📚 Common Misconceptions in A-Level CAIE Philosophy and How to Correct Them | A-Level CAIE
Many A-Level Philosophy candidates know the key thinkers but lose marks through recurring conceptual confusions. This revision guide identifies common misconceptions in the CAIE Philosophy syllabus and offers precise corrections that can sharpen both essay argument and evaluation.
1. Treating ‘valid’ and ‘true’ as synonyms |
In deductive logic, a valid argument is one where the conclusion must be true if the premises are true. Validity concerns the form of the argument, not the actual truth of its statements. A common mistake is to call an argument valid because its conclusion happens to be true, or to reject a valid argument because one premise is false.
To correct this, separate validity from truth. Test validity by asking: if I imagine a world where the premises are true, can the conclusion still be false? If yes, the argument is invalid. Then assess soundness only after validity has been established, by checking whether all premises are actually true.
For example, ‘All birds can fly; a penguin is a bird; therefore a penguin can fly’ is valid in form but unsound because the first premise is false. In CAIE essays, stating this distinction precisely earns marks for logical clarity.
2. Assuming philosophy is just a matter of opinion |
A second misconception is that because philosophical questions lack one definitive answer, all opinions are equally acceptable. This confuses open-endedness with arbitrariness. In philosophy, a view is not judged by how strongly the writer feels it, but by the quality of the reasons, evidence and responses to objections.
CAIE examiners reward a defended position over an unsupported assertion. Even if two candidates reach opposite conclusions, the stronger essay is the one that reconstructs arguments accurately, considers counterexamples and offers a reasoned judgement. Therefore, replace ‘this is just my opinion’ with ‘this position is better supported because…’.
3. Rejecting a theory by one counterexample without reconstruction |
Some candidates attack a theory by quoting a single vivid counterexample but do not explain which premise or principle it contradicts. For example, they may say that Kantian ethics forbids lying, yet we should lie to a murderer, so Kantian ethics is false. This is too quick.
A proper counterexample must target a specific premise or entailment of the theory. It should also consider whether the theory can be refined or whether the apparent counterexample relies on intuition that the theory itself questions. In the Kantian case, one must discuss whether the theory permits evasion, refusal, or a distinction between perfect and imperfect duties.
In the exam, show this by writing: ‘The objection targets premise P because… The defender could reply by…’ This turns a slogan into analysis.
4. Confusing utilitarianism with egoism or hedonism |
Utilitarianism is often misrepresented as ‘do whatever gives you pleasure’ or ‘the greatest happiness for me’. This imports egoism or hedonism into a theory that is actually impartial and maximising. Classical utilitarians such as Bentham and Mill claim that the right action is the one that produces the greatest balance of happiness over suffering for all affected.
Hedonism is a theory of value, not a complete moral theory. Egoism says one should maximise one’s own good. Utilitarianism says
