📚 Common Misconceptions in IGCSE CCEA Philosophy and How to Correct Them | IGCSE CCEA

Many IGCSE CCEA Philosophy students lose marks not because they lack interest, but because they carry unexamined assumptions about what philosophy is. They treat philosophy as a collection of opinions, confuse disagreement with relativism, and use key terms loosely. This article identifies the most common misconceptions and shows how to correct them through precise definitions, logical analysis, and exam-ready examples.

1. Treating Philosophy as Mere Opinion |

A very common mistake is to write ‘this is just my opinion’ or ‘everyone has their own truth’. In CCEA Philosophy, a view is only as good as the reasons supporting it. An opinion becomes a philosophical claim when it is backed by premises, examples, and responses to objections.

To correct this, always ask: ‘What reason could convince a reasonable opponent?’ For example, instead of saying ‘abortion is wrong’, say ‘abortion is wrong if the foetus has a right to life, and that right outweighs the mother’s autonomy in most cases’. This shift forces you to expose the reasoning that can be evaluated.

2. Falling into Relativism |

Students often claim that because people disagree about morality or God, all views are equally valid. This is a misunderstanding. Disagreement shows that people hold different beliefs; it does not show that there is no fact of the matter or that all reasons are equally strong.

In CCEA answers, avoid phrases like ‘it is all relative’ unless you are defining relativism as a theory. If you use relativism, explain it as the claim that moral truth depends on a culture or individual, then evaluate it: does relativism allow moral progress? Can it explain why we criticise other cultures? These questions show critical engagement.

3. Confusing Validity with Truth |

Many students call an argument ‘valid’ when they simply agree with it. In philosophy, validity is a technical property of deductive arguments: an argument is valid if the conclusion must be true whenever the premises are true. Validity says nothing about whether the premises are actually true.

A sound argument is a valid argument with all true premises. The correction is to use the two-step test: first, is the logic valid? Second, are the premises acceptable? For example, ‘all design requires a designer; the universe shows design; therefore the universe has a designer’ is valid in form, but the second premise can be challenged. Saying ‘the argument is valid’ is not enough to show God exists.

4. Mixing Up Descriptive and Normative Claims |

A descriptive claim says how things are, such as ‘many societies practice capital punishment’. A normative claim says how things ought to be, such as ‘capital punishment should be abolished’. Students often slide from ‘is’ to ‘ought’ without noticing, which is known as the is-ought gap.

To correct this, label each premise in your answer as descriptive or normative. If you infer an ‘ought’ from an ‘is’, ask what additional moral principle is needed. For example, ‘humans evolved to be selfish’ does not by itself imply ‘selfishness is morally acceptable’. You need a further premise such as ‘whatever is natural is good’, which itself can be challenged.

5. Misusing Key Ethical Terms |

Terms such as ‘absolute’, ‘relative’, ‘subjective’, and ‘objective’ are often used interchangeably, which loses marks. In CCEA Philosophy, ‘moral absolutism’ means some actions are right or wrong regardless of context, while ‘moral relativism’ means rightness depends on culture or individual. ‘Subjective’ means dependent on a mind; ‘objective’ means independent of minds.

Create a small table or glossary as you revise: term, definition, example, and one strength or weakness. For instance, ‘utilitarianism’ is a consequentialist theory that judges actions by their outcomes, specifically the greatest happiness of the greatest number. It is not the same as ‘hedonism’, although it can be hedonistic about value.

6. Misreading the Euthyphro Dilemma |

When studying divine command theory, students often write ‘God commands what is good because he is good’, but fail to see the dilemma. The Euthyphro dilemma asks: is something good because God commands it, or does God command it because it is good? Each option has a cost.

If goodness is whatever God commands, then goodness seems arbitrary: if God commanded cruelty, cruelty would be good. If God commands what is already good, then goodness is independent of God, which limits divine sovereignty. A good answer explains both horns and considers a third option, such as goodness flows from God’s unchanging loving nature, then evaluates whether that escapes the dilemma.

7. Confusing the Logical and Evidential Problems of Evil |

Many students treat the problem of evil as one single argument. In fact, the logical problem says that the existence of an all-powerful, all-loving God is logically incompatible with any evil at all. The evidential problem says that even if evil is logically compatible with God, the amount and distribution of evil make God’s existence unlikely.

The correction is to identify which version you are discussing. For the logical problem, a theist may reply that free will provides a logically possible reason for evil. For the evidential problem, that reply is weaker because it must explain why so much apparently pointless evil exists. Distinguishing these levels shows precision and earns higher marks.

8. Evaluating Ethical Theories by Conclusions Only | 只从结论评价伦理理论

A frequent error is to reject utilitarianism because ‘it would allow killing one to save many’. This is a start, but it misses the internal reasoning. CCEA examiners want you to evaluate a theory’s principles, consistency, and practical implications, not just its unpalatable conclusions.

For utilitarianism, distinguish act and rule versions. Act utilitarianism judges each action by its consequences; rule utilitarianism judges rules that generally promote happiness. The objection about killing one to save many is more damaging to act utilitarianism than to rule utilitarianism. Similarly, when evaluating Kantian ethics, do not merely say ‘lying is always wrong is too strict’; explain why Kant thinks the universalisability test forbids lying and whether this ignores consequences.

9. Ignoring Counterexamples and Thought Experiments |

Philosophy uses thought experiments such as the trolley problem, the ring of Gyges, or the Chinese room to test intuitions and theories. Students sometimes dismiss them as ‘unrealistic’. This misses their purpose: they isolate a variable to reveal a principle’s consequences.

Use thought experiments actively in your answers. If discussing whether consequences matter more than intentions, describe a case where someone accidentally causes harm with good intentions and compare it with a case where someone intends harm but fails. The comparison exposes whether you really hold a consequentialist or a deontological position.

10. Writing Description Instead of Evaluation |

The most common exam mistake is to summarise a theory without evaluating it. A CCEA Philosophy question usually contains a command word such as ‘discuss’, ‘evaluate’, or ‘critically examine’. This requires you to weigh strengths and weaknesses, compare arguments, and reach a justified conclusion.

Use a simple structure: state the claim, explain the reasoning, give one strength, give one or two weaknesses, then respond to the strongest objection. For example, when evaluating the design argument, explain Paley’s watch analogy, note its intuitive appeal, then discuss Hume’s objections that the universe is not sufficiently like a watch and that the argument relies on a weak analogy. End with a judgement: the argument may support a designer but not necessarily the God of classical theism.
