This guide explains the main exam techniques and marking criteria so you can turn knowledge into marks.

1. Overview of CAIE IGCSE Engineering Assessment | CAIE IGCSE 工程评估概述

CAIE IGCSE Engineering (0680) assesses three main assessment objectives: AO1 knowledge and understanding, AO2 application of knowledge in familiar and unfamiliar contexts, and AO3 analysis, evaluation and problem solving. The written paper usually includes short structured questions and longer questions on design, manufacturing, materials, mechanics, energy and electronics. Practical and project components also assess planning, making, testing and evaluation.

2. Command Words and What They Mean | 指令词及其含义

Every question contains a command word that tells you exactly what the examiner expects. Before you start writing, underline the command word and use it to decide the type and depth of answer required.

Using the wrong command word level is one of the most common reasons for lost marks. For example, if the question says “evaluate”, a simple list of facts will only gain partial credit; you must make a judgement.

3. Reading the Mark Allocation | 阅读分值分配

The marks in brackets, such as (2) or (5), are a direct clue to depth and length. A one-mark question usually needs a single correct fact. A two-mark question may need two separate points or one point plus a reason. A five-mark question often expects a sequence of steps, a labelled sketch or two advantages plus two disadvantages plus a justified conclusion.

Before writing, underline the command word and the number of marks. Then plan that number of distinct points. This prevents both under-answering and wasting time with irrelevant details. Your answer should be as long as the marks require, not as long as you can write on the topic.

4. Calculation Questions: Method Marks and Accuracy | 计算题:方法分与答案精度

For every calculation in IGCSE Engineering, state the formula first. Then substitute the given values, rearrange if needed, and show every step. The final answer must include the correct unit. If you only write the final number, you may lose method marks even if the answer is correct: examiners cannot see how you reached it.

Common formula forms include stress = force ÷ area, density = mass ÷ volume, and efficiency = useful output energy ÷ total input energy. Convert units before substitution: for example, force in newtons, area in m² or mm² consistently, and mass in kg.

Do not round intermediate steps too early; keep at least two extra significant figures until the final answer.
