📚 CAIE A-Level Psychology: Interdisciplinary Synthesis Question Training | CAIE A-Level

The CAIE A-Level Psychology course (9990) rewards integration, not isolated recall. In high-mark essay questions, examiners expect candidates to link biological, cognitive, learning and social approaches with research methods, ethics, debates and specialist applications. This guide provides a structured training method for interdisciplinary synthesis questions, using core studies as evidence and showing how to move from description to critical comparison.

CAIE A-Level

1. What Makes a Question Interdisciplinary? |

An interdisciplinary question asks you to connect at least two approaches, or one approach with methodology, ethics, issues and debates, or a specialist option. For example, the question ‘Discuss how biological and cognitive explanations of phobias can be evaluated using research evidence’ is not two mini-essays. It requires explicit comparison of assumptions, methods, strengths and limitations.

Common patterns in CAIE questions include:

  • Approach + approach: Compare biological and social explanations of aggression.
  • Approach + methodology: Evaluate brain scanning as used in cognitive psychology.
  • Approach + ethics: Discuss ethical issues in social influence research.
  • Approach + application: Apply learning theory to a health promotion campaign.

2. Biological × Cognitive Integration |

Biological and cognitive approaches naturally complement each other when explaining emotion and memory. For example, Canli et al. (2000) used fMRI to show that stronger amygdala activation was associated with better recall of emotionally intense scenes. However, this does not explain how a person interprets the arousal. Schachter and Singer (1962) demonstrated that physiological arousal can be labelled differently according to cognitive cues. A top-level answer uses one study to support biological intensity and the other to support cognitive appraisal, then evaluates the interaction.

The following table shows how the two approaches can be
