📚 IGCSE Cambridge Drama: International Competition Preparation Guide | IGCSE Cambridge

Cambridge IGCSE Drama asks you to think, perform and reflect like a theatre maker. For international candidates, the challenge is not only mastering English terminology but also building the discipline to perform under pressure and analyse live work.

1. Understand the syllabus and assessment structure |

Before you begin training, download the correct Cambridge IGCSE Drama syllabus for your exam year. Most specifications split assessment into a written paper and practical coursework, although exact weightings can change. The written paper often tests your ability to interpret a stimulus, analyse a performance text, and evaluate your own devised work. The practical component usually requires you to produce both devised and scripted performances, supported by a portfolio or logbook.

Make a one-page assessment map. List every component, its timing, mark allocation and the key command words such as describe, explain, analyse and evaluate. This map becomes your training syllabus, so you never waste energy on irrelevant material.

2. Master the assessment objectives |

Cambridge Drama marks are usually attached to assessment objectives: AO1 recall and understanding, AO2 analysis and evaluation, and AO3 practical performance skills. In written work, AO2 often carries the most weight, so do not just describe what happened on stage; explain how a choice created meaning.

For practical work, AO3 means your performance must show clear intention, control of voice and movement, and a strong relationship with other performers. Build evidence for every objective in your rehearsal log by writing what you tried, what changed, and why.

3. Build a daily performance training routine |

Treat drama like a sport: short, frequent practice beats long, irregular rehearsals. Spend 20 to 30 minutes a day on voice, body and imagination exercises. Warm up your facial muscles, tongue and breath support, then move through levels, tempo and spatial awareness drills.

Record a 60-second monologue each week and watch it back. Mark one strength and one target. This habit builds the self-awareness examiners look for in live performance and in the written reflective sections.

4. Analysing texts and characters |

Always read performance texts with a pencil in hand. Find the given circumstances: who, where, when, what happened before, and what the character wants in each scene. Then identify the obstacles and tactics the character uses to get what they want.

For each character, complete a role-on-the-wall: draw a simple outline and write internal thoughts on one side and external facts on the other. This helps you move from plot description to psychological motivation, which is exactly what high-band answers require.

Devising means creating theatre from a stimulus rather than starting from a script. Begin with a clear question or tension, not a message. Good devised work grows from exploring an image, a piece of music, a news story or a place through improvisation.

Use techniques such as freeze frames, thought tracking, cross-cutting and physical theatre to develop the piece. After each workshop, write one sentence that summarises what the audience should feel or question at that moment.

6. Rehearsal strategies for ensemble and solo work | 排练策略:集体与个人

In group work, rotate leadership roles so every member can direct, timekeep and give feedback. Before each rehearsal, set one objective such as ‘today we will block the opening 30 seconds with clear spatial relationships.’

For solo work, rehearse in the actual performance space or a similar size room. Mark the stage directions and use tape to map exits, entrances and furniture. Always run the piece twice: once for safety and once for risk, trying a bolder choice.

7. Written exam technique |

In the written paper, always read the command word first. ‘Describe’ asks for details, ‘explain’ asks for reasons, and ‘evaluate’ asks you to weigh strengths and weaknesses. Spend the first five minutes planning and the last five minutes checking your answer.

Use precise theatre vocabulary: blocking, proxemics, levels, gesture, facial expression, pitch, pace, pause, and subtext. Support every point with a specific moment from the performance, for example ‘when the actor turned upstage on the line, it isolated the character and reinforced her guilt.’

8. Stage presence, voice and movement |

Stage presence is not about being loud; it is about being fully present and responsive. Work on eye contact, stillness and reacting truthfully to what other performers do. A small truthful reaction can be more powerful than a large gesture.

For voice, train your breath support by lying on the floor with a book on your stomach and breathing so the book rises. For movement, use Laban efforts such as weight, time, space and flow to change the quality of a gesture.

9. Keeping a reflective journal and portfolio |

Your written portfolio should not be a diary of what happened. It should be a working document that shows problems, experiments, decisions and evaluations. Use the WHAT – SO WHAT – NOW WHAT model: describe the moment, analyse its impact, and state your next action.

WHAT–SO WHAT–NOW WHAT

Include photographs, diagrams of blocking, annotated scripts and short video stills where allowed. Examiners reward evidence of refinement, so show an early idea, the feedback you received, and the final improved version.

10. Mock assessments and feedback loops |

At least once a month, run a full mock written paper under timed conditions. After marking it yourself against the mark scheme, rewrite the weakest paragraph using examiner-style comments. This turns feedback into a new product rather than a passive note.

For practical work, film a full run and watch it without sound first, then with sound only. The silent pass reveals blocking and movement problems; the sound-only pass reveals vocal variation and clarity.

11. Time management and mental preparation |

Work backwards from your exam date and block out three phases: exploration, consolidation and performance. In exploration, generate lots of ideas. In consolidation, cut, polish and memorise. In performance, rehearse in full costume and under pressure.
