📚 IGCSE CCEA Psychology: Learning Resources and How to Use Them | IGCSE CCEA

This guide helps you choose the most effective learning resources for CCEA GCSE/IGCSE Psychology and use them in a way that actually improves exam performance. Instead of collecting hundreds of files and videos, you will learn how to build a small, focused toolkit that covers the specification, supports active recall and develops exam technique.

1. Start with the Specification: Your Exam Roadmap |

Before opening any resource, go to the CCEA Psychology subject page and download three documents: the specification, sample assessment materials and the student guide. The specification lists every topic under Unit 1 and Unit 2, including key terms, research methods and ethical issues. Print the content list and use it as a tick sheet. As you revise, mark each point red, amber or green. This prevents the common mistake of spending too long on one topic such as memory while ignoring research methods. Also note the assessment objectives: AO1 knowledge, AO2 application and AO3 analysis and evaluation. Many candidates lose marks because they can define a concept but cannot apply it to a scenario.

2. Core Textbooks and Revision Guides |

Your main printed resource should be the CCEA-endorsed textbook or student guide provided by your school. In Northern Ireland, publishers such as Colourpoint Educational produce subject-specific GCSE materials, so check for the latest CCEA Psychology edition. If you need a second source, use a mainstream GCSE Psychology textbook, but be selective: compare its contents page with the CCEA specification and only study overlapping chapters. Avoid reading whole A Level books, because extra depth can confuse exam answers. For revision, a condensed guide with bullet points, key studies and command word hints is often more useful than a heavy textbook in the final month.

3. Past Papers, Mark Schemes and Examiner Reports |

Use the official CCEA question papers and mark schemes rather than unauthorised papers from other exam boards. Start with one paper opened alongside your notes, and write model answers that match the mark scheme wording. Then complete a second paper in timed conditions without notes. Mark it using the mark scheme, but pay special attention to the examiner report: it tells you exactly where candidates lose marks, such as failing to include a conclusion or using vague evaluation. Keep a log of mark-scheme phrases that appear repeatedly, such as ‘participants are aware they take part’ for ethics or ‘increases internal validity’ for controls.

记录评分方案中反复出现的表述,比如伦理部分的 ‘participants are aware they take part’ 或控制变量部分的 ‘increases internal validity’。

4. Online Platforms and Video Channels |

BBC Bitesize has a dedicated CCEA GCSE Psychology section that follows the specification topics and includes short tests. Use it as a first-stop for explanations when a textbook feels too dense. YouTube channels such as Psych Boost and CrashCourse Psychology are excellent for visual learners; they cover memory, attachment, social influence and research methods in an accessible way. However, videos are passive unless you do something with them. Pause after each segment and write three questions, then answer them the next day. Tutor2u and Simply Psychology provide useful study notes, but always check that the terminology matches CCEA, because some resources are written for AQA or Edexcel specifications.

5. Flashcards and Spaced Repetition |

Digital flashcards are ideal for key terms, researcher names, ethical principles and evaluation points. Build them topic by topic, not all at once. Each card should have a clear question on one side and a short, accurate answer on the other. For example, a card asking ‘What is a lab experiment?’ should include control of variables, random allocation and one strength and one limitation. Anki spaces reviews according to your memory performance, while Quizlet is quick for matching games and self-tests. Use the 10-minute daily habit: while waiting or between lessons, test one small deck. Re-reading notes can create an illusion of knowledge; self-testing exposes the gaps and shows exactly what you need to revisit.

例如,一张问 ‘What is a lab experiment?’

6. Research Methods and Ethical Issues |

CCEA questions regularly ask you to identify the independent variable, dependent variable, experimental design, sampling method and one ethical issue in a study. Create a glossary table with definitions and one example for each term. Then practise with unfamiliar scenarios: find a short news article about a study, or invent a simple research question such as ‘Does music affect concentration?’ and apply the terms. This application is valuable because the exam rarely asks for bare definitions. Also learn the differences between laboratory, field, natural and quasi experiments, and be ready to explain why a researcher might choose one design over another.

Term English meaning
Independent variable The factor the researcher changes or manipulates.
Dependent variable The factor the researcher measures.
Random allocation Assigning participants to conditions by chance to reduce bias.
Informed consent Participants agree to take part after knowing the aims and procedures.

Learning these terms as part of a working vocabulary rather than isolated definitions will make your research methods answers more precise and confident.

7. Key Studies: Summarise, Apply and Evaluate |

Compile a bank of key studies from the specification, including memory models, conformity, obedience, helping behaviour, learning and cognitive development. For each study, use the same template: aim, method, participants, results, conclusion, and two evaluation points. One common error is writing a long description but no evaluation. Practise writing a full answer in 8 to 10 minutes and then check whether you have included at least one ‘why it matters’ or ‘what could be better’ point. Try to link each study to a debate or issue, such as ethics, validity, reliability or cultural bias, because this will strengthen your evaluation and show the examiner you understand the wider picture.

8. Active Recall and Application Practice |

Passive re-reading is not an efficient study method. Instead, turn every subheading in your notes into a question, such as ‘What are the three stages of the multi-store model?’ or ‘Explain one ethical weakness of Milgram’s study.’ Answer aloud or in writing, then check against your notes. Use the ‘brain dump’ technique: after a 20-minute study block, write everything you remember on a blank sheet, then fill in the missing points in another colour. This works very well for CCEA because the exam rewards precise terminology and accurate links between topics. Application questions require you to use psychological ideas in an unfamiliar situation, so practise writing short paragraphs that explain, apply and evaluate in one go.
