📚 A-Level CAIE History: Essay Writing Framework and Sample Essay | A-Level CAIE

Strong essay writing is the core skill examined across CAIE A-Level History, especially in the essay-based papers. Many students know the facts but lose marks because they describe events instead of building a sustained argument. This article explains a practical framework for planning, structuring and evaluating historical essays, with a worked example on the Treaty of Versailles. Use it to turn historical knowledge into analytical, well-supported judgements that meet the Assessment Objectives for AO1 knowledge and AO2 analysis and evaluation.

1. Understanding the Command Words |

In CAIE A-Level History, the command word determines the type of judgement required. ‘Assess’ and ‘evaluate’ ask you to weigh strengths and limitations before reaching a conclusion. ‘To what extent’ and ‘how far’ require balanced consideration rather than a one-sided answer. ‘Discuss’ invites debate among different factors or interpretations. ‘Explain why’ focuses mainly on causes, while ‘compare and contrast’ asks for similarities and differences. Identifying the command word before planning prevents irrelevant description.

To what extent’和’how far’要求平衡分析,而不是单方面回答。’

For example, if a question says ‘Assess the importance of the Treaty of Versailles’, you must not simply describe its terms. You must compare it with other causes, note its limitations, and reach a judgement about how important it really was. A common examiner complaint is that candidates write everything they know about a topic rather than answering the specific command word.

Assess the importance of the Treaty of Versailles’,你不应只描述条约条款。

2. Deconstructing the Question and Planning |

Before writing, underline the key concepts, time frame, and limiting words. For example, in ‘To what extent was the Treaty of Versailles the main cause of the Second World War in Europe?’, the key concepts are ‘Treaty of Versailles’, ‘main cause’, and ‘Second World War in Europe’. The phrase ‘to what extent’ signals that you must consider other causes. Spend three to five minutes drawing a quick plan: list three or four factors, decide their relative importance, and formulate a thesis. A plan keeps your answer focused and prevents repeating the same point in different paragraphs.

To what extent was the Treaty of Versailles the main cause of the Second World War in Europe?’中,关键概念是’Treaty of Versailles’、’main cause’和’Second World War in Europe’。’

A useful planning technique is to draw a simple table with three columns: factor, evidence, and relative importance. Under ‘factor’, write Versailles, the Great Depression, the failure of collective security, and Hitler’s ideology. Under ‘evidence’, note specific facts such as Article 231, the 1929 Wall Street Crash, the Manchurian Crisis, and Mein Kampf. Under ‘relative importance’, write one sentence explaining whether the factor was a long-term precondition or a short-term trigger. This table becomes the skeleton of your essay.

3. Writing a Strong Introduction |

An introduction should do three things: define key terms, establish context, and state a clear thesis that directly answers the question. Avoid long background narratives such as ‘since the beginning of time, nations have fought wars’. A strong thesis may acknowledge complexity: ‘Versailles was a significant cause, but it became deadly only when combined with economic collapse and the failure of collective security.’ This shows the examiner that you have a line of argument rather than a list of facts.

Your introduction should also indicate the factors you will discuss and the criteria you will use to judge between them. For example, you might say: ‘The main factors considered will be the Treaty of Versailles, the weakness of the League of Nations, the impact of the Great Depression, and Nazi ideology, judged in terms of long-term versus short-term significance.’ This gives the examiner a clear roadmap. Keep the introduction to about one paragraph, or roughly 10% of the essay length.

Each body paragraph should follow a clear structure. Use PEEEL: Point (topic sentence), Evidence (specific dates, names, events), Explanation (how the evidence supports the point), Evaluation (limitations or counter-evidence), and Link (back to the question). For example, a paragraph on Versailles might begin with the point that the treaty created a powerful grievance, cite Article 231 and reparations, explain how this undermined the Weimar Republic, evaluate the counter-evidence of the Locarno era, and link back to the question by saying the treaty was necessary but not sufficient.

使用 PEEEL:Point(主题句)、Evidence(具体日期、人名、事件)、Explanation(证据如何支持论点)、Evaluation(局限性或反证)以及 Link(回扣题目)。

A sample PEEEL paragraph might open with: ‘The Treaty of Versailles created a lasting grievance that destabilised the Weimar Republic.’ It would then cite the loss of territory, the ‘war guilt clause’, and the £6.6 billion reparations bill. The explanation would connect these terms to the rise of nationalist propaganda. The evaluation would note that peaceful revision seemed possible in the late 1920s. The link would say: ‘Therefore, while Versailles supplied the grievance, it cannot alone explain the outbreak of war in 1939.’
