📚 IGCSE CAIE Psychology: Experimental and Practical Assessment Essentials | IGCSE CAIE
In CAIE IGCSE Psychology (0471), practical and experimental skills are assessed through written questions rather than a laboratory practical paper. You are expected to apply research methods to novel scenarios, evaluate studies, and interpret data. Success depends on precision with terminology, procedural controls, and ethical reasoning.
1. Know Where Practical Skills Are Assessed |
The IGCSE Psychology syllabus does not include a separate practical workbook or lab examination. Instead, research methods and experimental design appear mainly in Paper 2, where short-answer and essay questions may present a study, ask you to identify variables, suggest controls, or evaluate the procedure.
Treat every research scenario as a mini-experiment. Read the stem carefully, highlight the aim, sample, procedure, and results before answering. Marks are awarded for using psychological terminology accurately.
2. Writing Aims and Hypotheses |
An aim states the purpose of the study in broad terms, such as ‘to investigate whether music affects memory’. A hypothesis must be a precise, testable prediction stating the expected effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable.
For the CAIE exam, you should be able to write an experimental hypothesis and a null hypothesis. A one-tailed hypothesis predicts a direction (e.g. ‘music improves recall’), while a two-tailed hypothesis does not (e.g. ‘music affects recall’).
Always include the IV and DV in the hypothesis, and operationalise them. For example: ‘Participants who listen to instrumental music during encoding will recall more words from a 20-word list than participants who encode in silence.’
3. Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables |
The independent variable (IV) is the factor manipulated by the researcher or compared between conditions. The dependent variable (DV) is the outcome measured. In an experiment on music and memory, the IV is presence or absence of music; the DV is number of words correctly recalled.
Operationalisation means defining variables so they can be manipulated or measured objectively. Avoid vague phrases such as ‘memory’ or ‘happiness’; instead say ‘number of words recalled from a 20-item list’ or ‘score on the Positive Affect Scale from 1 to 10’. This makes a study replicable.
4. Controlling Extraneous and Confounding Variables |
Extraneous variables are any factors other than the IV that could affect the DV, such as noise, time of day, or participant mood. A confounding variable is an extraneous variable that varies systematically with the IV, making it impossible to separate their effects.
Standardised instructions, controlled room conditions, and use of identical materials reduce extraneous variables. Random allocation to conditions helps prevent participant differences from becoming confounds.
In repeated measures designs, order effects can act as confounds. Counterbalancing (half participants do condition A then B, half do B then A) controls this.
5. Experimental Designs: Independent Groups, Repeated Measures, Matched Pairs |
In an independent groups design, different participants take part in each condition. This avoids order effects but can suffer from participant variables because individuals differ between groups.
In a repeated measures
