📚 IGCSE CCEA Music: Glossary and Terms Quick Revision Guide | IGCSE CCEA
In CCEA IGCSE Music, a large part of the listening and appraising paper depends on your ability to recognise and use musical vocabulary accurately. This guide groups essential terms into quick-revision categories so you can learn them logically rather than as a random list. Each section gives the English explanation first, followed by a paired Chinese explanation.
1. Dynamics |
Dynamic markings tell performers how quietly or loudly to play. They are traditionally written in Italian. The two core letters are p for piano (soft) and f for forte (loud). The letter m stands for mezzo, meaning “moderately”, so mp is mezzo-piano (moderately soft) and mf is mezzo-forte (moderately loud).
两个核心字母是 p 代表 piano(弱)和 f 代表 forte(强)。
Extra letters show greater extremes: pp is pianissimo (very soft) and ff is fortissimo (very loud). Gradual changes are shown by crescendo (cresc., gradually getting louder) and diminuendo or decrescendo (dim., gradually getting softer). A sforzando (sfz) is a sudden strong accent on one note.
渐强用 crescendo(缩写 cresc.)表示,渐弱用 diminuendo 或 decrescendo(缩写 dim.)表示。sforzando(sfz)表示某一个音突然加强。
Revision tip: group dynamics by family – soft side (pp, p, mp), loud side (mf, f, ff), and changing side (crescendo, diminuendo, sforzando). In the CCEA listening paper, you may be asked to choose the dynamic heard or to compare dynamics between two sections.
2. Tempo |
Tempo marks indicate the speed of the music. Slow terms include largo (very slow and broad), grave (very slow and solemn) and adagio (slow). Medium terms include andante (at a walking pace) and moderato (moderate). Fast terms include allegro (fast and cheerful), vivace (lively) and presto (very fast).
