This guide targets the most frequently examined themes in IGCSE CCEA Philosophy, from argument analysis and logical fallacies to ethical theories, epistemology, and philosophy of religion. It also highlights the typical errors that cost marks in high-stakes questions, so you can revise with precision and confidence.

1. Argument Structure: Premises and Conclusion |

In CCEA Philosophy papers, you are often asked to identify the premise and conclusion of a short passage. The conclusion is the claim the author wants you to accept; the premises are the reasons offered to support it. A reliable way to locate the conclusion is to ask: ‘What is the author trying to persuade me of?’

Premise indicator words include ‘because’, ‘since’, ‘for’, ‘given that’, and ‘as shown by’. Conclusion indicator words include ‘therefore’, ‘thus’, ‘so’, ‘hence’, ‘consequently’, and ‘it follows that’. However, not every argument uses indicator words, so you must also think about the logical flow of the passage.

A common mistake is treating an example, a definition, or a background sentence as the conclusion. For instance, in the sentence ‘Since all humans are mortal, Socrates is mortal’, the conclusion is ‘Socrates is mortal’, not ‘all humans are mortal’. The word ‘since’ marks the premise.

2. Deductive and Inductive Reasoning |

Deductive arguments aim for certainty: if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. Inductive arguments aim for probability: the premises make the conclusion likely but do not guarantee it. CCEA exam questions often ask you to classify an argument as deductive or inductive and justify your answer.

For example, ‘All humans are mortal; Socrates is human; therefore Socrates is mortal’ is deductive because the conclusion cannot be false if the premises are true. In contrast, ‘The sun has risen every day so far; therefore it will rise tomorrow’ is inductive because the conclusion is probable but not logically guaranteed.

A frequent error is calling a strong inductive argument ‘valid’. Validity is a technical term reserved for deductive arguments; inductive arguments should be assessed as strong or weak, cogent or uncogent. Using the wrong terminology suggests a misunderstanding of the core distinction.

3. Validity and Soundness |

Validity concerns logical form: an argument is valid if it is impossible for the premises to be true and the conclusion false. Validity says nothing about whether the premises are actually true. A valid argument can have false premises and a false conclusion.

Soundness requires two conditions: the argument must be valid, and all its premises must be true. Therefore, a sound argument always has a true conclusion. A valid argument with a false premise is unsound even if the conclusion happens to be true.

Exam tip: never write ‘the argument is true’. Arguments are valid/invalid, sound/unsound; statements or propositions are true/false. Many candidates lose marks by confusing truth with validity, for example by saying ‘this valid argument is true because the conclusion is true’.

4. Common Logical Fallacies |

CCEA questions often present a flawed argument and ask you to name and explain the fallacy. The most tested are ad hominem, straw man, false dilemma, and slippery slope. You must be able to identify the fallacy from a concrete example.

Ad hominem attacks the person making the argument instead of addressing the argument itself. Straw man misrepresents an opponent’s view to make it easier to attack. False dilemma claims only two options exist when more are available. Slippery slope assumes one step will inevitably lead to an extreme chain of events.

A common mistake is only naming the fallacy without explaining how the example commits it. For instance, writing ‘this is a straw man’ earns little credit unless you state which specific view has been distorted and how the speaker then attacks the distorted version.

5. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism and Kantian Deontology |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory: the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill are the key thinkers. Bentham proposed a hedonic calculus; Mill distinguished higher and lower pleasures.

Kantian deontology is non-consequentialist: the right action is done from duty, not for its results. Kant’s categorical imperative commands that we act only according to maxims that could become universal laws, and never treat persons merely as means to an end.

Examiners often see students confuse ‘greatest happiness’ with ‘whatever makes me happy’. Utilitarianism is about aggregate welfare, not individual preference. In application questions, state the theory, apply the principle to the dilemma, and then consider a weakness such as the demandingness objection or the problem of justice.

6. Epistemology: Knowledge vs Belief |

The classical definition of knowledge is justified true belief (JTB). For a belief to count as knowledge, it must be true, you must believe it, and you must have justification. Each condition is necessary, and together they were traditionally taken as sufficient.

A classic exam question asks students to explain Gettier cases, where someone has a justified true belief but still lacks knowledge because the truth is reached by luck. For example, a stopped clock happens to show 3:00, and you look at it at exactly 3:00; your justified true belief that it is 3:00 is true by luck, not knowledge.

Common mistake: treating ‘belief’ as the same as ‘knowledge’. Belief is a necessary condition but not sufficient on its own; truth and justification are also required. Another error is ignoring the role of justification by saying any true belief is knowledge.

7. Philosophy of Religion: Arguments for God’s Existence |

The cosmological argument (e.g. Aquinas’ First Cause) argues that the universe must have a first cause or necessary being because an infinite regress of causes is impossible. If everything were caused by something else, there would be no ultimate explanation.

The teleological or design argument (e.g. Paley’s watchmaker) infers an intelligent designer from the apparent order, purpose, and complexity in nature. Just as a watch implies a watchmaker, the universe implies a divine designer.

The ontological argument (Anselm) claims that God, defined as the greatest conceivable being, must exist in reality because existing in reality is greater than existing only in the mind. This argument is a priori and deductive.

Students often lose marks by describing only the argument and forgetting the standard criticisms, such as Hume’s objection that the universe may be ordered by chance or that the designer may not be the God of classical theism.

8. Personal Identity |

Personal identity asks what makes you the same person over time. The main theories are the soul theory, memory theory (Locke), and the bodily continuity theory. Each has strengths and weaknesses that you should be able to evaluate.

Locke argues that personal identity consists in continuity of consciousness and memory; you are the same person as a past self if you can remember that self’s experiences. This leads to problems such as forgotten memories and the possibility of memory transfer.

A common exam error is confusing numerical identity (being one and the same thing) with qualitative identity (sharing the same characteristics). Personal identity is about numerical identity over time, not about having the same personality traits.

Use thought experiments like Theseus’ ship or the prince and the cobbler to evaluate theories. These cases test whether identity is preserved through gradual replacement or through memory transfer.

9. Free Will and Determinism |

Determinism claims every event, including human action, is caused by prior events and natural laws. Libertarianism in philosophy (not politics) claims that free will is incompatible with determinism and that we do have free will.

Compatibilism (soft determinism)
