1. The Skeletal System |

The skeleton has five main functions: support, protection, movement, blood cell production and mineral storage. Bones give the body shape, protect organs such as the brain and heart, provide levers for movement, produce red and white blood cells in bone marrow, and store calcium and phosphorus.

Synovial joints such as the hinge joint at the knee and the ball-and-socket joint at the shoulder allow different types of movement: flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation and circumduction. A hinge joint allows flexion and extension only, while a ball-and-socket joint allows movement in almost all directions.

Ligaments connect bone to bone and stabilise joints, while tendons connect muscle to bone and transmit the force produced by muscle contraction. Cartilage covers the ends of bones and reduces friction inside a joint.

2. The Muscular System |

Voluntary muscles work in antagonistic pairs. For example, the biceps flexes the elbow while the triceps extends it; one muscle contracts as the agonist while the other relaxes as the antagonist. This arrangement allows controlled movement at a joint.

The main muscle fibre types are slow-twitch (Type I) and fast-twitch (Type II). Slow-twitch fibres suit endurance activities because they resist fatigue and use oxygen efficiently. Fast-twitch fibres generate rapid, powerful contractions but fatigue more quickly.

Isotonic contractions involve movement and a change in muscle length; they can be concentric when the muscle shortens or eccentric when it lengthens under load. Isometric contractions develop tension without visible movement, such as holding a plank position.

3. The Circulatory System |

The heart pumps blood through the pulmonary circuit to the lungs and the systemic circuit to the body. The right side of the heart deals with deoxygenated blood; the left side pumps oxygenated blood to working muscles and organs.

Heart rate is the number of beats per minute. Stroke volume is the volume of blood ejected per beat. Cardiac output is the total volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute and is calculated using the equation below.

Cardiac Output = Heart Rate × Stroke Volume |

Blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Red blood cells carry oxygen via haemoglobin; white blood cells defend against infection; platelets help blood clot; plasma transports nutrients, hormones and waste products.

4. The Respiratory System |

Air enters through the nose or mouth, passes the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, and reaches the alveoli where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.

Tidal volume is the air breathed in or out per breath at rest. Vital capacity is the maximum air exhaled after a maximum inhalation. Minute ventilation is the volume of air moved into or out of the lungs per minute and is calculated using the equation below.

Minute Ventilation = Tidal Volume × Breathing Rate |

During exercise, breathing rate and depth increase to supply more oxygen to working muscles and remove carbon dioxide. The intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract more forcefully to expand the chest cavity.

5. Energy Systems and Recovery |

ATP is the immediate energy source for muscle contraction. The body resynthesises ATP through three systems: the ATP-PC system, the lactic acid system and the aerobic system. The energy system used depends on the intensity and duration of exercise.

The ATP-PC system provides energy for very short, high-intensity efforts lasting up to about 10 seconds without oxygen and without producing lactic acid. It is used in events such as sprinting, jumping and throwing.

The lactic acid system supplies energy for high-intensity efforts lasting around 60 to 90 seconds but produces lactic acid, which causes muscle fatigue. The aerobic system uses oxygen and supports prolonged lower-intensity exercise such as distance running.

Recovery includes replenishing ATP-PC stores, removing lactic acid through increased oxygen intake, and restoring glycogen. The extra oxygen consumed after exercise is known as oxygen debt or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC).

6. Health and Components of Fitness |

Health-related fitness components are cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. Skill-related fitness components are agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed.

Ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen during sustained exercise | 心肺在持续运动中供氧的能力
Maximum force a muscle can exert | 肌肉能产生的最大力量
Flexibility | 柔韧性 Range of movement at a joint | 关节活动范围
Agility | 敏捷性 Ability to change direction quickly and accurately | 快速准确改变方向的能力

Fitness tests include the multi-stage fitness test for cardiovascular endurance, the hand grip dynamometer for strength and the sit-and-reach test for flexibility. Test results should be compared against normative data and used to design training programmes.

7. Principles of Training and Methods |

The principles of training can be remembered as SPORT: Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility and Tedium. Training must match the demands of the sport, gradually increase in load, and include variety to prevent boredom.

Overload is achieved through the FITT principle: Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. For example, increasing the number of sessions per week applies overload, as does increasing the intensity or duration of each session.

Training methods include continuous training for aerobic endurance, interval training for speed and anaerobic fitness, circuit training for general fitness, weight training for strength, and plyometric training for power. Each method should be selected according to the fitness component being developed.

A warm-up raises body temperature, increases blood flow and prepares joints and muscles for activity. A cool-down helps remove waste products and returns heart rate gradually to resting levels, reducing the risk of dizziness and muscle soreness.

8. Skill Classification and Information Processing |

Skills can be classified on continua: open–closed, gross–fine, self-paced–externally paced, discrete–serial–continuous, and high–low organisation. Classification helps coaches choose appropriate practice conditions and feedback.

An open skill is affected by a changing environment, such as a pass in football; a closed skill follows a stable environment, such as a free throw in basketball. A gross skill uses large muscle groups, while a fine skill uses smaller, more precise movements.

Information processing has four stages: input, decision-making, output and feedback. The performer receives stimuli through the senses, selects a response, executes the movement and uses feedback to improve future performance.

9. Feedback and Motivation |

Feedback can be intrinsic, from within the performer such as how a movement feels, or extrinsic, from an external source such as a coach or video analysis. It can also be knowledge of performance or knowledge of results.

Positive feedback encourages repetition, while negative feedback highlights errors. Beginners benefit from clear, positive external feedback; elite performers can use detailed intrinsic feedback and knowledge of performance.

Motivation is intrinsic when driven by personal satisfaction and extrinsic when driven by rewards such as trophies or praise. Goal setting using SMART targets (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) improves motivation and performance.

10. Nutrition and Hydration |

Macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Carbohydrates are the main fuel for exercise; fats provide long-term energy; proteins support growth and repair of muscle tissue. A balanced intake is essential for performance and recovery.

Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals, which are needed in small amounts. Water regulates body temperature and prevents dehydration. Dehydration of only 2 percent can reduce aerobic performance and concentration.
