📚 IGCSE CAIE Psychology: Exam Technique and Mark Scheme | IGCSE CAIE

To score well in CAIE IGCSE Psychology, you need more than memorised content. You must understand exactly what the examiner is looking for and how different question types are marked. This guide breaks down the paper structure, command words, extended-response technique, and the most common mark-scheme traps so you can turn your knowledge into full marks.

1. Know the Paper Structure |

Before attempting any question, you need a clear mental map of the CAIE IGCSE Psychology papers. The written paper usually includes short-answer questions, stimulus-based questions, and extended-response questions. Many items also require you to refer directly to one of the core studies.

  • Paper 1: multiple-choice format, testing knowledge of core studies, methods, and ethics.
  • Paper 2: written format, using short-answer and extended-response questions based on core studies and research methods.
Component | 组成部分 What it tests | 考察内容 Question style | 题型

Always check your current specification for the exact number of marks and timings, but the core principle does not change: written answers must be selective, precise, and rooted in psychological evidence.

2. Assessment Objectives and Command Words |

CAIE Psychology mark schemes reward three assessment objectives: AO1 knowledge and understanding, AO2 application, and AO3 analysis and evaluation. A question that asks you to “evaluate” cannot be answered by a description alone, no matter how detailed it is.

Common command words and what they mean:

Command word | 指令词 What to do | 你要做什么
Give a brief answer, no development needed.
Describe | 描述 Say what happened, what it is, or what was found.
Explain | 解释 Give reasons, causes, processes, or functions.
Evaluate | 评价 Give strengths and weaknesses, support and challenge.
Use psychological knowledge to explain a new scenario.

Underline the command word in every question before you write, and plan your response around it. If you see “evaluate”, write at least one strength and one weakness explicitly.

3. Short-Answer Questions: Precision and Context |

Short-answer questions usually carry one or two marks, and the mark scheme expects one clear point per mark. Adding extra information is not penalised in most cases, but it wastes time and can create confusion if the extra content is inaccurate.

For example, if a question asks “State one ethical issue in Bandura et al.”, a one-mark answer could simply be “the children could not give fully informed consent”. You do not need to explain why; the mark scheme awards the point for identifying the issue accurately.

例如,如果题目问 “State one ethical issue in Bandura et al.”,一分答案可以是 “children could not give fully informed consent”。

If the question asks for a response “using the scenario”, always link your answer to the scenario. A generic statement such as “the sample was small” earns little unless you explain why this matters in the context of the question.

4. Extended Response and PEEL | 拓展题与 PEEL 结构

Six-mark and longer questions require developed arguments. A useful structure is PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, and Link. Start with a clear point, support it with evidence from a named study, explain what the evidence means, and link back to the question.

一个实用的结构是 PEEL:Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(回扣题目)。

For an evaluation question, a safe six-mark structure is: one developed strength with evidence from a study; one developed weakness with a methodological issue or alternative interpretation; and, if the question allows, a brief conclusion.

Avoid writing everything you know about a study. The examiner is not rewarding memory alone, but the way you select and use information to answer the exact question demanded.

5. Research Methods Questions |

Research methods questions test your understanding of experimental design, variables, sampling, reliability, validity, and data analysis. You must be able to identify an independent variable, a dependent variable, and at least one extraneous variable in a described study.

The factor the researcher changes or manipulates.
Dependent variable (DV) | 因变量 The factor the researcher measures.
Any other factor that could affect the DV if not controlled.
Reliability | 信度 Consistency of results or measurement over repeated tests.
Validity | 效度 The extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure.

When a question asks “Suggest a null hypothesis”, write a clear statement that predicts no difference or no relationship between the variables. Use the exact variables from the scenario rather than vague wording.

If you are asked to improve a study, do not simply say “use a bigger sample”. Specify how the bigger sample would be recruited or how this would improve reliability or generalisability.

