Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) rewards not only correct answers but also the mathematical methods you use. To improve your grade, you need to understand exactly where marks are given and how to present your working so that examiners can award every possible mark.

1. Understanding the Exam Structure | 了解试卷结构

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) has two compulsory written papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2 each last 2 hours and carry 80 raw marks. The two papers are equally weighted, each contributing 50% to the final grade. Questions may cover functions, quadratics, equations, indices and surds, polynomials, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight-line graphs, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series, vectors, differentiation and integration.

2. How Marks Are Awarded | 评分方式

Each mark scheme usually shows three main types of marks: M marks for method, A marks for accuracy, and B marks for independent statements or answers. Some questions also allow follow-through (ft) marks when a candidate uses an incorrect earlier answer with a correct method. Marks are awarded positively, which means examiners look for evidence of correct mathematics rather than deducting marks for every small slip.

每一份评分标准通常显示三种主要分数类型:M 分为方法分,A 分为准确性分,B 分为独立陈述或答案分。有些题目还允许后续分 (ft),即当考生使用前面错误的答案但方法正确时仍可获得后续分。评分采用正向给分,即考官寻找正确数学过程的证据,而不是对每一个小错误都扣分。


3. Method Marks Are the Key to Partial Credit | 方法分是获得部分分数的关键

A method mark is awarded for a correct mathematical process, even if the final answer is wrong. For example, when solving x² – 5x + 6 = 0, factorising to (x – 2)(x – 3) can earn an M mark, and then solving to x = 2, x = 3 can earn A marks. If you factorise incorrectly but your two factors lead to two values, you may still receive the method mark but lose the accuracy mark. Always write the key algebraic step: factorisation, substitution, derivative, integral, logarithm law, or trigonometric identity.

x² – 5x + 6 = 0 ⇒ (x – 2)(x – 3) = 0 ⇒ x = 2, x = 3

4. Accuracy Marks and Follow-Through | 准确分与后续分

Accuracy marks are awarded only for correct final answers or correct intermediate values that are explicitly required. If your answer is wrong because of an earlier arithmetic slip, follow-through marks may allow you to gain later accuracy marks if the method is correct and the error is carried forward consistently. However, follow-through is only available where the mark scheme allows it, and the question must remain mathematically valid. Do not rely on it; aim for accuracy at each line.

准确分只针对正确的最终答案或题目明确要求的正确中间值给出。如果你的答案因为前面某个算术错误而错误,当方法正确且错误被一致地带入后续步骤时,后续分可能让你获得后面的准确分。但是,只有在评分标准允许后续分,并且题目在数学上仍然成立的情况下,后续分才有效。不要依赖后续分,每一行都要力求准确。


5. Common Command Words | 常见指令词

The wording of a question tells you what form of answer is expected. ‘Find’, ‘solve’ and ‘evaluate’ require a final value or expression. ‘Show that’ or ‘prove’ requires a complete logical argument with no unjustified leaps. ‘Sketch’ requires the general shape, intercepts, turning points or asymptotes where relevant, not a perfect scale plot. ‘Hence’ means use the previous result; if you ignore this, you may lose method marks. ‘Exact value’ means leave your answer in surds, π, e or log form, not a rounded decimal.

In Additional Mathematics, the final answer is only part of the credit. For a typical 6-mark question, only 1 or 2 marks may be for the final answer; the rest come from method and intermediate accuracy. Write one step per line, keep terms aligned, and label any substitution, equation, derivative, or rearrangement. If you need to discard a solution, state why, for example ‘x = -3 is rejected because x > 0’. This evidence allows the examiner to award method and follow-through marks.

7. Avoid Premature Rounding | 避免提前舍入

Unless the question asks for a given degree of accuracy, carry exact values or store full calculator precision in memory. Premature rounding can make a final answer inaccurate and cost accuracy marks. For example, if an intermediate angle is 23.5782° and the final answer is required to 3 significant figures, use the unrounded value in later steps. In exact-value questions, simplify surds fully; do not replace √2 or π with a decimal unless instructed.

Both papers are long, so allocate about 1.5 minutes per mark. Start with questions you find most straightforward to build confidence and secure marks early. However, do not leave a question blank: a wrong method with some relevant working may earn one or two method marks. Read the whole question before writing, because the parts are often linked. If part (a) is difficult, you can still state its result when answering part (b) if it has been given; if not, show your method clearly to gain as many available marks as possible.

The syllabus allows a scientific calculator with standard functions. A calculator can check arithmetic, evaluate definite integrals numerically, solve equations approximately, or produce values for sketching. However, written working is still essential. If a question asks for the solution of 2 sin x = √3 for 0° < x < 360°, do not merely write the two calculator answers. Show the reference angle and the quadrant logic: sin x = √3/2 ⇒ x = 60° and x = 180° - 60° = 120°. That shows the method needed for method marks.

2 sin x = √3 ⇒ sin x = √3/2 ⇒ x = 60°, x = 120° for 0° < x < 360°

10. Graphs, Geometry and Notation | 图形、几何与书写规范

In coordinate geometry and calculus, label axes, intercepts, turning points and asymptotes when sketching. Use interval notation or inequality notation correctly for sets and domains. In vectors, write column vectors or i/j form consistently; do not mix forms in the same working. In trigonometry, state the general solution or specific solutions in the required interval. In calculus, use d/dx notation and integral notation clearly, and remember the constant of integration for indefinite integrals.

Past-paper mark schemes are one of the most effective revision tools. They show exactly where marks are awarded and the level of working expected. After completing a past paper, do not just compare final answers. Go through each question with the mark scheme and label every M, A or B mark you earned or missed. If you missed a method mark, identify which step was missing and write a model solution. This trains you to produce the concise but sufficient working that examiners reward.

12. Final Exam-Day Checklist | 考前清单与考试技巧

Before the exam, check that your calculator is approved and set to the correct angle mode where appropriate. In the exam, read the instructions, write in black or blue ink, and draw graphs in pencil if required. Start each question on a new page if it helps, but label sub-parts clearly. At the end, if time remains, check numerical answers in the calculator, test exact values by substitution, and verify that answers satisfy any stated domain or condition. If a ‘show that’ proof does not reach the given result, look for an algebraic slip rather than inventing a false step.

考试前,检查你的计算器是否被允许使用,并在需要时设置正确的角度模式。考试中,阅读答题说明,使用黑色或蓝色墨水笔书写,如要求则用铅笔画图。如果有助于保持清晰,可以每道题从新的一面开始作答,但要清楚地标出各小问。考试结束前如有剩余时间,用计算器检查数值答案,用代入法检验精确值,并验证答案是否满足题目给出的定义域或条件。如果 ‘show that’ 证明题没有推出给定的结果,应寻找代数计算错误,而不是编造一个虚假步骤。
