📚 Essay Writing Framework and Model Answer for IGCSE WJEC History | IGCSE WJEC
In IGCSE WJEC History, a strong essay is not a long story. It is a reasoned argument built from precise evidence and focused directly on the question. This guide breaks down a reliable writing framework, then provides a full model answer with paragraph-by-paragraph analysis so you can see exactly how to apply the method under exam conditions.
1. What Makes a WJEC History Essay Different? | WJEC
A WJEC essay question asks you to make and support a historical judgement, not to retell everything you know. Examiners reward relevant selection, explanation, analysis and a clear answer to the exact wording. Writing more pages of narrative will not gain marks unless those details are used to argue a point.
Unlike source-analysis questions, an essay does not provide you with the evidence. You must recall and deploy precise facts from your own revision. This makes planning and structure even more important, because a clear framework helps you select only the evidence that strengthens your argument.
2. Understanding the Command Words |
Before writing, underline the command word in the question. Different command words require different degrees of judgement. ‘Explain why’ asks you to analyse causes or reasons, while ‘How far’, ‘To what extent’ or ‘Assess’ require you to weigh evidence and reach a clear overall judgement.
Explain why” 要求你分析原因或理由,而 “How far”、”To what extent” 或 “Assess” 则要求你权衡证据并得出明确的总体判断。
| Command Word | 指令词 | What You Must Do | 你需要做什么 |
|---|---|
| Explain why | 解释为什么 | Give reasons and show how they led to a result | 给出原因并说明它们如何导致某一结果 |
| How far | 在多大程度上 | Balance both sides and make a judgement | 权衡正反两方面并作出判断 |
| Assess | 评价 | Weigh importance or success against criteria | 依据标准衡量重要性或成功程度 |
| To what extent | 在何种程度上 | Consider how far a statement is true | 考虑某个说法在多大程度上成立 |
3. Planning: The 5-Minute Outline |
Spend the first five minutes making a mini-plan. Write down your overall judgement, three or four paragraph themes and two or three specific pieces of evidence for each theme. This prevents drifting off-topic and stops you from repeating the same point in different words.
- Question: How fair was the Treaty of Versailles? |
- Judgement: more unfair than fair |
- Paragraph 1: some punishment understandable |
- Paragraph 2: violated self-determination |
- Paragraph 3: economic damage and political consequences |
- Conclusion: overall unbalanced treaty |
4. Introduction: Thesis and Criteria |
A strong introduction is two or three sentences long. It directly answers the question, states your judgement and signals the criteria you will use. Do not start with vague background such as ‘Throughout history…’ or ‘After the First World War, leaders met to discuss peace.’ Go straight to your argument.
Example introduction: ‘The Treaty of Versailles was only partially fair. While some punishment of Germany was understandable, the treaty ignored self-determination and imposed economic terms that created lasting instability, so overall it was more unfair than fair.’ This gives a clear judgement and two criteria: national self-determination and economic consequences.
5. PEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEL
Each main paragraph should follow the PEEL model: Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. Start with a point that supports your judgement. Then give specific evidence such as dates, names, statistics or terms. Explain how that evidence proves your point, and end by linking back to the question.
|---|---|
| Point | 观点 | What does this paragraph argue? |
| Evidence | 证据 | Which specific facts support the point? |
| Explanation | 解释 | Why does this evidence matter to the argument? |
| Link | 回链 | How does it answer the question? |
6. Using Evidence: Dates, Names, Statistics |
WJEC examiners look for precise, well-chosen evidence instead of general statements. Avoid phrases like ‘lots of money’, ‘many countries’ or ‘some people’. Use exact references such as Article 231, £6.6 billion reparations, the loss of the Saar coalfields, or the 1923 Ruhr occupation.
- Do: ‘Germany lost 13% of its European territory and about 10% of its population.’ |
- Do not: ‘Germany lost a lot of land.’ |
- Do: ‘The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk imposed far harsher terms on Russia in 1918.’
- Do not: ‘Germany had treated Russia badly.’ |
7. Analytical Language and Link Words |
Use analytical linking words to show the examiner your reasoning. Words such as ‘therefore’, ‘consequently’, ‘however’, ‘this suggests’, ‘more importantly’ and ‘as a result’ connect evidence to argument. Avoid storytelling words like ‘then’, ‘next’ and ‘after that’, which only describe sequence.