6. Ethical Issues and How to Use Them | 伦理问题及其运用

Ethical issues appear frequently in IGCSE Psychology, often as one-mark identification questions or as part of a longer evaluation. The main ethical guidelines are informed consent, right to withdraw, deception, confidentiality, protection from harm, and privacy.

When a question asks you to “explain one ethical issue” in a named study, you must describe the issue and why it is a problem. For example, in a study using deception, participants were not told the true aim, so their consent was not fully informed.

Use ethical issues as evaluation points when a question asks you to evaluate a study. A study may be useful because it produced detailed data, but it may be ethically flawed because the participants could not give fully informed consent or were exposed to psychological stress.

7. Core Studies: Describing and Applying |

The CAIE IGCSE Psychology syllabus includes named core studies that you must be able to describe and evaluate. For each study, build a compact revision card with five elements: aim, sample, method, results, and conclusion.

CAIE IGCSE

What was the study trying to investigate?
Sample | 样本 Who were the participants and how were they selected?
Method | 方法 What procedure, design, and controls were used?
Results | 结果 What were the main quantitative or qualitative findings?
Conclusion | 结论 What did the researchers conclude from the results?

When answering a question that says “Use the study by X to support your answer”, you must name the researcher and use specific details from that study. A generic research example will not meet the mark-scheme requirement.

当题目说 “Use the study by X to support your answer” 时,你必须写出研究者姓名,并使用该研究的具体细节。

Practice writing each core study description in four or five sentences. Your description should be accurate enough that another psychology student could recognise the study without seeing the title.

8. Data Response and Graph Interpretation |

Data-response questions ask you to read a graph, table, or passage and then identify trends, compare conditions, or draw conclusions. Always read the axes, units, and title first, because many students lose marks by misreading what the data actually show.

When describing a graph, use comparative language: “As the delay increased, the number of words recalled decreased from 12 to 6.” Avoid simply listing numbers without a pattern.

If a question asks “What conclusion can be drawn?”, your answer must go beyond the data and state what the data suggest about memory, behaviour, or another psychological claim. Use the word “suggests” rather than “proves”.

When asked to calculate a percentage or difference, show the calculation clearly using the numbers given. Use simple arithmetic steps and label your answer with the correct unit.

9. Common Mistakes and Mark-Scheme Traps |

One of the biggest mistakes is ignoring the command word. Students often write a detailed description when the question asks them to evaluate, or they explain a theory when the question only asks for one identified feature. This means the answer cannot access the higher mark bands.

Another trap is failing to use the named study. If the question says “using the study by Dement and Kleitman”, you must explicitly refer to that study. Other evidence, however accurate, will not be rewarded because it does not answer the specific demand.

如果题目说 “using the study by Dement and Kleitman”,你必须明确提到该研究。

Writing too much for a one-mark question is not directly penalised, but it steals time from later questions. Conversely, writing too little for a six-mark question means you have not demonstrated enough developed points, so the mark scheme caps your score.

Be careful with ethical evaluation. Saying “the study was unethical” is not enough. Name the specific guideline that was broken and explain the consequence for the participants or for the quality of the data.

只说 “the study was unethical” 是不够的。

10. Time Management and Revision Strategy |

Use marks as a time guide. A rough rule is one minute per mark, so a six-mark question deserves around six minutes. Leave time at the end to check that every answer actually addresses the command word in the question.

Effective revision is active, not passive. Instead of re-reading notes, practise past-paper questions under timed conditions, then compare your answers with the mark scheme line by line.

When you use the mark scheme, do not just read the model answer. Ask yourself why each point earns a mark, how the examiner expects it to be phrased, and what you would need to change in your own response to gain full credit.

Finally, maintain a mistake log. Every time you lose a mark on a practice paper, record the reason: misread command word, omitted named study, weak evaluation, data misread, or time pressure. Review this log before the real exam so you do not repeat the same avoidable errors.
