2. Principles of Design |

Balance is the arrangement of visual weight so that a composition feels stable; it can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Contrast places strong differences next to each other, such as light against dark, large against small, or rough against smooth.

Emphasis draws the viewer’s attention to a focal point using colour, scale, isolation or placement.

Proportion is the relationship in size between parts of an artwork; rhythm is created by repeating elements at regular or varied intervals.

Unity makes all parts of a work feel connected; variety prevents monotony through differences in line, colour, texture or shape.

3. Colour Theory |

Hue is the pure name of a colour, such as red, blue or yellow; primary colours cannot be mixed from other colours.

Secondary colours are made by mixing two primary colours, for example orange, green and violet.

Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green; they create strong contrast when placed together.

Analogous colours are neighbours on the colour wheel, such as blue, blue-green and green; they tend to create harmony and calm.

Saturation is the intensity or purity of a colour; value is its lightness or darkness, often changed by adding white or black.

4. Drawing and Mark-making |

Hatching uses parallel lines to build tone; cross-hatching layers lines at different angles to darken an area.

Stippling builds tone through small dots; the closer the dots, the darker the value appears.

Contour drawing follows the edges of a subject with a continuous or careful line; gesture drawing captures movement and energy quickly.

Negative drawing focuses on the spaces around and between objects rather than the object itself, helping artists see relationships accurately.

5. Painting Techniques |

Impasto is thickly applied paint that creates visible texture on the canvas or board.

A glaze is a thin, transparent layer of paint that modifies the colour beneath without hiding it completely.

Wet-on-wet means applying fresh paint onto still-wet paint so colours blend softly; dry brush uses very little paint for a broken, rough effect.

An underpainting is an initial layer that establishes tone and composition before final colour is added; a wash is a broad, thin layer of diluted paint.

6. Printmaking and Mixed Media |

Relief printing cuts away non-printing areas so the raised surface carries the ink, as in lino cutting or woodblock printing.

Intaglio printing holds ink in incised lines below the plate surface, as in etching or drypoint; the plate is wiped clean so ink remains only in the grooves.

A monoprint is a one-off print made by drawing or painting onto a plate and transferring it once, often with unique marks.

Collage combines cut or torn papers and other flat materials into one composition; frottage is a rubbing made from a textured surface using crayon or pencil.

7. Sculpture and 3D Terms |

An armature is an internal support, often made of wire, that holds a sculpture’s shape while it is being built.

A maquette is a small-scale model or sketch made to test an idea before producing the final three-dimensional work.

Carving is a subtractive process that removes material from a block, such as wood or stone; modelling is additive, building form by adding soft material such as clay.

Assemblage joins found or pre-made objects into a three-dimensional composition; negative space in sculpture is the open space around and through the form.

8. Annotation and Analysis |

Develop and refine mean moving an idea forward through trials, improvements, feedback and repeated experiments.

10. Memory Tricks and Glossary Builder |

Build a visual glossary by writing each term next to a small drawn example; the image acts as a memory anchor for revision.

Use mnemonics such as ‘Lovely Cats Sit Softly’ for Line, Colour, Shape and Space when checking formal elements in your work.

Group terms into word families, for example ‘hatch, cross-hatch, stipple, blend’ all belong to mark-making, which makes recall faster.

Write a short practice sentence using each term in context at least once a week; this turns passive recognition into active use under timed conditions.
