voice shapes bias, reliability and reader sympathy. Ask why the author chose that particular point of view.
Structure matters as much as character. Look at openings, endings, time shifts, repetition, motifs and chapter breaks. Characterisation is built through dialogue, action, interiority and contrast, not merely through physical description.
- Free indirect discourse blurs narrator and character —
- Motifs create thematic coherence —
- Unreliable narrators demand active reading —
6. Drama: Stagecraft and Dialogue |
Drama must be read as performance. Stage directions, entrances, exits, props, lighting and sound all carry meaning. Dialogue works through subtext: what characters do not say can matter more than what they say.
