📚 Cambridge IGCSE Media Studies Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer | 剑桥 IGCSE 媒体研究论文写作框架与范文

Extended-response questions in Cambridge IGCSE Media Studies reward candidates who can analyse a media text rather than simply describe it. This guide sets out a repeatable writing framework: understand the command word, plan two or three focused points, and build each paragraph around evidence and analysis. It also includes a model essay so you can see the framework in action.

1. Understanding the Essay Question |

Start by underlining the command word and the focus. ‘Analyse’ asks you to break down how meaning is made; ‘Discuss’ expects more than one viewpoint; ‘Evaluate’ requires a judgement; ‘To what extent’ invites a balanced conclusion.

For Cambridge IGCSE Media Studies, common essay questions ask you to focus on one or more of the four key concepts: media language, representation, audience and institution. Check which concept is dominant before you start writing.

What it asks
Analyse 分析 Break down techniques and effects
Discuss 讨论 Consider more than one viewpoint
Evaluate 评价 Make a judgement
To what extent 在多大程度上 Give a balanced conclusion

2. The PEAL Paragraph Framework | PEAL

A reliable analytical paragraph can be built with PEAL: Point, Evidence, Analysis and Link. The Point states the argument; the Evidence is a precise example from the text; the Analysis explains the effect using terminology; the Link connects back to the question or to the next idea.

Point + Evidence + Analysis + Link = PEAL

Do not treat PEAL as a rigid four-sentence rule. In a strong essay, the analysis is often two or three sentences, and the evidence can be woven into the sentence rather than quoted mechanically.

  • Point: The low-angle shot presents the detective as dominant.
  • Evidence: In the opening scene, the camera tilts upward from the street to the detective’s face.
  • Analysis: This angle makes the audience look up at the character, reinforcing her authority and power before any dialogue is heard.
  • Link: Therefore, media language constructs the detective’s status immediately.

3. Planning Before You Write |

Spend five to seven minutes planning before you write the essay. Choose two or three media products you know well, or two or three scenes from one product, depending on the question. Each planned paragraph should answer the question directly.

A one-page plan might look like this: Intro – state judgement; Paragraph 1 – camera and lighting; Paragraph 2 – editing and sound; Paragraph 3 – representation or audience; Conclusion – link back to the question. This prevents descriptive wander.