Example: ‘The loss of the Saar coalfields weakened Germany’s economy, which in turn made reparations harder to pay and increased public resentment against the Weimar Republic.’ Here the phrase ‘which in turn’ shows a causal chain rather than a simple sequence of events.
8. Reaching a Judgement |
Your conclusion must answer the question directly and give a clear overall judgement. Weigh the factors you have discussed and identify which was most important or decisive. Do not introduce new evidence. A useful pattern is: restate your judgement, summarise the balance of factors, and end with a final evaluative statement.
Example conclusion: ‘Overall, the Treaty of Versailles was more unfair than fair. Although some punishment of Germany was understandable, its one-sided application and economic damage created the very instability it was meant to prevent. It therefore failed as a lasting peace settlement.’ This directly answers ‘How fair’ and explains the judgement.
9. Common Mistakes to Avoid |
Many candidates lose marks by writing chronological narratives instead of arguments. Others state a point but give no evidence, or list evidence without explaining its significance. Some essays lack an overall judgement, or the judgement appears only in the final sentence without being developed in the body paragraphs.
- Mistake: telling the story of events in order |
- Fix: organise paragraphs by analytical point, not by time | 改正:按分析要点组织段落,而非按时间
- Mistake: using vague evidence |
- Fix: include precise dates, names, figures and clauses |
- Mistake: ignoring ‘How far’ and only giving one side |
- Fix: balance both sides before reaching a judgement |
10. Model Essay: ‘How fair was the Treaty of Versailles?’ |
The following model essay applies the framework to a common WJEC-style question. Read each paragraph together with its translation, then study the analysis in Section 11.
The Treaty of Versailles was only partially fair. While some punishment of Germany was understandable, the treaty ignored the principle of self-determination and imposed economic terms that created lasting instability. Overall, it was more unfair than fair.
Some terms of the treaty were defensible. Germany had imposed the harsh Treaty of Brest-Litovsk on Russia in March 1918, taking huge areas of land. France had also been invaded twice by Germany, in 1870 and 1914, and wanted security. Article 231 assigned war guilt to Germany, and the reparations bill of £6.6 billion was intended to compensate the damage. From this viewpoint, holding Germany responsible was not entirely unreasonable.
However, many terms violated the very principles the Allies claimed to support. Wilson’s Fourteen Points had promised self-determination, yet German-speaking populations in Danzig and the Sudetenland were placed under foreign control or excluded from self-rule. Germany was also forced to disarm while other powers did not, and it was excluded from the League of Nations. This made the treaty look like a diktat rather than a negotiated peace.
The economic impact made the treaty actively dangerous. Germany lost the Saar coalfields, 13% of its territory and about 10% of its population. Reparations helped fuel the hyperinflation crisis of 1923, which wiped out savings and increased resentment against the Weimar Republic. Extremists such as Hitler were able to exploit this anger, meaning the treaty contributed to the very instability it was supposed to prevent.
Overall, the Treaty of Versailles was more unfair than fair. Although some punishment was understandable, its one-sided application and economic damage created lasting resentment and instability. It therefore failed as a fair and durable peace settlement.
11. Model Essay Paragraph Analysis |
The introduction states a direct judgement and gives two criteria: self-determination and economic consequences. The first body paragraph uses the PEEL structure: the point is that some terms were defensible; the evidence includes Brest-Litovsk, 1870, 1914 and £6.6 billion; the explanation shows why punishment was not unreasonable; the final sentence links this to fairness.
The second body paragraph uses the counter-argument. The point is that the treaty violated self-determination. The evidence is specific: Wilson’s Fourteen Points, Danzig, the Sudetenland, disarmament and exclusion from the League. The explanation links this evidence to the idea of a diktat, and the whole paragraph answers the question by showing unfairness.
The final body paragraph adds a second reason for the judgement: economic damage and political consequences. It uses exact detail and causal language such as ‘helped fuel’ and ‘meaning the treaty contributed to’ to show analysis. The conclusion then weighs both sides and states a clear final judgement without adding new evidence.
12. Final Checklist |
Before you finish the essay, run through a final checklist. This takes only two or three minutes but can save several marks by catching weak points before the examiner does.
