📚 IGCSE CAIE Sociology: Unit Test Mock Paper Walkthrough | IGCSE CAIE

This article provides a full walkthrough of a mock unit test for the CAIE IGCSE Sociology syllabus. It explains what examiners expect, how to interpret command words, and how to build model answers for short-answer, data-response and essay-style questions.

1. Paper Overview |

The mock paper is designed around the 0495 syllabus and contains three sections: Section A tests key concepts and definitions, Section B presents a short data-response item, and Section C asks for a developed essay-style response. The total is 60 marks and the suggested time is 60 minutes.

In Section A, answers usually require precise sociological language rather than everyday description. In Section B, you must refer to the item or data explicitly. In Section C, you need to show knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation.

2. Question 1: Key Concepts |

Question: Define ‘norms’ and give one example. (2 marks)

Model answer: Norms are shared rules or expectations that guide behaviour in a particular social group or society. For example, waiting in a queue is a norm in many modern industrial societies.

Examiner note: One mark is awarded for defining norms as shared rules or expectations, and one mark for a relevant example. Do not confuse norms with values, which are more general beliefs about what is desirable.

3. Question 2: Theoretical Perspectives |

Question: Describe two differences between functionalist and Marxist views of the education system. (4 marks)

Model answer: Functionalists argue that education performs positive functions, such as socialising young people into shared values and preparing them for work. Marxists argue that education mainly serves the ruling class by reproducing class inequality and legitimising capitalist ideas.

Second difference: Functionalists see meritocratic selection as fair because rewards go to those with ability and effort. Marxists see meritocracy as a myth, because working-class pupils are disadvantaged by material and cultural factors.

4. Question 3: Research Methods |

Question: Identify one advantage of using participant observation in sociological research. (2 marks)

Model answer: Participant observation can produce high validity because the researcher observes behaviour in its natural setting and may gain deeper, first-hand understanding of meanings and motives.

Examiner note: You must link the method to a clear research advantage. Saying only ‘it gives detailed data’ may be too vague; specify why that improves validity or insight.

5. Question 4: Culture and Socialisation |

Question: Explain how the family acts as an agency of socialisation. (4 marks)

Model answer: The family is a primary agency of socialisation because it is usually the first influence on a child. Through imitation, rewards and punishments, children learn language, norms, values and basic skills such as eating with cutlery or saying ‘please’.

It also teaches gender roles. For example, parents may encourage different toys or activities for boys and girls, although this can vary between families and cultures.

6. Question 5: Social Stratification |

Question: Describe two ways social class can affect life chances. (4 marks)

Model answer: First, social class affects health: higher-class groups tend to have longer life expectancy and lower rates of chronic illness because of better income, housing and access to healthcare.

Second, social class affects educational attainment: middle-class children on average achieve higher qualifications, partly because their families can afford resources such as private tutoring and books.

7. Question 6: Family |

Question: Describe one change in family structure in modern industrial societies and explain one reason for this change. (6 marks)

Model answer: One change is the decline in the traditional nuclear family as the only dominant form. There are now more single-parent families, reconstituted families and cohabiting couples.

One reason is changing social attitudes: divorce and cohabitation are less stigmatised, and women have greater economic independence, so they are less likely to stay in unhappy marriages.

8. Question 7: Education |

Question: Explain what sociologists mean by the hidden curriculum. (4 marks)

Model answer: The hidden curriculum refers to the informal lessons taught in school alongside the formal curriculum. It includes values such as obedience, punctuality, competition and respect for authority, transmitted through school rules, timetables and teacher expectations.
